Windows defender is not updating in windows 8.1?

I have updated to windows 8.1 there are virus and spyware protection updates available in notification area but every time during the update it stops and popup appears with the message. I have tried again and again but I am getting the same error. Do I need to install other antivirus program such as avast, but I want to stick with the same windows defender as it is a built-in product.

    This is just a guess, but do you have defender turned off while trying to update it?

      Yes it is turned on as indicating in real-time protection

        Try turning it off before you try to update it.
        Some programs won't update while they are active.

    I had the same problem, you have to uninstall any other security software you have installed on your computer..click the search menu top right, type in Windows Defender and it's now there.

    With Widows 8.1, the other hassle for me was the start menu, there is a website you can download the old start menu, works perfect.
