Firefox problems. Is this "memory leak?'

Greetings. Was not sure where to post this question but since it seems that all the "Braniacs" can be found here, I thought this might be the best bet.

I run a Mac Pro with 24 GB of RAM. For the past few weeks, I am having an issue where Firefox is behaving very badly. After booting up in the AM, I can see by a program I run that after I open everything I plan to use that day, I have 20 GB of memory at my disposal. It is not uncommon for me to have 30 Firefox windows open at once. After 3 or 4 hours my "free memory" has been reduced from 20 GB to 0 GB and I am forced to quit and relaunch Firefox which will then put my available memory back to 20 GB, but the reduction starts again, immediately after reopening the 20 to 30 windows by utilizing the "restore previous session" function.

Obviously this is becoming a real PITA. Is this something that anyone else has experienced? Any ideas how to remedy it? Yes, I know I can close some windows, but is that really necessary on a modern browser?

Thanks in advance for any assistance that anyone may be able to offer.

Cheers. - Frank

YEs. It's lousy. 'Tis one reason why I now use Chrome for all my serious web work.

    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb...uch-memory-ram

    might help.

I just gave up and use Chrome - no problems.

Hi and thanks for responding. Yeah - I figured that was going to be the solution. I was just getting comfortable with Firefox after many, many years of using Safari. lol

I did download and use Chrome for a few hours recently when I was forced to in order to actually get something done. I guess I'll give it an honest test drive and see how that works out.

      Thanks again for your assiatance.

These days, it's almost always a plugin rather than the core program.

Look at the last few plugins you've added. I'll bet dollars to donuts, or pennies to parfaits, or nickels to nachos it is one of those.

If it is a plugin you only use once in a while, deactivate and turn it on when you need it, then remember to turn it off again.

If it is a plugin you need all the time, and don't want to switch to another browser, consider adding the "Memory Restart" plugin. It will give you a constant readout of your memory use, and allow you to restart Firefox with a click of one button at any time.

Hi Joe. If yu are referring to a Firefox plug-in, I don't employ a single one. I wouldn't know what a FF plugin was if it bit me on the butt. I run the initial basic download, only. Perhaps that's part of the problem.

That sounds good. I will investigate that.

Thanks so much. Cheers. - Frank

Recent versions of Firefox have serious problems. I use it as my main browser, but the conflicts with NIS' Identity Safe and frequent crashes when I use Google are about to push me to Safari.

I'm running Chrome and have lost a bunch of my bookmarks recently. What's the advantage of Safari over Chrome?

I'm learning to hate Chrome with a passion. I only use it to visit newspaper sites, but if you sit on a page too long (like a blog with multiple stories) it freezes up. If you minimize a dynamic page for any length of time it crashes. Flash crashes on it regularly. Some times of videos won't play at all. It's the most annoying browser of the four I use, and that isn't even taking into consideration the privacy issues with it.

Yeah, I've experienced some of the same stuff. I recently had issues with some sites I'd bookmarked and was able to isolate and save the internal file in time to save a lot of work. But it was a close call.

I deleted and reinstalled Chrome trying to resurrect the missing bookmarks and it seems to be running a lot better now. I've run Firefox in the past and didn't care for it. IE is out. That's why I was asking about Safari.

So, basically the general consensus is that there isn't a browser on the planet worth a flyin' crap.

            Long live Netscape. lol

The reason I use four different browsers is because each has their strengths and weaknesses. I generally use them for different purposes, although there can be some overlap.

I would LOVE to find one primary browser I could use for everything, but so far no luck at that. I'd probably use Opera more if they ever fixed their scroll wheel problem. The only reason I don't use it more is because pages jump all over the place when you use the scroll wheel -- sometimes they even start scrolling in the wrong direction before it corrects.

Right now I use IE 11 and Firefox 27 the most. Haven't tried Safari. Perhaps that will be the next one I try.

Keep backups of them. They're easy to export to a file and import back later, or even move/copy to a new machine.
What's the advantage of Safari over Chrome?
Aside from not being a Google product? Probably not much. It's a common connection between the PC, the iPads, and the Mac, for the most part.

Do you mean that literally? As in you have opened 30 different instances of FF
or do you mean you open about 30 different tabs?

That is an important distinction when asking for help.

Next. you most likely do have plug ins being used. such as flash and silver lite.
I would tell you where to look but on macs its a different sequence of buttons to
find it then windows and I don't remember it off the top of my head.

I have been having issues with FF as well .... BUT ...
I have narrowed it down to a conflict between flash and silver light.
chances are you are NOT using silver light ... unless your using a
movie service ...like netflix or youtube premium.

My issues did not arise until i did a windows update. Then everything
went down hill. Rock solid systems ... acting all kinds of weird.
    win7 win 8 and win 8+

My immediate fix for now ... because I also use a huge amount of tabs
and open programs at once is to simply shut off silver light when I am
    not using it.

That is not fixing the problem. Its like nasal spray for a runny nose.
When I turn off flash or silver light ... or both ... everything
is back to normal for me.

maybe this helps you a bit until a patch comes along.

Renting a motel room by the hour has nothing to do with 'sleep.'

      Tabs are for wimps.
That is an important distinction when asking for help.
I always assume that the details of my posts are relayed by osmosis. That cuts down on the typing.
Next. you most likely do have plug ins being used. such as flash and silver lite.
If they are included in the plain-vanilla install, then I am guilty as charged.
I would tell you where to look but on macs its a different sequence of buttons to find it then windows and I don't remember it off the top of my head.
      No problemo.

Well, there's your main malfuction: Windoze.

I thought nasal spray was just a way to get a buzz.
When I turn off flash or silver light ... or both ... everything
is back to normal for me.
Normal? That word does not exist in my personal vocabularly.
maybe this helps you a bit until a patch comes along.
Right. And maybe if I bend over and grunt, monkeys will fly out of my butt.

No - more likely I will spend this life in browser purgatory and the next life in browser hell.

Thanks for the help. Cheers. - Frank

Not entirely sure why you say that. I also use Firefox, with no plug-ins, and often have a few dozen tabs open. Rarely do I use more than one window/instance of the program. Generally, I don't have any problem, although some sites run so many ads that they use up more than their share of CPU and memory resources.
