Talking with a friend, and she said something that made me think. This one might be interesting...

You've lost your original voice forever, but you get to choose the voice of some other person. Whose would it be?

Or James Earl Jones .. (voice of Darth Vader)

For singing, maybe John Kay. For speaking, I like John B. Wells voice a lot...

Second choice might be Earl Nightingale.

Hmmm.......while there are probably those here that would think it was funny to strap me with Edith Bunker's voice, if I get to chose, it would be Gracie Slick unless I have to chose one that nobody is still using. Then I think I'd switch over to Janis Joplin's.

A dead heat. Either John Facenda (legendary Philly broadcaster and voice of NFL films - when they used film) or ubiquitous documentary VO talents Peter Coyote or David Ogden Stiers (yes, from MASH). The best 3 voices on the planet (one deceased).

    Cheers. - Frank

P.S. Sorry to our fearless leader. Just saw the "one" requirement. Going with John Facenda, but still slipping the other two in. lol

      Barb,
      Macgyver of course.
You with Richard Dean Anderson's voice would be a lot like me sounding like Susan Sarandon. Sure, they're pleasant enough voices, but they'd be... odd, in the context.

      Devid,
      Don LaFontaine
The voice everyone knows, and almost no-one can put a name to.

I didn't make the connection, for example. Looked him up on YouTube, and thought, "Oh, that's who that is!" He seems like a pretty cool guy.

      Frank,

The "Choose one" was more because those 3 are so different. Not that Peter Coyote and David Ogden Stiers are exactly vocal twins, but they share a lot of traits.

For what I'm wondering, a single choice is more interesting, though.

      Sal,

Edith? Umm... No. Not hardly. I'd have gone with Loretta Swit, personally. Or a 1960s Lauren Bacall. For you, that is. Not me. 'Cause, you know, that would be silly.

Th idea hit me when my friend mentioned that she hated hearing recordings of her voice. We went through the "That's because you don't hear yourself the way everyone else does" part, and into other stuff. A whole "external representation of yourself" thing.

That got me rambling down a new track. Always a dangerous proposition...

If you take commercial interest out of the equation, my choice would be different. I chose Amy because I love her singing voice and could make a bundle of cash with it, as she did.

If it's just a "talking" everyday voice, I'd choose Lauren Bacall. It's not too far from my real voice except that she's more sultry and seductive.

That's kind of what's got me curious.

Voices represent something to us. The same one can be different things to different people, so you can't really learn much by the choice someone else makes (unless they choose Phyllis Diller...). Still, it would be interesting to know what the chosen voice means to the person choosing, and whether that's how they see themselves or how they'd like to.

I chose Dion over Streisand because I also like Celine's quirky speaking voice. Her voice with it's slight accent has a cadence I find interesting.

But also, I've been a singer and I'd love to open my mouth and have THAT voice flow out!

I based my choice on the "commercial" aspect. Having been deeply involved in radio, TV and theatre most of my adult life and not having been blessed with "golden pipes," I was going after what could have greatly advanced my career in the aforementioned disciplines.

If not for that, I'd have gone with Fran Drescher for her unique ability to annoy so many people simply by opening her mouth, regardless of the words spoken. That, my friend, is talent.

I chose Cary Grant because his voice is melodic, sexy, and authoritative when needed. My other choices had the same quality. Gregory Peck for one. Jimmy Stewart is in the ballpark but not as eloquent as Grant and Peck. Denzel Washington has that type of voice too. So does Morgan Freeman. If I'm going to get any kind of complement these days it's for my voice. A few people have told me I should be doing voiceovers.

Thank you, Joe, for the compliment.

Waaay back when, I did do some broadcasting and acting. Ten years after that my hubby and I did a ministerial radio show as well.

It's just that when I get excited or am in a hurry, my voice goes much higher. As a matter of fact, two of the doctors I used to work for would put their hand on my shoulder and say, "Terra, say that again, but this time, not in Minnie Mouse Mode.", Hahaha!

I can relate to the excitability. My wife does that when she gets excited, whether it's happy or (gulp!) mad. Scary person! I'd take "Minnie Mouse Mode" any day. LOL

I could tell that you've done it for awhile because of the control in your voice and the fluctuation when speaking. It sounds natural and not canned, even though you're obviously reading someone's material.

I've been told that I have a radio voice. I have a deep voice. I've worked on the phone for years and done many sales presentations both in homes and businesses. I've also had people tell me that I have good communication skills. That was an area where I scored very high while in the military.

I've been thinking about doing webinars recently, but I'm not sure what topic I'd be comfortable teaching, what I'd sell on the backend, if anything, or if I'd just sell the webinar as a product. I'm so confused. LOL

Anyway, just keep doing what you're doing. :-)

I chose John B. Wells because his deep voice comes across (to me) with a soothing authenticity that makes what he says seems believable, which is quite a paradox because he has some very strange, on-the-fringe beliefs that are far removed from what I believe.

I might have chosen Earl Nightingale if the recording quality back in his day was as good as it is now.

Actually Paul, if I recall correctly, your voice has a similarly deep, resonant quality that those guys have.
