I can't go past the original 'Halloween'.

The 'Exorcist' might be a close second.
Last year, I met the actor who played the
little girl in the movie. All grown up,
and a bit messed up. IMHO.

    The Return of Count Yorga.

My mum took me and a friend to see it for my twelfth birthday. The scene where a detective is confronted by his girlfriend, who's been turned into a vampire, gets my vote as the scariest in cinema history; it still creeps me out. At one point I seriously considered making a run for the cinema exit. I had many a sleepless night afterward, thinking Count Yorga was creeping down the hall to get me. Damn those creaking floorboards.

    It's time to rise.

I've seen so many I could never pick a favorite. Also can't remember which I read and which I saw. I did a dissertation on Horror fiction in school, so have been all over it.

I think, though, that the two that really gave me the biggest creeps were:
    The Sixth Sense
    The Others
    Just great mind twisters.
Although a little violent for my taste, I also love the Hell Raiser series. Good mind twist in that, too.

I did like the Exorcist, although it didn't chill me like it did some people. Also liked the Birds alot. Hitchcock was a terrific story teller.

Now this was one of the scariest movies I have ever scene. It has been years since I saw it and it creeped me out just watching the clip below, which is from a TV special talking about scary movies.

As for mine, I can add 3 from Frank's list
    Psycho
    Alien
    An American Werewolf in London
but like others have said, hard to pick any favorite.
    Edit:
I'm also stealing from Midnight Oil.

    The Blob.

    Them!
    Tarantula
    The Thing (1982)
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Love the Universal Monsters, especially Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Wolf Man (Lon Chaney, Jr.), Frankenstein (Boris Karloff) and Dracula (Bela Lugosi).

"An American Werewolf In London" was an instant classic.

"King Kong" 1932 is definitely in contention.

      All 'Slasher' movies don't count.

Freddie Kruger had great potential as the best original character since the Big 3; Dracula, Wolfman, and Frankenstein.
But, IMO, they blew the movies by turning them into Teen drive-in flicks.

The most scary movies I remember were Hell Raiser II and Evil Dead II. I have seen some extremely scary Chinese movies that I cannot name.

First you mention Halloween as being 'perhaps your least favourite horror flick'. Then when it is mentioned again, in a list, you say 'all good'. Too weird!
          Go get him Michael Myers!

Perhaps my least favorite horror flick.

The Exorcist is probably the movie that scared me most.
However, I'm a huge fan the classics.
My favorite horror is "The Bride Of Frankenstein".

Although, "The Horror Of Dracula" with Christopher Lee, is right up there too.

And, the remake of "The Fly" with Jeff Goldblum is very good.

    Screw it!
There are just too many to choose from to name a favorite. :p

Now, the WORST horror flick ever made is in my signature.

Maybe it's not quite a "horror" movie, but Rosemary's Baby has got to be one of the creepiest, unsettling movies in existence.

Saw it once, and I don't plan on every seeing it again.

Preference for good story line as well acting.
Too many pathetic flicks claiming to be horror themed resulting in miserable continuity issues.
Too many "horror" movies that stretch the band of imagination beyond the breaking point into "I want my 90+ minutes back".

Have not seen a listing for HOUSE OF 1,000 CORPSES, by Rob Zombie.
THAT'S a true horror flick (unsure if it's based on actual events like Chainsaw Massacre, the 70's version) yet HAS A GOOD STORY LINE.
It's one I wish I could UN SEE.

HELLRAISER I, II, III, because it ENDS at 3, but since it's from HELL, continuance went nuts.

Preference for CLASSIC HORROR MOVIES starting in the 1920's to 1990's.

    CHEERS!!

Rob Zombie films can be very dodgy IMHO. The 'Halloween' remakes were awful! Maybe he should have stuck to the music career? But then ...

Great film. It Came from Beneath the Sea is another Harryhausen triumph. That movie and the transformation scene in The Nutty Professor scared the licorice allsorts out of me when I was head-high to a doorknob.

I've always had trouble suspending my disbelief in horror films.

It either has some supernatural BS that I cannot buy into,
or some crazy person that should just be shot or beaten down.

That being said, I do enjoy a good psychological thriller when I
can find them (keyword: good). The last one that I saw was
The Perfect Host, which I enjoyed very much indeed...
David Hyde Pierce was absolutely superb in this one:

I've never had a traditional horror movie scare me.

The one movie to ever get me to cover my eyes in fear and feel genuinely scared was "Misery" which was based off of one of Steven Kings novels.

"Misery" wasn't far off being a horror film I think. Kathy Bates and the sledgehammer etc. If that wasn't truly horrific I'm not sure what is? Stuff of nightmares!

I like this one. I prefer films that make you jump or make your blood chill rsather than any of those slasher type films. I did like slasher films when I was younger but they just aren't scary.

This one I remember watching when I was a kid. Maybe not really a horror film as it's a Disney film but a couple of bits I remember making me jump, and it was quite spooky at the time.

This was probably one film that made me jump more than a few times. I liked it, although though the ending was a tad disappointing. Still quite spooky though.
