I occurred to me that at the time of the Renaissance in Europe, painting was actually cutting-edge technology and part of the process at looking at everything and finding different ways to examine the world. Artists and scientists tended to be one and the same. Nowadays, painters are like the Amish, clinging to old ways that once-upon-a-time were new ways.

I guess the equivalent of Renaissance-era artists nowadays would probably be animators with science degrees who find ways to utilize computers and animation to make new innovations and discoveries.
