How Target knows your daughter is pregnant before you do.

I have just finished the best book I have read this century! The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg is that good.

In this short video, Charles talks about how Target mines it's data and looks for patterns. Target can then send customized marketing to every person that does business with them.

Think you are getting the same mailings that Target sent to your neighbor??? I wouldn't bet on it.

At this point, the level that target analyzes data isn't a secret. The printing and packing systems that thy have are remarkable. One customer I worked at actualy had me create a job to create a file sent to a printer that controlled not only what it would print, and what would be said, but also the inserts. They must have either a printing setup, or a service, that can use that file and automate everything.

What makes this even more impressive is that I didn't even know I had a daughter.

I thought that is exactly what those customer "reward" cards were for. That's why I rarely have one.

Now that would be a reward for the wrong freaking customer.

I always assumed the cards were to track shopping habits. When it comes to shopping, I am completely predictable. I buy certain things at certain stores. I don't buy much, either - I am not a consumer minded person. I also use cash for anything that wouldn't be a "typical" buy, so there is no record of anything I buy other than my weekly groceries, etc. It's already a tad sick to me how much they can tell just from that.

Actually, a LONG time ago, DECADES ago, one bank, I believe it was citicorp, offered special POS systems to grocery stores that could track who was buying what. THEY tied it to the credit cards. SOMEONE HAS to have the FULL credit report, and THEY could aggregate all the data to a person.

On forensic files, I just watched an episode where they were LAUGHING! Apparently, the suspect almost got away with it but failed because on the CASH sale, she used a loyalty card. So what did she get for using it? $0.34, and a trip to prison!

I read this article a few months ago.
But thanks to TED Talks, I now feel like I knew it before the article came out.

Not only that. Target realized that I had a daughter before I did. Who's the mother and why didn't she tell me, Target?

Target or T.A.R.G.E.T stands for: "Total Antenatal Research Gestation Estimation Timer" It was an organization set up in the 80's and used to this day, by the influential child psychologist and actor, Demi Moore.

Sophisticated body scanning monitoring devices are placed either side of the entrance and exit doors called the "Baby On Board Detectors" It provided detailed stats on not only if a baby was present but also an estimate of how long till its birth and it's sex using a laser targeted "Gonad Detection Scanner"

Moore sold this data to other stores so they had a rough idea as to how many baby clothing and accessories they would need to stock per population area.

This made her very rich but she continued to make films as a hobby.

      It's all true!

I'm not surprised to find that habits, like most things in life, have structure and components that can be... "tweaked."
