How safe is your identity?

I'm curious in finding out peoples perception of how safe their identity is, and - has yours ever been stolen?

Or, do you know anyone who has had theirs stolen? My brothers was at a restaurant. Turned out it was the GM - he was caught after several customers complained.

Here's a poll question I ask on my website:

How safe is your identity?

100% Safe - Can't be stolen
75% Safe - but low risk
50% Safe - unsure, could go either way
25% Safe - High Risk
0% Safe - it's not IF but When

So what do you think?

Take my identity? You'd have to be a criminal genius.

My password is unbreakable. Nobody could ever guess it unless I just tell you. It's my name, and I'm not about to tell anyone what that is.

And the big trick is, that it starts with a capitol letter. And I'm not going to tell you what those letters are.

I can't find anyone who WANTS my identity. Being an opinionated bitch really does have it's advantages.

Sal; I never called you "opinionated".
(Is she laughing, guys? Please tell me she's laughing.)

I want my identity to be stolen!
I'm tired of getting all the collection letters and threatening phone calls. It's about time someone else shared in that experience. If they steal my identity, that means they have to pay my bills.

Let the FBI knock on your door in the middle of the night! Let the IRS garnish your wages for back taxes! Now that there are two of us, the other guy can pay half my mortgage.

If you had my identity, your life would be a living hell. Stealing my identity puts a target on your back, puts the Feds on your trail, and two Ex-wives after anything you own.

      Welcome to the jungle.

      My defense is bulletproof.

Seriously, my identity would not be that easy to *****LEGITIMATELY***** steal! I lie about my age to websites. Most people don't know my birthday. It isn't openly published, and I don't celebrate it. My name could easily be misspelled, and few know my whole name. VERY few know where I was born and NOW would likely guess even the wrong STATE. HECK, a few guessed the wrong COUNTRY! I SHRED almost EVERYTHING that could identify me.

Sounds pretty secure, huh? BUT..... The hospitals advertise my birthdate and at least part of my name. They DEMAND that I orally tell them my birthdate(I whisper). NOW, they demand that the IRS publicize this information and give it to armies of people, some of whom are KNOWN FELONS, on the RIDICULOUS assertion that, after paying over a billion dollars for an internet site and BILLIONS on education, etc...., that citizens can't understand things and must have armies of "navigators" ready to help them!

OH, and let's not forget the corporations that collect this information THAT, in violation of fiduciary duty that is at least CENTURIES old, and laws that are DECADES old, they DON'T take care of.

HECK, the government created rules mandating companies to steal from me, play keepaway, and then give it to state coffers. The STATE then REPEATS the process. OH, if I am willing to risk my ID, and wait months, they will pay me back some of the money, but it just doesn't seem worth risking my life to get a mere tens of thousands.

It was bad enough to do that AGAIN when I had to get a passport, and misplaced my old expired one.

I had my identity stolen or perhaps a better way to put it is to say my former (large) bank gave it away along with giving away many thousands of dollars of my money to thieves. I was a HUGE hassle. Eventually the police caught the person and than promptly let him go. This was a few years ago. I expect that the loser has been thrown in prison by now for other stuff he was going.
Don't just guard your identity but guide your money! My fitness center has much tighter security than a lot of banks.

If you've ever attended school, bought insurance, had a job, applied for a job, had medical work done, used a credit card at Target (and a slew of other places see https://www.privacyrights.org/ ), made a purchase online, filed your taxes online, used a credit card at a restaurant, etc., etc., etc. - your identity is at risk. It seems to me. Our information is out there. Just too many places.

People have also had crimes committed in their names, had warrants issued and put in jail until they could prove it wasn't them. They've had people get jobs in their name, have medical care in their name with different blood types being put in their record.

Congress authorized the payment of social security benefits to illegal immigrants in 2006 - even if they were using a stolen identity ... it's scary.

One customer I had KNOWS that people have stolen SSNs, etc... This is impossible, since there is SO much geared to it. THEIR solution? They paid people a LOT of money to do things like create compound keys to get things to appear to work, and things that SHOULD be automaticare now highly manual. BTW that is ANOTHER thing increasing the cost , and lowering the quality, of healthcare!

Oh yeah, the security of credit cards was bad, but it is actually WORSE now! They don't even care about SSL. I once found out that a store, that apparently sold a lot of books online, actually did something that some commercial software ENCOURAGED! The visitors ordered through SSL, giving them a false sense of security, and the store got EMAILS with the credit card numbers and processed them manually.

https is one of the most secure common protocols. Email is BY FAR THE LEAST secure! To say it is insecure is actually an understatement.

And credit card companies send out a TON of things that could jeopardize your CC security. My FAVORITE is the checks allowing you to charge ******AT ZERO PERCENT FOR X MONTHS******(at a cost of Y% upfront and the rate skyrockets to a usarus default rate if you are late on even one payment).

Ha! Nobody could steal my identity if it included voice regognition as my voice is too unique.

About 10 years ago when I was in the medical field, some bimbo thought she would try to call in prescriptions using my name. She called several pharmacies with a prescription for class 3 pain killers from several doctors I worked for in different names of people in her family. Turns out, the pharmacists knew it wasn't me because of the voice and called the police. (She worked in the medical building I managed) and they arrested her and carted her off in cuffs!

          What a dumb broad! Haha!
