I was staring outside into the darkness watching rain forming puddles and muddy holes, seeing dirty little rivers pouring into gutters beneath the sidewalks, and I was thinking what a miserable night.

In the reflection on the window I saw my son, 3, wander into the living room. I said, "You're awake?" Holding a glass of water, he replied, "Thirsty." He then looked out the window and said, "Beautiful..." I looked at him questioningly and he then said, "It's a rainbow night. See, Daddy, see? Rainbows around the street-lights." I looked outside again and, sure enough, did see rainbow-like halos formed by light reflecting on raindrops falling in front of them.

That first view out the window on a morning after it has snowed, too - everything coated white and sparkling as the sun hits the branches of trees.........

But I wouldn't wanna go outside in it
