At the beginning of the war u-boats terrorized the seas but by the end of the war, the mighty u-boat crews knew if they went out, chances are they wouldn't return.

  Yes, there were submarines not only in WWII but WWI.

  There were submarines in the US civil war.
  
  On February 17, 1864, Hunley attacked and sank the 1240-short ton (1124 metric tons) screw sloop USS Housatonic on Union blockade duty in Charleston's outer harbor.

  And, there was even a submarine in our Revolutionary War. Called the Turtle. A one man affair that only floated beneath the surface more or less. Used hand cranked screws to change position. The Confederate Hunley of the Civil War also used hand cranked power. Not much change there.
  
  There were some other subs from the Civil War, also belonging to the South. They were actually called semi-submersibles because they only rode just beneath the surface and part of the boat stayed above the surface. Curiously , all were called Davids.

Interesting article, TL. Must be eerie to find something that recent with human remains in it. Achaeologists do it all the time but the remains are so ancient. These were people that might still be here if not for the war. Anyway - interesting read.
