RIP Rubin "Hurricane" Carter

I was never convinced he was totally innocent. He was an abusive thug and not the innocent angel of injustice he's been painted to be. Hollywood's beatification of him is puke-worthy. I really can't stand false martyrs, in particular one who would beat a harmless woman, Carolyn Kelley who helped him get out of jail but later said:
"If he could do that to me, a woman who was no threat to him, then he has erased in my mind any doubt that he could kill three or four innocent people,"

Why sure. Everyone who is guilty of assault is also undoubtedly guilty of killing three people ... oh, except the woman in the hospital who was shot and the third victim, said that NO, that was not the shooter and he wasn't there. Oh, and then there's all those pesky witnesses that place both of them at another bar during the crime.

Then there's the lack of fingerprints, gun power residue tests .. weren't done, no reliable witnesses putting them at the crime scene. The high probability of cops planting a live shotgun round and a live .32 round in his car (it wasn't collected as evidence until 5 days after the crime - how convenient that it showed up). You know, a bunch of small stuff like that.

Assault is a crime that incurs significantly less than 3 life sentences. In fact, in many domestic violence incidents, the perp is out in less than a month if he spends that much time.

Heck if I know if he did it, but his explosive unprovoked violence on innocent people sure plants the seeds of doubt. Even Ron Lipton, who visited Hurricane Carter with Muhammad Ali in jail (after convincing Ali to do so), expressed doubts:

If the story is about the assault is true, he should have done time for that. She never brought any formal charges, so he didn't. If they had hard evidence that he committed those murders, he would not have gotten off two times. It's very difficult to get charges overturned, even when there's DNA evidence that clearly shows they couldn't have been the perp.

Yeah, I still haven't actually seen the movie.
I should have known this crowd would know Bob Dylan better.

And yeah, he was certainly no saint.
A lot of ups-and-downs in his behavior and his life.
It is my understanding that he once joked about killing cops?

Regardless, he was proven innocent in the charges that he spent
19 years in prison for, and he was an advocate for other people who
have been wrongfully convicted, which is an important issue that
normally doesn't get much attention until someone like him is released,
or a few days before an execution.

33-year-old documents purporting that Carter failed a lie-detector test.

Perhaps more compelling are later letters from prosecutor Burrell Ives Humphreys, who offered to throw out the charges against Carter if he took and passed a second polygraph test. This occurred before Carter was retried in 1976. Humphreys said he would dismiss the murder charges against Carter if he was cleared in a lie-detector test administered by an independent expert.

Lie detectors aren't in the least bit compelling. They aren't even admissable in court. Wouldn't criminal cases be easy if all that was required to determine guilt or innocence was a lie detector test?
