Seriously? No 'Quick Reply' and a recaptcha thing

So I've failed the captcha thing twice in trying to get this posted.

Maybe it's just me that's seeing this?

I'd determined to keep an open mind about the changes and everything, but my mind is clouding up about as bad as the capthdcha image...

It's a hard captcha - hard to tell how many of the numbers are supposed to be used - spaces, etc.

Seems to be throughout the WF now so hoping it's temporary to stop the spam bots until filters can be applied.

I wondered if there's a way to apply the captcha only to new members or to those with less than 20 posts, etc. Probably not.

Sure is a pain in the butt. If they were to apply a filter, it would surely need to be more than just 20 posts. Let's just hope they can get everything situated where it can be just dropped completely.

That recapcha is tricky, having to combine numbers in two different images.

People will do it once or twice and then posts will decline.

I said "20 posts" because the wave of spam earlier was all new bot traffic and those with 0-3 posts.

Maybe they need to cap it for a while until they get a handle on it - I know the search (past posts, etc) still isn't working and doesn't seem to be rebuilding so I'm sure the new owners have some glitches to work on.

Whats the point of captcha's anymore any way ?

The bots use API's to send the image to a human who decodes
it and sends it back to the bot who can then post.

An entire industry has been built on the premise.

IMO the captcha is just going to piss of the regulars.

A thought - tie it to the sig deal ... what is it 50 posts before
you can add a sig? well use that plug in to also allow
anyone with MORE then 50 posts to NOT see captcha.

Just a thought on the matter.

              Here is another one.
Add a HIDDEN forum. the bots will parse the
html and enter the forum. when that happens Auto ban them
and delete any posts that it might have made.

Trust me ... it works really, really well.

Maybe they could graduate the Captcha based upon how long somebody

                If you're serious...
Probably not. In home vacuum cleaners sales organizations have a habit of exaggerating their sales results.

I wasn't selling Kirby's at the time, but I have two streets in my area where every home on both streets bought. If they said it was a Kirby guy, then it wasn't me.

For the last 12 years (except this year) I was a paid speaker at the national Vacuum Dealer Trade Association convention. And about 8 years ago, I was the Keynote speaker.

I haven't sold in people's homes for maybe ten years. But at the conventions, I still hear "That's him..that's the guy".

I'm in the early stages of writing a book titled Door To Door. For 30 years, I had quite an adventure.

Now, I own a retail store that sells several brands. But when selling in people's homes, it was (roughly) Kirby...1 year. Tri-Star....30 years. Rainbow..2 years. Thermax (Like a Rainbow) for 5 years. (Ohio State Distributor.)

I took a sampling of my sales figures, and estimated (plus or minus 1%) that I sold 7,231 vacuum cleaners in people's homes. I'm doing that from memory, but I know it was more than 7,200.

Every once in a while, I get a twitch to go back into selling in people's homes. But I don't really need to money, or the experience of carrying 50 pounds of boxes. But it might be fun for a week.

                  That is impressive.

If i did the quickie math right that's an average 1.5 sales a day.

I think the ONLY "good" they see is by, IF THEY DO IT RIGHT(and they really DON'T), giving their links more weight for a given set of keywords.

Their problem is that they lost fact of WHY they wanted to post it here, and are doing STUPID things to try to evade heuristic traps.

ALL computers have ONE thing in common! They are IDIOTS! Simply create a backend process with a needed parameter, and the spam could drop to ZERO and we wouldn't even have to know it is there. The spammers may NEVER catch on. YEAH, itmight be easy to defeat, but the point is they may NEVER catch on. Even restricting referrers on the accepting page could cause spam to disappear.

So far, I have had two captchas. BOTH were reasonably stable, no noise, all numeric captchas. That will defeat almost any robot out there. SOME are HIGH NOISE, unstable, and all symbolic, and most people SHOULD have problems doing them. If a value could be v, V,w, W, I, l,1, t, T, x, or X, WHAT are the chances that you will type in the right value? And YES, it can be that hard, assuming you even see the character. Case can be hard enough to determine, especially if the font size changes all over. I,l,and 1, are often hard to discern. If they have a line going through them, they can look like X,x,T or t! If two "1" tilt to either side, they could look like a V. If THEY are then next to a V, they can look like a w.

SO FAR, HERE,for me, such a choice was limited to 1, and thus FAR EASIER! I STILL hate them though!

It is OFF at the moment.

The problem with captchas is there's a number of programs and services that will enter them for the spammers.

Also, when you send a verification email there are programs that will automatically click the confirmation link in these emails.

IMO, it would be a good idea to have a confirmation link in the email and when clicked on, the person is taken to a page that has another captcha. At this time, I don't know of any automation tool that would be set up to handle this. They may develope something in the future, but this system would be unique to the WF, at least for a while.

It does create an extra hurdle for new members, but I believe the ability to reduce spam would be a positive tradeoff.

Maybe it was an experiment, but everything is back to 'normal' including the spambots.
