Spam written in Swahili.

I was just looking down the topics in this part of the WF's basement and saw a number of spam threads.

They were all written in anything but English. My question is, seeing as the main language here is English, what is the point in posting spam that no one can read?

Secondly, seeing as it happens quite a lot, can one assume it works for the spammer otherwise they wouldn't do it?

Or is it one of these bottoms I keep hearing about?

I don't think they're bothered about anyone reading it, they just want the backlinks. Probably automated software.

The spammers have been hitting hard - and it seems to take longer to get the spam removed this week.

It takes longer to get rid of it because there is a lot more to get rid of and the same number of people trying to get rid of it.

We've been getting bombed by it the last 24 hours. I've been wondering if something was changed with the new ownership that is allowing it in easier or if maybe the publicity has attracted the pondscum.

Right? I've reported more spam today than I've ever seen in here before and can't report it all because they want one minute between posts. I wonder if whatever is going on is why the forum was down the first time I tried to get in today. Wonder if the main forum is getting hit, too. Think I'll go up and browse.

        Yeah, I saw this coming.
Perhaps I should have said something about it in the "psychic" thread,
then everyone would finally know my powers are real?

The extra surge of spam you're seeing now appears to be due to the previously working spam filters being somehow disconnected. I'm not sure what happened, but I suspect it has to do with changes to the structure as part of the sale. If so, it'll be temporary, and the minor inconvenience will be worth the upgrades.

I have ONE bit of advice I tried once on a site I had for a time, and it worked like a charm. I added a field to the URL, and checked for it in the program. If the field wasn't there, the data wasn't accepted.

It would be transparent to a human, but still work for most programs. Inputting data through the screen, for a computer is just IDIOTIC! I have only seen ONE program that did such a thing, and it was a FARSE! COMPLICATED, SLOW, ETC.... So MOST software does it via a standard get/post operation, and that means parsing the form, which is rarely done, outside of scraping for content of course, or just assuming.

ANOTHER thing that could be done is checking the title content and ensuring that it has say at least 3 latin characters that constitute at least 70% of the title. That usually wouldn't work, but today it would have cleared out nearly every piece of spam I have seen. AGAIN, it would be transparent to any legitimate visitor. I mean even the chinese guys on this system write their posts in English. and french, spanish, german, etc... use latin characters ALSO.

You are right Kurt. I'm not entirely certain about the Swahili either.

Nice to know that in the end they weren't humans after all, just bottoms and soon, when the new stuff gets done, all the bottoms will be blocked and the spam will be wiped up.

Uh, oh. Looks like they're back again.

A common theme seems to be the "member" claiming to be from a country that has no relationship to the language their "posts" are in.

The other night someone/something claiming to be from Australia was posting in Cyrillic (Russian). Tonight's mob are claiming to be from African nations (Malawi, Mali and Somalia so far), yet their "posts" are in Japanese (or maybe Korean?).

What they're trying to achieve is beyond my level of comprehension.

They're probably building tiered links to a third tier or something. Apparently it isn't too much of a worry that they send thousands and thousands of links to these sites because it's not their money sites so doesn't really matter if they end up getting penalised. I haven't clicked any of the links or anything in their posts to look but they're probably like third or second tier links.

Personally I find this kind of backlink building a waste of time, but maybe not for them. I'm no expert or anything but basically it's probably a software like GSA ranker or something where it'll go out and find site after site where it can go and register with fake profiles, fill in captures, confirm any confirmation emails then go and post or whatever. These software will automatically generate usernames, passwords, etc, and you fill in the fields with spun content for articles, comments, profiles etc and then blast away at all the different platforms available. It's probably mass posting through a VPS using proxies or something. It's not about the quality or relevancy, they just build as many links as possible.

Of course it might not be that at all.

Yeah, it's bots. WF has had numerous bot attacks of this proportion. Do you have a filter fix on the way? With the one minute delay before reporting, some of us who are reporting are spending a bit of time on this.

Sounds like a good idea. I've just checked in and the entire first page (with one exception) is full of this crap, either new topics or old threads bumped up.

The one exception, ironically, is this thread.

That was done away with quite a while ago.

There used to be a filter in place that blocked most of this stuff. As the infrastructure was being upgraded that filter somehow was broken. Hopefully it will be fixed soon, we're all getting tired of this.

Folks, you don't have to report the new spam threads with the strange looking characters in the title. They stick out like a sore thumb and will be deleted. The only exception to that would be if you see one slipping to the bottom of the page you might want to report it as it could have been overlooked.

        Suzanne,

There was a big backlog of it this morning. Doesn't take much overlap of sleep times for that to happen. And it's still coming in. A couple of us have been sitting on OT and deleting it as it pops up.

This stuff has been hammering at the gates every hour of every day for years. Scott had filters set up that blocked most of it, but they appear to have gotten borked with some of the changes that have been made.

This time around it happens to be OT. The sports spammers hit the PIPS section really hard for a while last year, the offline and mobile marketing sections have had their turns... Pretty much everywhere that gets much traffic has been hit in these odd "why there?" situations at some time or other.

I thought there might be a good filter on some of this. I used to report the fashion spammers constantly, but haven't seen much of that around until this round. Some of it doesn't look like fashion spamming to most, but there are some fashion words buried in some of that mess.

Haven't seen much of the sports spammers for awhile either. Ones I see nearly everyday is the live stream spammers now, along with the "regulars."

Well, after I saw the massive invasion of spambots, I felt a bit overwhelmed and it's a pretty day here so I went into town to get groceries and chicken feed.

I bought a milkshake and devoured that ... then a big strong coffee. Just got back, fortified with sugar and caffeine, ready to do battle once again, and

Appearances and urban legends to the contrary, yes. They do.

The typical North American sub-species is believed to require 1.5 to 3 hours of sleep daily, at least one hour of which must be in a contiguous block.
