Children Giving To Adults Instead Of Adults Giving To Children During Holiday Season

Instead of children growing up with a gimmie (give me) attitude because of the presents they expect from the adults in their life, what about parents training children to give to their elders from the time they are small? Parents could help their children buy presents for their aunts and uncles and the local homeless shelter and thus train them to give from the time they are small. Then when they get old they would keep up the giving attitude and also get gifts from their own nieces and nephews?

That's an interesting concept. I personally don't want to burden my wee son with adult agendas. I do encourage him to share toys with other children vs hogging them, and was cool with him giving a looney (Canadian dollar coin) to skilled and clearly dedicated street musicians after enjoying their show. But, do I think he would feel obligated to lift others up? No. I don't want him to end up like Elizabeth Smart as a result of good intentions.

Someone still has to pay for all these said gifts. I remember buying my parents, grandparents etc, gifts as a child. But it didn't come out of my own pocket mostly. Maybe we should teach children to give of their time, offer to help around the house, assist the elderly etc? And not just during the holiday season.

    Merry Xmas.

My children.......and now my grandchildren too......have always made gifts for family members. We come up with a cool idea each year and then spend time gathering the materials and creating the masterpieces. They are true gifts from the heart and a great way to spend time together.

My son makes gifts for family members. We also have him buy one gift from his money for the church gift drive for children. He enjoys it actually - shopping for someone else.

What he doesn't know is, after he pays for the gift, I sneak the amount back in to his bank - ssshhhhhhhhh!

My children always made or purchased small gifts for their best friends and for grandparents, etc.

It could be a framed picture they had painted themselves or something as simple as a fancy handkerchief for a grandmother. The gifts were their choice to make and they took the shopping or "making" very seriously.

I don't think it burdens a child to learn to be thoughtful of others. Children who learn to give feel good about themselves.

What does Elizabeth Smart have to do with it? I'm confused.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

I really don't know anyone who doesn't do that. I took my children shopping and let them pick out the presents for the adults in their lives and most everyone I know did the same.

I think we should be teaching and encouraging children to save their money, from their allowance or from doing odd jobs around the neighborhood, and helping anyone they see that need help, not only at Christmas time but anytime.
