So, I'm Not The Only Person Who Doesn't Drive

I never used my drivers license. Some people shouldn't drive -- I am one of them. I get caught up in thoughts. Better to get caught up in thoughts than caught up in a fatal accident. However, not driving does often make me feel a bit alienated. But, here's a list that shows I'm not the only person who doesn't drive:

I cannot imagine not driving. When I don't have my car I always end up needing to do something.

That would be the case with most people. It does kind of limit my options, but presents new ones I guess.

TB, I must drive my car!

Hubby is a drag racer, remember? Well, when I let him drive my car and he made the rev limiter initiate, I actually yelled at him because I thought he was tearing my car up. He laughed at me and told me that what I heard was the rev limiter and it prevented him from tearing it up.

I don't allow him to drive my car anyway. And you guys that know about such things, please don't tell me that there is no such thing as a rev limiter, lol!

I never learned to drive in the UK, distances shorter, plenty of buses, cheap taxi's and trains. Test is a lot more difficult there. Written and up to 50 minutes driving test. Roads are narrow and crowded too.

In Texas I had to learn. Roads a lot wider, distances huge. Multiple choice on-screen equivalent to a written test and ten minutes in the car was my test here. Far too easy but 10 years later I have acquired a reasonable amount of skill and confidence by just doing it! One thing though, only ever driven an automatic.

You get a blanket license here which ever type you drive but in the UK you get one to drive a stick shift and automatic or one to drive an automatic. If you only have the automatic licience You would have to take another test if you wanted to drive a car with manual gears!

Wow, I can't imagine not driving, we can't walk to the stores here and the buses are a bit scarce.

The good thing you have done is making the decision not to drive if you know you shouldn't. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people behind the wheel that haven't figured that out.

I've got a rev limiter on my bike Terra.
I didn't know they also put them in cars but then my car is 29 years old

            Thanks Thom,

Mine is a sports car, so maybe they still put them in those just in case some dude with a need for speed beyond speed limits decides to pretend he's at the track, like the dude I married, lol!

I know they put governors on cars to limit the speed.
Technically speaking a governor is used to limit speed and a rev limiter is used to set a top rpm limit to protect the motor and can also be used as a shift point.
If your car came from the factory like that, it's most likely has a governor. I know some of the foreign cars like BMW and Audi use them.

Does a governor make a loud grinding noise when you're shifting while going to fast? That's what he did with mine, lol!

He said it was a rev limiter but what the heck do I know about such things, haha!

When you hit the rev limit it sounds like it's not getting enough gas.

That's it! That fast ba-ba-ba-ba loud noise, like the engine is dropping sparks or something.

                    Thanks again, Thom.

It's a tough sound to describe, really.
From what you have told me about your husband, I would believe what he says when it comes to cars and motors.

I have to drive. I drive on roads that are not more than paths - places the devil himself wouldn't drive. If I were stuck without a car, my life would just collapse. I love to go, and the rocks I get are kinda necessary for the business end of my hobby cravings.

I will say, though, that we've got people so brain-dead drugged on the roads out here that they shouldn't even be allowed off of sidewalks on their own let alone given cars to drive.

When I went to Germany I had to take a test there for my license. 500 questions as opposed to 10 here - and they weren't lame stuff like about trailer hitches like we have here. They made sure you knew something about driving.

For health reasons I had to stop driving 9 years ago. I actually still technically am allowed to drive despite being blind in 1 eye but I did not feel safe so I surrendered my licence so I don't incur extra costs to keep it. If I kept it I needed an eye test each year (around $100) so not worth it. You do get used to not having a car. I have a half price taxi card so that helps heaps.

Well, if I didn't drive, I'd spend the rest of my life at the end of a rural gravel drive. Forget groceries and other necessities. I don't think I'm willing to live that much off grid.

Yeah, I once lived in Reston, VA for about 16 years. They have incredible bus service. I commuted to DC every day and got around town with no problems. Really didn't need a car there for every day stuff. Going out of town to visit relatives and going on vacation ... different story though.

Yep, l drive and start to think of other stuff, but my subconsciousness takes over!

Or if your mind takes over, just remember that you could damage your car or other people or worse, so you have to force yourself to concentrate, although as said before, if you are a pro at driving, then some automatic piloting should take over!

I only drive when I don't have any place to go.
It's the Black Pearl, speeding through empty Texas roads.

    In town (Houston) I only use Jonathon's (car/limo service)... I can't stand
driving in this traffic, or downtown with all the one-way streets!!!
