To quote another WF member: "Wow. Just wow."

CINCINNATI (AP) -- An Ohio teacher has been fired following allegations that he told a black student who said he wanted to become president that the nation didn't need another black president. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports (Teacher accused of racial slur fired by Fairfield board ) the Fairfield Board of Education voted 4-0 on Thursday to fire science teacher Gil Voigt.

Well, I'm glad they took fast, decisive action instead of pussy footing around until media pressure got to them. What a demoralizing thing to say to a student who has dreams.

He later told Fairfield officials that what he said to the teen was, "I think we can't afford another president like Obama, whether he's black or white."
Looks like the usual modern day witch hunt.

Sure it is. He claims he was misquoted. The teen claims otherwise.

According to the AP, the referee also cited other incidents over the years in which he says Voigt made other racial or insulting remarks.

Fairfield Superintendent Paul Otten said in a statement, "The District felt that the evidence was sufficient to support the termination of Mr. Voigt's employment. The referee recommended such termination, and the board has concurred."

That quote is silly, If the guy has a history of being racial the school didn't care about any previous complaints until now.

Looks like a bogus complaint to me.

We don't need colors at all, we need people with ideas and vision and the ability to lead because of the value and utility of their ideas, not through the force of their ideology and political connections.

This is really a non-issue. If the guy said what he's accused of saying, then he should be fired. If he didn't, then he should keep his job. But none of us here know for sure. I love how people here automatically become psychics when they hear a story like this one.

I can't believe I'm about to say this..

      I agree with you.

Weren't there other people there? Weren't there witnesses? If it's just one word against another, I don't think the guy should lose his job. But I really understand the firing. The school really had no choice. The public pressure would have been tremendous.

I doubt that the school would fire him without due cause (and the board felt there was due cause) and I doubt that they would say that he'd made other slurs unless it were true. They looked at the accusations and then at his history there and that's the decision they came to.

Claude, even if you took his word and looked at the response he said he gave, it was totally innapropriate. The kid says he wanted to be President someday and this guys response is: "I don't think the nation can afford another president like Barack Obama, whether he's black or white."

Can you see that even that is not a proper thing for a teacher to say in that situation? If that was my kid I guarantee you I would be pissed at that response.

As the referee said though, that explanation doesn't sound credible and I agree. If he also had a history of saying other questionable things I can see why he was fired.

That is my opinion also. Both were really inappropriate responses to a student.

Why would you be pissed? Because he thought your kid might end up being the same as Obama?

I think you forgot the smiley after that second comment. I hope so anyways.

It should be obvious why I would be pissed to most people but I will explain it to you Gary. First of all he brings his politics into the classroom. That is totally innapropriate. Then, he brings race into the discussion when it wasn't there before. That is innapropriate and also the part that just isn't credible the way he explains it.

Oh, and also, he plainly is discouraging the kid.

That's my opinion also. It's bad enough when political wingnuts on WF make remarks like this, but when a teacher makes them in class, it's totally unacceptable.

As you can see, it doesn't matter what the guy said anyway, his politics are wrong so he's a racist.
