Why do you think the website is low on Alexa?

Found a newspaper website www.americanpress.com which seems very solid , with classifieds, updated news etc. Expected it to be under 100k Alexa-wise, but turns out only 600k+. Doesn't it seem a bit strange for such a website? Comments are welcome.

Not really. It could be poor SEO, it could indicate low interest content.

I have a website that does killer traffic for the niche - and it would show up very low in Alexa, simply because it only is relevant to a small % of online traffic, even though it ranks high with the % of people it's relevant to.

Judging a site solely on the Alexa rating is a mistake.

Alexa is a joke on steroids! WHAT? You don't believe me? What about the verisign scam that happened? Verisign decided that a lot of people were highjacking typos for their own purposes, so THEY should start doing it! You see, they held a VERY special position that only ONE company on the PLANET could hold! They decided that they should NEVER report a mistake!

The RIGHT thing, and what they were licensed to do was:

    1. Get the nameserver IP!
    2. If it was found, return the IP from the nameserver at that IP!
    3. If it WASN'T found, return an ERROR!

So what did THEY do? They changed step three to return the IP of VERISIGN! Alexas ranking gave verisign a 21, IIRC! The WORLD had to rewrite software to compensate. I don't know if they ever FIXED the scam. TODAY, they are over 9000.

Anyway, the alexa numbers are driven by a lo of things like toolbars and various pixel related counters, they are not 100% accurate. As the verisign garbage showed even the "real" counts may not mean much.

I have already had a feeling that Alexa is not a reliable source to check the ranking of a site. Inflatable and too tempting to try to fix it up. I've seen some sites selling On Flippa for $10k with Alexa ranking 70k and on the other hand there are things like Waze (sold for 1B to Google, thought they are not exactly a website) with Alexa ranking 15k. So it's not good enough to rely on Alexa entirely.

Alexa is not very accurate from what I gathered, in my opinion the results you get on alexa is the type of visitors that come to that site... some might not have the toolbar installed (unless this has changed) because i have a education related site with very poor alexa but i know it gets decent traffic... while an internet marketing site will generally get alexa ranks easier.

by the way reloading, or simply visiting a site often can boost a sites alexa I know this from doing web design work and reloading/editing pages can lead to 100 if not 1000s if its a big project of site loads.
