The same reason people still use AOL, it's a habit.

HUH!?!?!?!? Windows XP was still considered a viable platform until a couple weeks ago.
A LOT of software will NOT work on ANY later version of windows. I was once at a customer that was back two MAJOR releases! MAJOR being as a standard that would count 7, 8 and 8.1 as MINOR releases! They were using 3.1 at a time when most were using 2000. To show you JUST how extreme a difference that is, 98 was the LAST version of windows microsoft ever REALLY made! OK, for SOME reason, they DID create ME to try to appease some. ME was made and released AFTER 2000, but was an older product.

What we call windows today is NOT windows, but Windows NT. It is kind of a cousin to windows. And 2000 was the first wide normal consumer release of Windows NT. I say that because Windows NT 3.1 came out in 1993, before even Windows 3.11, but NT was more expensive and for larger companies to try to combat some server OS systems put out by other companies.

Anyway, some functionality was in XP that MS decided to abandon, and it also has drivers for things that are now considered obsolete.

The latest supported IE browser version, for XP, is IE8!

I work on some software many companies RUN ON! The supplier told them "UPDATE NOW!!!!!!! The entire major version that we supported has reached it's end of life!" FEW listened! They were given a reprieve and told it was for a YEAR! FEW listened! They were given ANOTHER reprieve for like 6months! FEW listened! MONTHS later, we start getting a lot of calls. One upgraded a version that was perhaps ~9 YEARS old! GRANTED, it is expensive, and takes a while, but it is software they RUN ON! If it fails, and they can't get support, what do they do?

Anyway, late upgrades are NOTHING NEW!

Many bank ATMS and other huge systems (and countries use XP - They are going to get special updates regardless of how Microsoft treats the 'little people' who may not be able to afford new hardware necessary to upgrade Windows - or for that matter even just for the software upgrade the cost is exorbitant.
