I learned French for 5 years at school and passed an exam too. However, when I went to Paris and asked a Gendarme, in French, where the Louvre was, I actually thought he was going to hit me.

I had to ask someone later if I'd said something wrong but it was fine.

Don't ask for a pipe, even in a hardware store. Trust me on this one!

  • No need to ask for nonfat lattes or egg whites only. The food is rich, but the portions are small enough that you don't have to worry about diet substitutions.

Well I see I passed the 16 things not to say in Paris test. Maybe that's why I found the people there absolutely delightful. I heard a lot of horror stories from tourists there, but I never experienced anything close to what a lot of people say, and I went there several times while I lived in Germany.

Also, as in any country - the question isn't "where is.............it's "what's the best way to get to........".

It also helps tremendously if you at least try to ask them things in French. In general, I didn't find Parisians to be any better or worse than people in any other major city.

That's why I think I was treated well. I tried french first and even when I slaughtered it, people seemed to react kindly to me showing the respect for them to at least try to speak the language of the country first. Same in Germany.

My mom and I visited Paris when I was in high school and I was the one who was trying to speak to the Parisians in my broken French. They were most helpful and, I think, a little delighted that an American (especially a kid) would actually try and speak their language.

'The Ugly American' comes to mind. I've lived overseas and I've seen Americans do things that were absolutely atrocious and I just wanted to go and hide. Even remember a woman saying she couldn't wait to get back to the States so she could have some 'delicious white bread.' (and this was in Paris) - now THAT'S sick!!

We have a horrible reputation overseas and, unfortunately, most of it is probably due.
