I Didn't Know This About Eddie Van Halen

Since my son is half-Chinese (and half Whatever-I-Am which, since I put it in capital letters, makes it official), I sometimes look into who else is half-Chinese. I was surprised to learn that Eddie Van Halen is half Chinese. I had no idea, but it's not like I ever really followed the band and the personalities that make it up.

UPDATE: I've seen several sites saying that the Van Halen brothers are 1/2 Chinese-Malaysian (seems to be duplicate content published all over the Internet), but I don't know what that is based that on. The Van Halen brothers said that their mother was Indonesian and didn't mention anything about Chinese or Malaysian. They credit their father as their major musical influence. Their father was Dutch and went to many countries as a travelling musician and it was his travels that took him to Indonesia, where he settled for a number of years and met his wife.

Yeah, it is interesting how sometimes that isn't so apparent.

Despite what people may say, there are plenty of asians in the US that do just fine. I have some cousins that are half japanese, and a japanese aunt, and I never heard them speak of any problems, etc... Hopefully canadians are fine with that also.

Asians in Canada generally do very well, even ones who arrived here with very little money.

I married into a Japanese family ... who's parents spent time in
      a US interment camp.

It is amazing to me that ...

      A) there are no hard feelings.
      B) never a bad word about the US. not once.

Yeah, a lot of people mention about the internment. The oldest cousin was still not THAT old, so they didn't have to contend with that.

We WERE at war, and they were easy to spot. Germans would have had the same kind of trouble if they spoke german.

Yeah, that IS a stereotype, that asians tend to work together, have good families, work hard, and treasure knowledge and wisdom. Hopefully nobody considers THAT racist.

Germans where put into camps during W.W.I and II.

It's a long story, but my grandparents where almost put in a camp because of my Grandfather being a founder of a German Society Club. Because my father had already enlisted in the Army they where given a pass on detainment, but my Grandfather was still watched for a while.

I can see some oriental in Eddy - but I'm completely lost on seeing any in his brother.

Funny how people see things differently. I can see it in Alex, but not at all in Eddie.
