They don't have a chance! If they act TOO blustery, china will change their attitude.

I was I hoping I'd be the next superpower but it doesn't seem like that's gonna happen.

I don't think any one country is going to end up on top. It's going to be an aliance that takes control of everything - World bank type domination, for the meantime. Eventually there will be an alliance the pulls out from under World bank and form alliances and we'll see a complete change in the entire global structure.

For now - the main three are going to stay the dominant 3 if for no other reason but because they have the population/land mass to pull it off.

China will 'squash' the US economically before too long. So, technically China will be the next superpower! Picture giant panda eating bald eagle for lunch.
Our 'global watchdog' may soon be the underdog!

I think that our relationship with China is symbiotic.

We don't like each other but we

need to cooperate in order to remain on "top"

Japan was a relatively small country that had some spunk, and a willingness to die for the country.

Seriously, they jury rigged things, and committed suicide just to go after pearl harbor. Deep in their hearts, they probably knew all that. They tried to frustrate the US move to japan, and had allies to do the rest. Did japan ever go after europe? Did they ever personally come to the lower 48, or alaska?

But china is FAR bigger now, has relatively the same technology, and they could come to the US if they wanted.

Of course, the US would spot them, demand to know what is going on, and send up fighters or missles to counter.

    WHO KNOWS about CHINA!?!!??

AMD exists as it does today because INTEL wanted to ABANDON the 286, which would hurt the company, and come out with the 386. AMD may not have had ANY intel compatible processors. With a few minor fixes, the 286 could have been BETTER than the 386. Well, INTEL helped OTHER companies fill demand for the 286 while they got the 386 up. They promised to let the others develop the processor, but tried to sue them out of existence. AMD survived and is a major competitor today.

TI needed to tool up 1Mb memory, and sold the earlier technology to south korea. SK built it up to what it is now.

CHINA obviously has a LOT of US technology to do what they are doing now, and the US is buying from them. We now have assembly lines that can be HIGHLY robotic, but it could take DECADES for all to use them. Right now, they are closet sized, and likely cost into the hundreds of thousands. Until we have fully tooled those, and fixed US taxes, china will continue.

China is making a big mistake pissing off American consumers right now. There is a very large and growing movement to stop buying anything and everything from China amongst consumers. If they lose the average American consumer.........they are losing their standing and dropping the dollar in the long run won't do much for them. If we were to revert to metal backed money and dropped the FED right now, opened a few plants to manufacture things that Americans no longer want to buy from China - they'd be toast.

Other than REMs, they need us more than we need them..........and we have our own sources of REMs right here in the states we can open back up (closed currently due to EPA crap). We also have a few overseas sources other than China now - which actually account for one war we're currently fighting. Afghanistan is a great source of REMs. If we ditch our dependence on their REMs, we have the upper hand.

Nobody will likely ever come after the US in a ground attack - it will be sky and out. Nobody in their right mind is going to attack a country on their own soil when half to most of its citizens have guns when that means up to around 200 mil guns on the ground to walk into. That would be pure lunacy.

Are there really any contenders for the "superpower" role other than the US? Some say China or perhaps Russia. But despite the recession, the US economy is nearly double that of China, its nearest competitor. And the US still receives far more immigrants each year (1 million) than any other country in the world. This kind of "soft power" is why most other countries turn to the US for global leadership.

It leads the world in high technology (Silicon Valley), finance and business (Wall Street), movies (Hollywood), and higher education (17 of the top 20 universities in the world). The US stock market is at an all time high and still reflects American leadership of the global economy. And for military might, it has the most powerful military in the world.

China suffers from massive official corruption, one party Communist rule, lack of creativity and grotesque social stratification. Its massive air, water and soil pollution problems kill 1.2 Chinese a year. It will likely be several decades before China even becomes a thoroughly modern country.

Consider Russia, which may have grabbed the headlines in recent months, it’s nowhere near being a super power. Russia has a trade profile of a Third World country, a GNP the size of Canada, no Silicon Valley, Hollywood, Wall Street or highly rated universities.

There is a lot of misconception in the West about what China may do which is just plain silly. The truth is China has been the largest economy in the world for nearly two thousand years without being very expansionist. In fact, it was ruled by foreign dynasties (Mongols and the Manchus) during the most expansionist periods in its history.

The problem is that many people in the West thinks China will act in exactly the same way as they would but that is just not true. Here is a good article on that.

Will the West ever understand China? - CNN.com

It is already an economic superpower in this part of the world. It has borders with 14 countries for which it needs a large army to defend. To look at its defense posture as completely against the US is just plain silly. It is the largest trading partner of most of these bordering countries and so is ever unlikely to go to war with them. It is definitely not going to go to war over some small islands. Nor is it going to go to war with Taiwan and that territory is being absorbed economically. Hong Kong is a very good example. They could have walked in anytime after the 50's if they wanted but they didn't.

You should also remember that the last war fought by China was with Vietnam in 1979. Just how many wars have the US fought then?

I think the next few decades will prove that not any one country will hold all the cards.

USA may still be a cultural soft power but it will definitely lose its economic power to China (as long as China can maintain a sustainable growth model and avoid failing like Japan).

Militarily, it seems as if the US is reducing spending and arms; whilst China is rapidly increasing. In the past few years, they've developed advancements with the aircraft carrier, stealth fighter/bombers/helicopters, and drones. Meanwhile, Russia is still a force to be reckoned with; but geographically restrained.

Even as China becomes THE economic superpower and a global military power, it will have to quell all of its domestic territorial and social issues before it can concentrate on influencing global policy. To date, China can only throw its economic weight globally and navy regionally in Southeast Asia. Korea, Japan, and Taiwan are still holding China at bay in East Asia.

Antartica and Arctic. As global warming continues and makes most of the planet uninhabitable, the worlds population will flee to these two "new" continents. And I'm pretty sure there will be a "cold war" between Antartica and Arctic too where Antartica launch their penguins towards Arctic and Arctic answer with a counter-attack with polar bears sailing on ice caps.
