NSA collects millions of e-mail address books globally - The Washington Post

What can each of us do to protect our privacy?

Do not give the cheap answer that if you are not doing anything bad then you have nothing to hide. That kind of answer does not cut it. Privacy is one of the foundation stones of freedom and we must post ways to protect our privacy.

Thanks.

I use bit.ly with a lot of my links only to see what people like. Bit.ly does have the advantage of passing the post title with the link.

Seems obvious to me that the email address collection is a precursor to government spam. Perhaps that's how they plan on reducing the national debt.

ROFL -- holy cyrap that is funny! Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha haha.

Bad marketing strategy. People have been posing as the FBI, NSA and others in scams so now anyone sees anything addressed from these agencies and they just delete it or filter it out. They better have something more special in the works than advertising sales.

I agree though - get whatever privacy you can and fight for the rest. If what I'm doing that they don't like isn't blatant or violent enough that it causes attention outside of my own home, it's really none of their f***ing business what I'm doing. I don't think anyone ever took the tinfoil issue seriously but as long as they have drones - we maybe in need of drone confusing techniques, ya think?

(No, I did not write this....)

      IMMEDIATE ATTENTION NEEDED
      : HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL

      FROM: GEORGE WALKER BUSH
      DEAR SIR / MADAM,

I AM GEORGE WALKER BUSH, SON OF THE FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF
AMERICA GEORGE HERBERT WALKER BUSH, AND CURRENTLY SERVING AS PRESIDENT OF
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. THIS LETTER MIGHT SURPRISE YOU BECAUSE WE HAVE
NOT MET NEITHER IN PERSON NOR BY CORRESPONDENCE. I CAME TO KNOW OF YOU IN MY
SEARCH FOR A RELIABLE AND REPUTABLE PERSON TO HANDLE A VERY CONFIDENTIAL
BUSINESS TRANSACTION, WHICH INVOLVES THE TRANSFER OF A HUGE SUM OF MONEY TO
      AN ACCOUNT REQUIRING MAXIMUM CONFIDENCE.

I AM WRITING YOU IN ABSOLUTE CONFIDENCE PRIMARILY TO SEEK YOUR ASSISTANCE IN
ACQUIRING OIL FUNDS THAT ARE PRESENTLY TRAPPED IN THE REPUBLIC OF IRAQ. MY
PARTNERS AND I SOLICIT YOUR ASSISTANCE IN COMPLETING A TRANSACTION BEGUN BY
MY FATHER, WHO HAS LONG BEEN ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN THE EXTRACTION OF PETROLEUM
IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND BRAVELY SERVED HIS COUNTRY AS DIRECTOR
OF THE UNITED STATES CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY.

IN THE DECADE OF THE NINETEEN-EIGHTIES, MY FATHER, THEN VICE-PRESIDENT OF
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, SOUGHT TO WORK WITH THE GOOD OFFICES OF THE
PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF IRAQ TO REGAIN LOST OIL REVENUE SOURCES IN THE
NEIGHBORING ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF IRAN. THIS UNSUCCESSFUL VENTURE WAS SOON
FOLLOWED BY A FALLING OUT WITH HIS IRAQI PARTNER, WHO SOUGHT TO ACQUIRE
ADDITIONAL OIL REVENUE SOURCES IN THE NEIGHBORING EMIRATE OF KUWAIT, A
      WHOLLY-OWNED U.S.-BRITISH SUBSIDIARY.

MY FATHER RE-SECURED THE PETROLEUM ASSETS OF KUWAIT IN 1991 AT A COST OF
SIXTY-ONE BILLION U.S. DOLLARS ($61,000,000,000). OUT OF THAT COST,
THIRTY-SIX BILLION DOLLARS ($36,000,000,000) WERE SUPPLIED BY HIS PARTNERS
IN THE KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA AND OTHER PERSIAN GULF MONARCHIES, AND
SIXTEEN BILLION DOLLARS ($16,000,000,000) BY GERMAN AND JAPANESE PARTNERS.
BUT MY FATHER'S FORMER IRAQI BUSINESS PARTNER REMAINED IN CONTROL OF THE
REPUBLIC OF IRAQ AND ITS PETROLEUM RESERVES.

MY FAMILY IS CALLING FOR YOUR URGENT ASSISTANCE IN FUNDING THE REMOVAL OF
THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF IRAQ AND ACQUIRING THE PETROLEUM ASSETS OF
HIS COUNTRY, AS COMPENSATION FOR THE COSTS OF REMOVING HIM FROM POWER.
UNFORTUNATELY, OUR PARTNERS FROM 1991 ARE NOT WILLING TO SHOULDER THE BURDEN
OF THIS NEW VENTURE, WHICH IN ITS UPCOMING PHASE MAY COST THE SUM OF 100
      BILLION TO 200 BILLION DOLLARS ($100,000,000,000 - $200,000,000,000), BOTH
IN THE INITIAL ACQUISITION AND IN LONG-TERM MANAGEMENT.

WITHOUT THE FUNDS FROM OUR 1991 PARTNERS, WE WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO ACQUIRE
THE OIL REVENUE TRAPPED WITHIN IRAQ. THAT IS WHY MY FAMILY AND OUR
COLLEAGUES ARE URGENTLY SEEKING YOUR GRACIOUS ASSISTANCE. OUR DISTINGUISHED
COLLEAGUES IN THIS BUSINESS TRANSACTION INCLUDE THE SITTING VICE-PRESIDENT
OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, RICHARD CHENEY, WHO IS AN ORIGINAL PARTNER
IN THE IRAQ VENTURE AND FORMER HEAD OF THE HALLIBURTON OIL COMPANY, AND
CONDOLEEZA RICE, WHOSE PROFESSIONAL DEDICATION TO THE VENTURE WAS
DEMONSTRATED IN THE NAMING OF A CHEVRON OIL TANKER AFTER HER.

I WOULD BESEECH YOU TO TRANSFER A SUM EQUALING TEN TO TWENTY-FIVE PERCENT
(10-25 %) OF YOUR YEARLY INCOME TO OUR ACCOUNT TO AID IN THIS IMPORTANT
VENTURE. THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WILL
FUNCTION AS OUR TRUSTED INTERMEDIARY. I PROPOSE THAT YOU MAKE THIS TRANSFER
BEFORE THE FIFTEENTH (15TH) OF THE MONTH OF APRIL.

I KNOW THAT A TRANSACTION OF THIS MAGNITUDE WOULD MAKE ANYONE APPREHENSIVE
AND WORRIED. BUT I AM ASSURING YOU THAT ALL WILL BE WELL AT THE END OF THE
DAY. A BOLD STEP TAKEN SHALL NOT BE REGRETTED, I ASSURE YOU. PLEASE DO BE
INFORMED THAT THIS BUSINESS TRANSACTION IS 100% LEGAL. IF YOU DO NOT WISH TO
CO-OPERATE IN THIS TRANSACTION, PLEASE CONTACT OUR INTERMEDIARY
REPRESENTATIVES TO FURTHER DISCUSS THE MATTER.

I PRAY THAT YOU UNDERSTAND OUR PLIGHT. MY FAMILY AND OUR COLLEAGUES WILL BE
FOREVER GRATEFUL. PLEASE REPLY IN STRICT CONFIDENCE TO THE CONTACT NUMBERS
      BELOW.

      SINCERELY WITH WARM REGARDS,

Actually, tying emails to people is *******VERY******* useful!

SUPPOSE, just SUPPOSE, that the government shuts down say a ponzi scheme company.

    1. COOKIES can be good to track some things. ALAS, if they are all they have, FORGET IT!
    2. Tracking money can be good. What if you have some weird drop setup?
    3. Traffic logs can be used, but are SO expensive.

And HEY, they can slow things down!

But HEY, if there is a double optin email, they COULD have you trapped ****IF**** they know it is YOUR email!

SO, you see, knowing the email CAN be useful for them in making your life miserable.

In Africa there are swarms of ants that can eat anything in their paths, much like schools of piranhas are able to strip whole cows down to the bone in a matter of minutes.

This attitude burns me up. We have a RIGHT to not be watched. I don't LIKE to be watched and it doesn't matter WHAT I'm doing. Taking a bath or using the toilet is not wrong.......how excited to you get knowing that you can and might be watched doing so. Allowing government to intrude where they have no business being also gives them more leeway to take a lot of other powers that it's really not a good idea for them to have.

I've been watching the NSA problem - it's one I knew was going to come sooner or later after the research I did inside the US West AT strategic marketing library. I was freaked back then at what they were doing - and it was light compared to now.

Now - a 4 or 5 billion dollar data center that collects every bit of your info, including the little things people seem to fail to realize the danger of gov having. From this, they then take it and build a profile of your life.........and the completeness of this profile would probably be enough to start making the "oh, I'm not doing anything wrong" crowd's blood run cold. These profiles are being built not on just people who are possible threats -- EVERYONE is getting one.

Now class - who can tell me why this is so very dangerous?
Start with what happens when the rule of law breaks down.........which it is in the process of doing right now.
What happens if we dip into a period of genocide as around 10 (at least) countries have experienced in the last century? Don't smirk - you are NOT special - go read the bills and executive orders signed in the last 3 years and it will wipe that smirk right off your face.

What happens when you did something that was okay once, but is illegal now - and they use it against you in court (revert to go read bills in the house now, and those signed in the last......one year for this one). What happens when you meet someone and communicate back and forth without really knowing the person well and they turn out to be a "terrorist" and you are implicated because you did business with them?

These questions are not motivated by conspiracy theory -- they are generated straight from history and what is going on in our legislation and Judiciary right NOW. So keep up.

Anyone who thinks that invasion of privacy is no real big deal just because they aren't doing anything wrong has the same mindset that the "useful idiots" have when tyrannical governments are able to take over their country. Our forefathers put restraints on gov for one reason - - YOUR safety. If you don't understand the principles, you need a little bit of study and a little more awareness of what is being done in legislation right now.

Quite. The "if you're not doing wrong, you have nothing to fear" argument is lazy and/or short-sighted, in my opinion. It's surprising to see so many obviously intelligent people employing it.

Once you accept its principle, there's little you can say against, for example, the proliferation of CCTV cameras on all streets. Or even within homes. And how would you argue against every new-born baby being injected with a microchip linked to a central database? Hey, if you plan on doing nothing wrong in your life, what's the big deal?

If you think such examples are far-fetched, this tired old argument has actually been used to justify CCTV camera usage in the UK, as well as in support of various proposed compulsory identity card schemes.

Those who would refer us, in defense, to the incompetence and/or benevolence of the existing PTB, must be young, or have short memories. Once in place, these systems are there to be used for whatever purpose suits the authorities, and none of us can guarantee the agenda of any future power. We should all be careful what liberties, however seemingly trivial, we allow to slip away.

There are American citizens employed by the NSA, and other branches of the government, that are committing treason everyday against other American citizens.

These government employees have been doing this for so long and so often that they think it is alright to do so.

Yeah I read it - but started reading through the answers and that line slipped my mind. I have heard that so many times that I just leaped at it claws out when I saw it.......but will admit that I was a little surprised by WHO said it. Should have figured you were being funny.........but I lose my sense of humor fast when it comes to this subject. Real fast. This whole pile of authoritarian bullshyte were being handed is nothing but a fascist coup. People don't know fascism when it hits them in the face. They keep chanting that there's no concentration camps. Concentration camps are something that ONE fascist did to the hilt. You can have complete fascism and control without them.

This surveillance - database crap they have going now will end freedom forever. Think you're being good but they don't feel you're needed around? Easy peasy to get a mini drone on you and just level your ass and make it look like a virus.

I know that sounds paranoid. But that's what is going on. It's gone on all over the globe before - but people here relaxed because we're "special". Right. Check laws, bills, executive orders, technology (US gov patents), and history of the rise of fascism in other countries. It's not science fiction anymore. If you can't see it, you don't understand how fascism is installed historically or what it is. It's not always concentration camps.......although the US has used them before and the people knew and just allowed it to happen. Think about that. Americans KNEW the Japanese citizens were being camped and did not one thing to stop it. This is one more time that actual concentration camps won't be used unless there is a civil war. However - Stalin used mass starvation instead of camps and I can see that one coming down the pikes already. We have HUGE percentages of our population on gov assistance for food now. Seniors on SS right now - thousands starving. WA state had a drive to save over a thousand starving seniors themselves a few years back. Watch the food crisis real close. It will shock and disturb you if you dig down far enough.

Things are not looking good and the lack of privacy is nothing but a fascist ploy used to keep "undesirables" out of their damned way. Forget about concentration camps being the only way fascists act for cripes sakes. Buy whatever drugs the doctor tells you to take, and eat that processed food with all the toxic chemicals and GMOs in it and laugh about the idea of fascism in the US just because we aren't sporting full blown concentration camps. We already have a for-profit prison system where people exist for 20 years for...smoking pot of all damned things.

Think about it. Really. Just shut up about people being paranoid and THINK about it. WHY would surveillance at the level they are taking it to necessary in a free society? Why is building a complete profile on YOU, who has nothing to hide, so damned important to them? Does that even START to sound logical? Maybe "free world" is just something that was repeated often enough that people are ready to believe it without thinking about it. Right. Get a grip everyone.

Don't know what part of the world you are from, but in the good ol' USA here...

      That ain't so.

Try running that one by a friend of mine who is Indian (Native American). He grew up on a reservation. He can tell you what that was like. The Indian people in his great grandfather's time, the ones who survived the mass killing, forced marches and starvation conducted by the government, were forced at gunpoint onto tracts of land called reservations.

I know for a fact that neither he nor his family trust the government. I wonder why?

Maybe you could sell it to a couple of my buddies, who happen to be black. They were around in the 50's and the 60's. They experienced firsthand what an overbearing, jack-booted, out- of-control government can do to your "rights" and "freedom" while "enforcing the law".

They have stories that would break your heart. And, I guarantee, they haven't forgotten And yes, it really did happen, right here in the good ol' US of A, where you got nothing to worry about... .

I learned some things from my friends. I'm also a student of history. You know what they
say: "Those who will not learn from history, are doomed to repeat it."
