BBC News - Did removing lead from petrol spark a decline in crime?

On COSMOS tonight, they talked about the history of lead, and how it affects the brain. I'm sure it has an effect, but no idea to what extent. I think it would be impossible to isolate one cause like that.

But the effects of lead poisoning are well documented.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

I thought that segment was very interesting. What that scientist went through and how long it took to figure out and then create a lead free environment was crazy.

I've heard this theory before, and it's definitely worth considering.

The natural, mineralised hot springs in Bath in the UK (which I have visited) were used as communal therapeutic ways of bathing by the Romans. The baths though were were lined with lead. They could not figure out why regular users got ill and died prematurely.

At least that's what I have been lead to believe. (yeah ok, I know it was bad)

Based on what I have heard, the removal or lead from gasoline may not have made that much of an impact. DURING that time, however, they have removed lead from paint, toys, etc.... And they found out about the damage from THOSE sources, which implies that the difference from the gas didn't have that much of an effect.

However THERE HAS long been a correlation between the kind of stupor created by such NON GAS exposure, and violence. ICSM!

As for things like lining bathes, it is said that some royalty, ironically, used lead oxide for cosmetics! Unfortunately, lead was found early, is reasonably malleable at a rather low temperature, is easy to find, and solidifies to be pretty solid. So it only makes sense that it was so widely used.

I'd be curious if Norway, Denmark and Sweden have observed any changes in population crime and disease rates since outlawing the use of mercury in dental fillings.

Lead was one of the reasons for the decline of the Roman empire. The rich had piped water...and the pipes were lead. The whole upper level of society went insane over it.

A lot of the severe crime we see, such as mass shooting almost always has a gunman that takes some form of psychotropic drug. Fluoride completely messes up a person's brain function. Lead could be just one of the many chemicals and minerals that are poisoning us out of our normal brain functions now. About 1/3 of the people in the US are raging 24/ 7 and another 1/3 are just this side of drooling. There's no question we're sucking down a few things that were just not meant to be in the human body.

Yeah, some retarded kids, maybe even some profoundly retarded ones, even TODAY may be that way because of lead. AND, as I said here several times before, we are now getting KIDS TOYS into the US from CHINA that are made of lead. I think that is illegal, but they just DON'T care if CHINA does it. Some kids DO "mouth" these. Of course, there is some solder, paint, etc...

Not to mention that they used it as a preservative in wine (and they generally drank quite a bit). Some forensic historians now say that's the reason Caligula went so far off the rails.

They're just power ruined. They've found out that they can do any damned thing they want, so they're taking it all. Don't need poison for that....just an addiction to money.
