Quick question on domain name refunds

I buy all my domains through the same well-known vendor. In one of my flashes of brilliance, I bought a domain name last Friday morning. In the cold light of Saturday morning, it seemed like a questionable move.

I sent in a refund request. They confirmed the request with the usual automated response, saying someone would contact me within 24 hours.

Technically, they can deny the request. It's a courtesy. If it's within 72 hours, it's usually granted.

I probably thought this would be no problem. I spend a lot there, and the request was made within 24 hours of purchase. But I didn't think about it until yesterday. I realized they never responded.

I checked the ticket number online, and it was not there.

Last night, I got on the 'ol chat service and asked the status. Longer than usual delay. I believe they realized they lost it, or forgot about it. They finally respond that it will be "processed" soon.

3 hours ago I got an email. Denied. They said "We have contacted Verisign registry to request cancellation of your domain name but unfortunately the registry refused to revoke the domain name and refund the payment."

It's only 10 bucks or whatever. My question: in your view is that a legitimate story on their part (Verisign), or as I believe, does it look like I got overlooked in the system, and they are using Verisign as an excuse?

I think you're being picky. I think the Verisign excuse was valid as enough time had passed that payment/registration had been processed.

Did it fall through the cracks? Maybe. Perhaps a cancellation takes human intervention and they don't run full staff over the weekends.

24 hrs elapsed before you requested cancellation. That was on Saturday and when you did not get a reply by Monday am (72 hrs), you should have called then. You didn't call until Wednesday night.

If it were me, the only person I'd be mad at is myself.

Sounds like a Godaddy refund. They refund if requested within 3 days usually. The best way to do that though is on the phone. They do it while you're on the phone. I wouldn't trust the email way.

I've found whether offline or online - if you approach in a friendly, non-angry manner....you often get what you want. Good for you!
