Hi all,

I am hoping one of you may have an answer to this weird problem.
Since I got my new computer my screen resolution for my monitor changes sometimes when I start it up.
It only seems to alternate between 2 settings but nothing I try fixes it. I have Google it to no avail.
I run Win 7 64 bit.
I don't know what other info you may need but please ask and I will happily share.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi laurence,

Looks like an issue with your monitor settings.

Windows change resolutions automatically sometimes to keep the aspect ratio.

If your monitor has an autoadjustment button try pressing it by setting the highest resolution.

If it doesn't work try reinstalling your video drivers. It can be an application in the background too that does this. Like 3rd party applications (games) have permission to change the screen reaolution.

Tough to tell if its an application, error and miscofiguratiom until checking out your PC physically. But you can try those steps.

    Good luck!

Definitely sounds like a monitor issue in my opinion. They should auto-adjust these days. You say it happens now and again so is intermittent. If you really want to confirm it beg, steal or borrow a friends one to use for a few days to confirm. However, if this is under warranty then should be easy to replace.

Worst case senario, monitors are only a couple of hundred bucks (or less) to buy new these days so not too bad if it came to that.

My six year old HP, I hardly ever turn the thing off. Just the monitor into standby.

After 6 years my computer cmos (watch type) battery has died so every time I turn it off and on completely (remove power) I have to re-do the date, time and year. Apart from that, works well.

      Best of luck.

Yep, my Laptop with W7, has occasionally done that, best to adjust your screen preferences to what you want.

Defrag, and run what you have, plus Malware Antispyware, (something like that) and whatever else you have got.

        Then restart!

I am pretty sure when l had this issue, the updates eventually fixed it!

And you can also try using the batteries on its own, it tends to help fix the issue!

I tried everything you guys suggested but nothing works. It automatically updates drivers and they are current. the fault is only intermittent so for now I think I may have to tolerate it. I don't really want to spend more money as these last couple of months have been slow for work and I spent money on the computer itself.

However, if it gets worse, maybe the monitor has had it. I have had the monitor for 7 years so perhaps it was as tired as the computer.

    Thanks for the tips.

Sounds like either a video card or motherboard (bios) issue.

Is the video card built into the motherboard? If you can't tell, post the make and model of either the computer itself, or the motherboard itself (if you know it).

It sounds like a graphics / video card problem, but I'd test on another monitor before delving into this.

If the monitor is old, maybe buy a new just for the fact that you perhaps need a newer one and you can potentially disspell the problem....
