Hi,
I was on a vacation for 15 days & 3 days ago when I got back I saw that everything which had been making money online was gone.

I GOT HACKED

My Story: (Long Story Short)
I have been into Internet Marketing from past 3 years now. I own only 2 websites. One of the website had been making me $350-$400 per day from Adsense using my own unique method. The other site which I recently purchased had been making me nearly $15-$20 per day using CPA (MaxBounty) the method which I use on this site is not unique but worked out to make a small income.

I have never created more than one email account. I only have one gmail account as there was never a need to create more.

Being a internet marketer I need to create accounts on various website online. So I always use Roboform to save my password & I always use Password Generator to create different password for each website.

My biggest mistake I always did is never took back up seriously.

3 days ago when I got back home I saw that everything was gone. The password of my gmail account is changed, all my website files in my hosting account is deleted, all the important files which I had on my hard drive is deleted, my roboform data file is deleted, I have 2 VPS & nothing is found in my VPS.

I am completely doomed.

I wish I could have taken back up of everything. I have learnt my lesson and I request all fellow members to please make a habit of taking back ups.

I am sure you all will tell that I can get everything I have lost. I tried everything I could & I could only recover something which is really not important.

About Roboform -
Roboform stores all your data file in "My Documents" folder which was deleted. I now realized that Roboform has an option of saving all the data files online which I never created. I am so used to Roboform that I never had to remember anything apart from the master password. I had enable Roboform everywhere but not Roboform online. Even the passwords to my VPS was stored in Roboform.

About Gmail -
The only password I remember is my gmail account password as I have created several years ago. I was so lazy that I never added my phone to my account nor I had a secondary email address added to it. I don't even remember the answer of my security questions. Every time I logged to my gmail account, it always asked me for my phone number & I always ignored it. I could have got the password of my gmail account if I never ignore that part. This gmail account had details about everything that I had purchased online, SEO tools, VPS details, courses purchased online & everything else. Even my adsense account is linked to this gmail account. I have wrote a mail to gmail & adsense about my situation & I still yet to receive any reply.

About hosting -
I am sure you people will tell contact your hosting company & ask them to restore. I had been using hosting provided by hostgator. The 1st thing I did was contacted them to restore my files & explained everything that had happen. After they restored I realized that there was nothing to resort. Hostgator takes a backup every week. I got hacked 2 or 3 days after I left (assumption) & I checked 15 days after I got hacked. Hostgator restores only how your hosting account was on the previous week & not your preceding previous backup. I was almost on tears when I realized this.

About recovering files on Hard Drive -
I used every application available online to recover the lost files on hard drive. I was happy to see that my roboform data files were getting recovered but when I opened them it was corrupted. Most of files which were successfully recovered are images & few files which are not of much use.

About my computer -
My computer is always kept on 24/7 as I run applications like SenukeXcr, No Hand SEO, GSA Ranker, Bookmarking Demon and so on. Before leaving for the trip I had left my computer ON as it will running few of my campaigns.

None of the above would have happened if I had an habit of taking back up everyday. I am writing this because I don't want any of you to suffer same as what I going through. So please make a habit of taking back up everyday.

The biggest problem now is not that I got hacked but is about my expenses. As I had been earning really good online I started to make some commitments & I just have some pennies remaining in my account.

I know I will soon be out of all this. I have enough knowledge & skills to make money online again like before.

I have one questions for you people.

Should I go after the people who did this to me or just forget it & move on ?

If you know who they are or can find out, I'd go after them -- IF you have proof enough to do anything about it. If you can't meet those conditions, you're kinda screwed in that department, too.

If it makes you feel better - you're not the first one that got the hard lesson. It took me 9 months to rebuild my site once when it was mangled. I know the pain.

Take it as a lesson and move on. Just build it better the next time - and find every one of the best security measures and hosts in the book to protect it. And back it up, this time.

Thanks for the reply HeySal.. I decided to just let go & move on because some where it is even my mistake that I should have taken back up of everything I do online. I have learnt my lesson & will make sure this never happens again.. Thanks..

I don't know why but i feel either you are telling a story or you are hiding the major point in the story. The reason i say that is there are some not connecting links in your story. Especially the one about passwords.

I have nothing to gain by spending my time in writing this. It is up to you weather U wanna believe or not. Thanks for taking time to reply.

Hostgator may have a monthly backup and I would try that first. I have been hacked before by a person who was known to me. He was reported to the police by my webhoster but I don't know whether anything came out of it.

What I found odd was that you did not check your sites during the 15 days you were on holiday. I always make sure I have internet access when I am on holiday. If not, you should really have got someone you trust to check things for you.

I never checked my site when I was on vacation because everything was automated. I had scheduled posting of articles on my wordpress blog for like 20days & I even had them added to SenukeXcr which was running on my VPS to create Backlinks. I felt there will be no need for me to think about my work but never thought something like this will ever happen. But, here after I will make sure that I check my site no matter where I go. Thanks for the reply derekwong2..

Hi. I hope this serves as a cautionary tale to most, but we all know that to many it will not. The old "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" maxim certainly applies, here.

My near tragedy and how it was prevented. I back-up my computer to a separate partition which mirrors my main partition and I also back up the same way to an external drive. One day, without knowing it I deleted a folder of all my tropical fish photos. Years of work. Then, as I ran my backups, I overwrote the folder on every other partition. A few days went by before I even realized what happened. When I did, I nearly had a stroke.

Fortunately, I use a service called CrashPlan which every few hours scans my hard drive and uploads any changes to a server. I was able to simply go back a few days, locate and download the photo folder to my hard drive and move on with life. Best $3 per month I have ever spent. Total security and the peace of mind that comes with it.

Additionally, I have a simple AppleScript that FTP's all of my websites to my desktop every Sunday night and then CrashPlan uploads them for added protection.

It took less than an hour to implement this foolproof system for total security.

There are myriad password protection schemes and mine is fairly robust. I have never had an issue and hope that I never do.

Additionally - I don't trust my own mother with anything of great importance. I trust ya' mom, now cut the cards.

        Cheers. - Frank

There is something else you can try. You can look at your site in Google's cache and try and recover as much content as possible. You can even try to recover the original site structure.

My webhosts have gone down when I was on holiday so I always checked everyday.

I basically got hacked FOUR times! ONCE was after I INTENTIONALLY made a HUGE mistake because some #$%^&*( couldn't do some basic things, and came to me for help. I reduced permissions on MY PERSONAL server to allow them to do something else elsewhere. Anyway, I didn't keep tabs on when they were done, and never increased the security back to its BASE level.

The first time, some jerks got in and used my system for storage of a bunch of stuff infringing copyrights all over. They are lucky I didn't have more time, money, or power, because I would have their paychecks garnished for likely their entire lives, AFTER a stint in jail for a few years or a decade or two. My "host" didn't tell me until things were bad, and never told me HOW bad, and I had to take care of OTHER things first. Every SECOND they raised my bill MORE! I asked the "HOST" to help, which they ARE required to do, and they just LAUGHED! I kept SOME evidence for a year and, if I came up on charges, you could BET I would implicate the host AND the hacker. I had MY logs, but logs are like tracks in the snow. I can see when/how the hacker got into MY system, but the person that LET them in must do the same. The easiest way to find that out is the "HOST", and they wouldn't talk! BTW I NEVER did business with that company again! Ironically, after that, I toyed with making a program to get rid of these problems. I never did. I came up with an improved design recently, so MAYBE...

Once, I offered a free service. Some people managed to do a bit more than intended. I got rid of the service. I guess TECHNICALLY they could claim they did nothing wrong. It is gone now though.

Another time, someone used a special kit that used a program flaw to get in and use a UNIX convention to get enough rights to email. NO, I didn't have an open relay. But MOST relays ARE open to any "users" on the system, and some programs ASSUME they have the rights, and will fail otherwise. And it emailed to people on their list and many bounced. I managed to find that, and stopped it.

Another time, just recently, someone apparently found a flaw in tomcat and used it to create a system to distribute viruses. AGAIN, they used a kit to facilitate it. I got suspicious when a server I wasn't using got overloaded! December was bad, January got to 60% of my bandwidth allowance. February got to 50% before I stopped THAT! They worked on it from last june or july, but apparently didn't have it actually running until December. HEY, It got me off my rear, and I started doing some things I planned for MONTHS! TECHNICALLY, I may have gotten out of this one unhurt.

Sadly, this can happen to anyone. A LOT of programs have problems, and UNIX has a few things that can be exploited. Of course windows is pretty much DESIGNED to have such problems. And this IS over the span of 14 years.

I remember the first time my pc got hacked.

It was a win 95 box. I annoyed a gamer. He renamed my windows folder to
Rwindows and wrote a com that rebooted me and then echoed " F... Y.. as*hole"
      in a loop.

I had every port closed possible. I thought I was safe.
      HA.

Yep, glad l do party flyers for a hub business, obviously no guarantees that the company will go bankrupt, etc.

But if it did, l could just grab all my flyers and load them up to another similar business website.

Or use paid advertising and set it up on a website, that Google likes.

Or as you have been saying, l can backup everything!

As for websites, SBI eventhough expensive and less flexible than most if very stable.

I started my first site there in DEC 2007, and l had about 3 tech issues, that were quickly fixed.

Compare that to Hostgator, that you can do pretty much anything on, and has so many tech issues l have lost count.

But support is excellent, so l put up with the occasional, "won't publish" etc error.

Sorry to hear about your issue, l have lived through two Computer crashes.

First it misbehaved, and l made it worse by using a lethal free cleaner, that wiped everything off, and stored it on its area, course l pressed the wrong button, and everything was gone. Thankfully l backup the very important stuff onto CD, but not fun.

Second time the computer got so bad l had to wipe the OS off and reboot.

At the moment my Laptop, (1 year old) has been crashing or freezing randomly.

I thankfully found a great piece of software, and it is purring, (well 99% of the time it is)!

Yep IM can be a serious pain, but worth it in the end.

Probably explains why we end up here, to laugh it off, or try to.

Track down some of these, A*** if you can, but forget about it and more on if it is too expensive or time consuming.

No point throwing a year away on one of these lowlifes, if it is costing you a profitable site.

I don;t know ... possibly I'd go after then if I knew who had done it and I had the proof to actually prove it. I've been having scares with my websites recently and I installed a few new security things today and backed up all my files on my sites.

I had an old website a few years ago and I didn't put any security on it (foolishly) and it got hacked. So I learned from that mistake and now have "heavy" security on my sites and backup constantly.

While it is true it is best for your own health to forgive rather than carry a grudge, AND it is true that it is almost impossible to recover any money lost, there is still the point of outing these ripoff demons if you can - for one thing to make others aware if you know who they are and for another because law enforcement will likely not do anything unless (a) the money lost is really substantial (which might be the case if you put a group of victims together) AND (b) when they keep hearing the same name or links in complaints they may actually take action against them.

I would at the very least therefore report it to IC3.gov

(The Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C)

p.s. very sorry for your loss and a very hard lesson. thanks for sharing the NECESSITY of backing up, having good security AND paying attention to your business all the time.
