Surreal Swiss artist H.R. Giger has passed away aged 74 as a result of injuries sustained from a fall.

Old fart prog-rock fans will be aware of Giger's artwork on Emerson, Lake and Palmer's seminal Brain Salad Surgery album. He also designed covers for a variety of metal bands as well as Blondie lead singer Deborah Harry's solo album.

Sc-fi movie fans will also be aware of him from his design of the "creature" in the Alien movies, as well as the one in Species.

RIP.

I didn't realize he had done those Debbie Harry covers.

His designs for the xenomorphs from the Alien franchise were groundbreaking stuff. He's probably the only person to have inspired more movie-based nightmares than whoever came up with the flying monkeys in "The Wizard of Oz."

His death is a real loss.

He's one of the few artists whose work is instantly recognisable. Being familiar with Brain Salad Surgery when I first saw Alien, my immediate thought was "that looks like something by that guy who designed that album". And it was.

Since then I've picked him out everywhere, except for the Deborah Harry album. That surprised me as well.

I never heard of him before this thread, but from the info you've given - I've seen a lot of his work before and am extremely impressed with him. I bet he was a fun person to know. We are lessened for his passing.
