What a tragedy...throwing out $1 million along with the old mattress. I will remember to ask my elderly mother what she has hidden in her old mattress BEFORE throwing it out.

When my spinster aunt got up in years, my mother would go to her apartment and take care of her. She gave mother power-of-attorney because she had no one else. When she passed away, we had to get all her belongings out.

We found money stashed every where. It was in books, clothes pockets, shoe boxes, wrapped in foil in the freezer, just to list a few. All in all, we found over $7000.00 .

Just goes to show, you never get rid of anything when it comes to the elderly.

There is a situation here, in Spain, where many traders have started to accept old peseta notes (porqué de la crisis). There are thousands of people who have accumulated enormous sums over their life times but have never declared the income so, were unable to safely change all their money into euros.

Older people are taking advantage to buy cars, expensive repairs to property, electrical goods and so on using money, which, when they actually received it, was worth far more than the exchange rate today so, even without paying income tax, they are still losing a lot of the real value.

You might not like what I say - but I believe it.

This is a true story. A bathroom cabinet in my father's appartment fell off the wall a few years ago. It revealed a crevice behind it. His servant then found a small bag in the crevice. As my father was nearly blind, he wasn't aware of what had happened.

In that bag, I found a little gold coin minted at the time of Queen Victoria. Immediately I became suspicious of the servant as I remember that a long time ago, my father put a little gold bar in there should a dire emergency arise.

But further in the bag, I found a pair of diamond earrings around 1.5cts each and a diamond of around 2 cts. I then asked my father about it and he just did not remember a thing. It was most likely that it was left to him by my grandmother and he forgot all about it!
