Why Don't You Hang Out In General Discussion Anymore?

I can't help but notice quite a few members here, especially long time ones,
who hardly, if ever, hang out and post in general discussion anymore.

I'm curious as to why.

I'm not going to try to color this thread with any of my own thoughts on the
subject.

Instead, I'd just like to hear from those who mostly stay in OT and what
their reasons are for doing so.

It seems like most of the action is in the first forum, but I do sometimes use the Today's Topics feature to see what people are posting, as I did here to find your post.

The tone of general forum have become much more aggressive in recent months. I just don't want to get upset over some arguments that would affect the rest of my day.

Too much obscure self promotion up there right now. While I breeze through there every day, I rarely find anything worth reading or posting to. I read some of the technology posts because I'm a techno-moron and figure it will absorb sooner or later if I continue to be exposed to it - but I can so rarely offer an answer myself, there's nothing to say. Reading "how I made 5,000 bucks in 24 hours" has become like surfing the get rich quick websites.

Just waiting for things to normalize up there again.

Heh, I thought I was the only one...

The General Discussion forums is really becoming a little
bit crazier as we go. Hardly find a lot of good, free info
as I used to when I first joined (maybe it's because I've
    already grown out of it).

Funny timing - I was just thinking I've reached "time to back off" stage myself. Some recent problems have led to me being stressed financially for the first time in a long time and I find my patience is greatly reduced. I've always checked the WF when I take a break from working but I've increased my efforts and a 20 minute cat nap might be a better idea right now.

People come and go. Forums change. Could be our reactions are based on what's happening in our own lives as much as what is really going on in the forum. In the past few weeks, I've noticed some cleaning up going on that I think is improving the WF overall.

I'm trying some new things and redoubling efforts that have worked before.
Just in case it helps, I'm also keeping my fingers crossed that I can pull it off. Really hard to write with your fingers crossed, isn't it?:p

Ok - back to squeezing out the creative juices. Lunch break is over. And the answer is "no" - if I manage to climb out of this hole in time, there will NOT be a WSO about it!!!!!!! Well, maybe I'll write a free report about how not to step in the damned hole in the first place (just kidding!)

For 5 years now whenever I try to participate in the main forum I find one of these things that turn me off.

    Hostile Environment
Not much response to anything I ever posted
Clique Environment - only certain people talk to certain people
Gotten much weirder with the 'self-mod' deal

I will try again next year maybe.

Alexa, the truth is, the forum us impoverished by quite a few people who
don't post nearly as much as they used to, if at all.

Even though I've only been here 2 1/2 years, when I first got here, the
main discussion forum was loaded with great posts on methods and tips.

Go there now and take a look at the first page. Mostly you'll find basic
questions, rants and very few golden nuggets.

I used to hate going to bed at night because I was afraid I'd miss

            KimW -

I first joined late in 2002 and the conversations on the WF were so knowledgeable that I lurked for a year. When my computer went kapoof I wasn't here for a while and lost my login info. Just seemed easier to rejoin so I did that. Originally used one of those silly forum names anyway...

Let's face it - now it's a different place but just that - different. Must admit it's sometimes entertaining to watch the sessions going on in the test section. Fun to estimate how many times they'll post before they figure out it doesn't count Clearly, doesn't take much to entertain me.

Didn't realize until you mentioned it that I also have a lot of trust in those regulars in the OT. Hadn't thought about that before. At least most of us here are over the age of consent.

When you look at what Allen has created here - it's damned impressive. This place is almost self sustaining (the "almost" is because it does require the oversight and slap downs to keep it as spam/scam free as possible.)

We sound like a bunch of geezers sitting on the front porch talking about the "good old days". Sometimes they're just "old".

Pass the jug, seasoned - I need a swig. Miss seeing you around here - some days you were the only person making any sense!

Steve, I never told you this, but when I first got here and saw how
prolific you were (and still active in the main forum) I was absolutely in
      awe of you.

I'd read your posts and how clearly you would state your point and with

Then you kind of disappeared and I never understood why.

No it doesn't Steven, and the above posts by Seasoned Patrician Kay HeySal and all the other responders pretty much echo my feelings.

So many people that used to be "names" here no longer post at all. Most of the people that post in OT I'd be happy to work with and JV with, while in the main forum now it's like a few of the above names people mentioned, the main forum is not how it used to be.

Kim, I remember the first time we had a discussion here at the OT. It
was about music. We had this trivia thing going.

It was probably the most fun I'd had since coming here.

But don't get me wrong, there are some really good things going on
      elsewhere.

TimG started a great thread on article writing. Granted, it did get moved
to Mind Warriors, but there is some really great stuff in it.

Anyway, I'm very grateful for the few people I've met here who I
really respect, admire and have a great time with...you being one of

During my short time here, I've noticed in the main forum
there have been quite a few arguments about what
should and shouldn't be posted there.

And it seems to me that it's often the posts that
actually have substance that tend to incite a big
fuss and some people just get way too serious
    about this self mod business.

I think there's another dynamic involved that hasn't been mentioned.

What I liked years ago was all topics were in one place. For me, I liked the SEO stuff and product reviews. Now, those topics have their own forum instead of being posted in one place. Instead of being in the main to draw my attention to other topics, they're in a place of their own.

This means there's fewer threads in the main that interest me. And since the SEO and review forums now don't get as much attention, I rarely go to those forums.

In other words, the main forum has been "diluted", with fewer topics of interest.

Also, if you've been in IM for any length of time, many of the threads are about subjects many of us are very familiar with. I've answered "what is RSS" type threads literally 50 times, and it just isn't as interesting the 47th time as it was the first couple of times.

So for me, repetition and dilution are two reasons I don't spend as much time in the main as I used to.

But many of the quality posts have been made in the war room instead.

That's why the main forum has changed - if you are a war room member it doesn't matter - the posts still exist. It didn't really consciously occur to me until you guys just mentioned it.

As for why I hang in OT well shit where else can I vent my weird sense of humour and chat with fellow IM fanatics all in one place.

But even OT has changed - I wish Kev and sarge were still here but they are probably actually doing something normal - like work.

Sometimes the slanging matches on OT were in real time, no sooner would you post a rebuff than 3 more cheeky comments would appear which was very funny.

The greatest problem I see with the General Forum is the sheer number of posts resulting in a post winding up on page 3 or 4 in no time. I think this is the reason so many posts are seemingly ignored. The frustrating thing is, a huge number of posts are on the same subject!

Another irritation is the total inability of some posters to read the thread before posting. We wind up with the same question being asked, and answered, several times in the same thread, as well as in other threads on the same subject.

"Thread drift" is inevitable to some extent, but when someone misunderstands a post and finishes up arguing about a totally different topic I despair!

It's a bit like the old WW1 story about a message passed through the trenches to HQ by word of mouth. It started out as "Send us reinforcements, we're going to advance". HQ was mystified to receive it as "Send us 3 and fourpence (pre decimal UK currency) we're going to a dance"

No doubt apocryphal, but it sums up what I so often see.

I pretty much agree with the other older Warriors.

What gets tedious for me is idiots who post a topic again when it
has previously been well covered often with a near identical header
before .... sometimes (grrrrrr) several times still on page 1. As for previous
      forum pages ...forget it.

Ray - the same problem with the WSO forum right now -- there are so many products being put on there that my WSO was on the front page for less than a day. Sales were decent on front page - after that, forget it.

At some point maybe the influx of people should be stemmed. Many are entering with no interest in the community in general - they just want to sell their stuff or buy something. It's no wonder the cohesive feeling is being lost. It's like trying to build a community at an airport.

Sal, you're so right about the WSO forum. I wonder if the best bet is to have it categorised. I was thinking of perhaps:

    Articles and ebooks - fresh.

Articles and ebooks - all over the web since 2006.

    Software.

    SEO.

    Link Building.

Get to #1 in Google cons.

The last one is of course a special category for those ever popular "Destroy the competition! How I get #1 placings for fiercely competitive terms like 'how to cook a granny' - 2,740,000 competitors!"

I'm sorry to be so cynical, but I get annoyed when I see WSOs such as your's vanishing in no time at all to be replaced by junk. That's not to say they're all junk, but I'm sure you know what I mean.

Again, this happens on the general forum. An interesting thread starts up but when I look back an hour or so later, it's sunk without trace!

I slide through the main a couple times a day to see whats being posted. If its something other than the thinly veiled self promo post of a new wannabeguru with a whole 3 posts, someone asking a question thats been asked 1000 times in the last 6 months, and is probably already asked and answered right on the 1st page, or the random fantasy post that goes something like 'I made 45,000 last week from Click Bank, here's how!' from the same person that had a post last week asking how clickbank works....then i may read it.
