Do You Like Weird Music?

It is fun to come across different interpretations of sound and music. Composer Harry Partch was a fascinating example of this. He developed a form of music called "Just Intonation" that he wanted to approximate the range of human speech, using a scale with many more notes than the octave the Western world is familiar with. He came up with many ideas while living as a hobo during the Great Depression.

Harry Partch constructed original instruments to accommodate his musical system. His compositions combined his unique music with dramatic performances. While interesting and still having a following, it could never gain massive popularity because it was, basically, an unworkable system of music that sounded weird to most human ears. You can play the instruments he invented here, online:

Speaking of mountain music, when I was in the Navy one of my shipmates invited me and a couple other guys to his parents house in West Virginia. They lived deep in the mountains. From appearances, they didn't have much. A tiny run-down house, one old junker pick-up, and modest furnishings.

But when we were invited to see the music room, wow! This one family had like 15-20 guitars, maybe a half-dozen or so banjoes, and a few other instruments. Nice instruments too.

I was pretty surprised by all the instruments, given what I'd seen up to that point. They played pretty good too, from what little I heard.

I have always loved experimental and industrial music, some electronic, as well as Far Eastern and Middle Eastern and Celtic music - (+ of course rock, punkrock, and progressive jazz)

In the case of experimental/industrial music, it is amazing how well cacophony and discord can sound. Kind of matches my temperament I think.
