Any dodge Caliber owners/experts here?

Today our money pit on wheels AKA our 2007 Dodge Caliber started flashing the engine light at us along with a ping, ping sound. The light comes on only in low gear as you try to accelerate. When do try to accelerate it bogs down, losing power and very slowly accelerates and on comes the blinking light. Once it accelerates to speed and you aren't pushing the gas pedal, the light stops blinking and stays lit.

Hey, I know this could be anything. Heck from what I've read it could just be a sensor of something. But I was wondering if anyone else has any input or tips to offer. My mechanic isn't open on weekends and I don't really want to take it to anyone else.

Thanks!

Regards,
jim

It could be serious. I would not drive it.

    Check out the Caliber forums.

Thanks Biz. I did check out the caliber forums and it seems it could be just about anything. Not going to drive unless I have to until my mechanic can look at it Monday.

    You're welcome, Jim.

All I know is that after the late 90s or 2000's, when those
check engine lights blink and then stay on , it's not good.

One time, I had come across someone with a Subaru
who had seriously overfilled their oil. The dash light went
as you described and the dealer told them to stop driving
immediately or it could damage the engine and void the warranty.

So, good you are waiting for your mechanic.

Any major auto parts store should be able to read the computer, most in the states here will do it for free.

The computer in the car will show the check engine light for literally hundreds of reasons; most are not serious (like major engine problems, for instance).

Thanks Steve and Dan. That's the sticky wicket here... It could be as simple as a sensor or it could dire. You're right Steve, I know I can take it to a local place to just get a quick read on the computer, but I elected to wait for the mechanic. And then in typical geek fashion decided to post to a forum, which in this context is kind of like asking a doctor to examine a possible broken leg via email . Which is defintely not to say that I don't apprecaite the input because I very much do!

Sounds like it could be an intake issue causing low compression. Could be a clogged filter screwing with the oxygen sensors to set off the light. Since we're talking about a Dodge, my bet is it will be something much more expensive.

Thanks guys! Just back from my mechanic and it's actually something simple and cheap to fix: crank sensor. Whew!
