Not many people probably noticed this story, but it has to rank with one of the "miracle" feats in sports. For a place with less than 150 registered adults playing the sport (all skill levels) to be winning games like this is really amazing.

What Slovenia has done would be like the state of Maine gathering all of its best hockey players and then competing in the Olympics against the likes of the USA, Russia, Canada and others.
The country has a population of about 2 million and fewer than 1,000 registered adult and younger players. There are seven ice rinks in the entire nation, and two are uncovered.
"It says somewhere we have 148 registered (adult) hockey players, but professionally it is about 50 or 60," said Slovenia captain David Rodman.
This is the first time in the Olympics for this country in Hockey and now their next game is against the defending Olympic champs team Sweeden. Great underdog story.

    It's a great story!

I'm a huge hockey fan and am obviously rooting for Canada....but...this team stole my heart...I love their spirit.

Since we're talking about Olympic hockey......did you see the Canada vs Latvia game today? That Latvian goalie was amazing!!!!! I was thrilled we won, but that kid deserves a gold medal.

It's nice to see someone say such a thing. That they are happy they won, etc... but want some competitor or competitive player to get recognition for doing so well.

Missed the game, but yeah, I heard about the game and read that Canada's goalie said that Latvian goalie put on one of the best performances they ever saw.

I think Tampa Bay drafted him, and it looks like they stole one most overlooked.

I am a huge hockey fan as well and I am obviously rooting for the US! The Slovenis story is great. I love to root for the underdogs and for them to actually have any shot at a medal at this point is awesome for them.

I like the article's analogy of this being like the state of Maine competing with Canada, US and Russia.

USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA.......

So after reading this thread this morning I am thinking "USA Hockey" and I end up watching the USA vs Canada women's game for the gold metal. What a great game! Absolutely fantastic.... except the US lost in overtime and it was extremely close (I will not complain about the refs, although I could of course). High level women's hockey is excellent the skull and compete level is right up there with the men. The overall speed may be a bit slower but the fun in watching a good hockey game is the same. The only difference is when they show a close up you notice pony tails, ear rings and eye make-up. You do not usually see that on NHL players. My favorite team, the Bruins, did have a player who I think may have worn make-up and had his nails done (he seemed to play like he did not want to break a nail), but Boston traded him to Dallas last summer.

Today's game was a nail biter! I'm very proud of our women's team.
