I was in Marc's grocery store in Northeast Ohio.

I bought three each of 12oz, 12 pack of Vernors pop.

The regular price of the pop was $14.94 for the three 12 packs. There was a sale on the pop with an
in store coupon that the cashier tore off a pad at the cash register three each for $9.

$3 each per 12 pack with the in store coupon.

They charged me tax on the full price of $14.94 and not the $9 that I actually spent.

How can they charge me tax on money I didn't not spend?

Should tax charged been on the $9 that I spent and not the $14.94 regular price?

The tax they charged me on the purchase was $1.05. The sale tax is at 7%.

Shouldn't the tax have been 63 cents.

Nope - in most states you are charged tax on the retail value (original price) of the products.

When the store rings up the sale the original price is showing prior to taking off the coupon value. The tax is computed on the price before coupon listings.

If you had asked at the time you made the purchase - they would have explained it. Only reason I'm answering is because I love Vernor's!

So if I go to Best Buy and buy a new flat screen tv for $1000 and it's
on sale for $650, I pay sales tax on $1000?

      Still Confused In Ohio,

No, because that price is an advertised sale price, not an advertised price "with coupon".

You would be taxed on the $650.

          Thanks Miss Terrak:

I think I get this now.

Where they get you is with the advertised price with coupon.

I am getting so tired of everytime I turn around there is this tax
          and that tax,

          Thanks

I hear ya, but you had better get used to it. Taxes are going nowhere any time soon.

                Ha!

That goes without saying and is always a given. But they certainly won't be doing a disappearing act.
