Just got a Chromebook

Hey guys,


Anyone else using a Chromebook? Any suggestions on the best apps to replace the traditional paid softwares like Photoshop/Adobe/Camtasia?

I'm going to try using this as my full-time laptop. Maybe just because it is new...

    Oh wow! lucky you!

    I have been planning on possibly replacing my Windows XP (useless) laptop with a Chrome book - one thing I am not clear on is do you pay any kind of a fee to Google like you would an Internet Service Provider? (since I have heard you don't need one with ChromeBook?).

    I understand you get some free cloud storage but I am talking for the Internet connection.

      Last I heard, the chromebook was basically like an ANDROID PHONE in a laptop form factor, and even the PHONE capability is often removed. If the phone capability is there, they are often sold with a phone service for them. Otherwise, it is WIFI. BTW they ALSO mostly use slower ARM processors.

      XP is FAR more functional!

      GOOGLE makes their money by encouraging you to use GMAIL, and CHROME, and monetizing that, and they likely have various charges on developing and using ANDROID. They also probably charge the manufacturers. M/S often charges in excess of $40 per unit. If Google made $1 per, it is a LOT, and nobody would notice.

        Been using the Chromebook for a few months now and so far so good. There are a lot of things that can be done without the use of Windows/Mac. The only frustrating thing is there is not much internal storage. Sometimes you don't want to have to keep uploading things to the cloud, pulling from that cloud to upload with only 16GB it fills up fast and you notice some significant lag when it is full...

        One thing I do like though is the cost effectiveness. There are just so many apps that replace all the paid software that you need(like photoshop and camtasia).

        Anyway, just thought I'd update this thread. The Chromebook has been great, but I have purchased a standard Windows laptop now. The Chromebook is now left for browsing purposes only But the extra 1TB of Google Drive storage is great!

      Sorry just to add to that... The internet connection issue, well... Wi-Fi is everywhere nowadays. Hotspotting from your phone ain't too bad either. I don't see anyone whipping out a laptop to sit down and work without an internet connection. It is true that you can't open any files without an internet connection which can be frustrating, but then again, that's the trade off for a Chromebook. Let me know if you end up buying a Chromebook to try it out for yourself.

    I have had a Chromebook for a while now. I too just have the WiFi version. I considered adding in the card to add it onto my phone plan, but opted out because I didn't want to pay the extra cost until I had played with it for a while.

    I have found tools to do most things I want, but two things that I have been disappointed with is that there is not a way to use Skype with it (No Chrome version) and I haven't found a good recording software.

    If you plan ahead, you can use documents offline. I was just in a remote area a week or so ago and I was able to do some work on an e-book that I have been working on. I wasn't doing anything major, just wanted to get some thoughts down. I was able to type it up and it automatically synced with my Google Drive when I was back home with WiFi. If you want to work on an existing document offline, you just need to plan ahead and make sure it is available for offline mode.
