When Was The Last Time You Checked Your Spending Habits?

It's been awhile since I actually sat down and took a good look at our finances, which is odd for me, especially being so obsessed with numbers. I just couldn't understand why our money wasn't stretching further, so I pulled out an old fashioned pen and paper, drew a line down the middle, on one side put "outgoing" and on the other "incoming".

After crunching those numbers I realized that something was off kilter. So my next step was to check bank accounts and I started seeing some interesting patterns from both my wife and I.

I came to a few simple conclusions. First of all, we're wasting too much on unnecessary expenses, mostly eating out. Some of it's justifiable, as we don't spend a lot on entertainment, but it's still too much.

I also came to the conclusion that I need to start setting work goals/sales goals again. I'm not living up to my abilities. I'm much more productive when I have written daily, weekly and monthly goals in front of me. I lack a sense of urgency without them. I also need to start using my kitchen timer in order to dictate when I can take breaks.

Bottom line: if I simply stick to even the very basic minimum goals and we create and stick to a manageable budget that includes making weekly menus for meals, we could completely change our financial situation over the next few months.

I'm looking at it all written out neatly on paper next to me and it makes perfect sense, our bills will get paid, we can put money in savings, we can pay off/pay down some nagging debts, have cash on hand to pay for my wife's medical treatments, if needed, have a weekly allowance, eat great food at home and STILL go out once per week!

I'm actually excited to get started on Monday!

If you haven't sat down and taken the time to go over your finances recently I highly recommend you do. You may be shocked by what you see going out every month. Even if you can afford it, it's good to take inventory of your finances from time to time.

I still use pen and paper to visually track my monthly expenses (only on the business side - my wife handles house stuff). Even though I use Quickbooks, and pay ALMOST everything on line, having that visual is an effective way for me to see what's going on at a glance.

Like you, we also spend too much on eating out. Between eating out with the family and my business meals, I think we were over $6000 last year JUST in eating out expenses... (bigger percentage was business though). As a consultant, I do a LOT of eating out with clients.

She doesn't want any part of the business which, honestly, concerns me, so I do everything except groceries/household items, though I'm about to start taking at least a small part in it. This is an area where we've struggled because she wants control, but doesn't spend it wisely. That's one of the reasons why we go out to eat so much. In her defense, it has been difficult to an extent because we're both trying to change some of our eating habits.

Shopping used to be pretty simple. Buy stuff for 7 dinners every week, grab some bacon, sausage, eggs, cereal, pancake mix, syrup, etc for breakfast and grab bologna, ham, Spam, PB & J, bread, milk and you've pretty much got it covered.

Reality check: people my age are having heart attacks left and right these days so although we don't intend to give up everything we enjoy, we do have to start including some healthier choices that both of us will eat. THAT has been a big problem, the meeting of the minds, but we're working on it.

We didn't spend quite that much, but it was still too much. I can see how it can get expensive being a part of your business. At least you can write that off on your taxes, right?

Considering my wife works full time it works out best for both of us that I keep the business books and she keeps the house books. But since my overhead is low and I have no employees, my books are actually very simple to keep. She knows where my records are and I know where she keeps the house stuff. And once every few months we sit and go over financials.

We spent too many years on the brink of bankruptcy and have no desire to return there

Seem we like a lot of the same foods

We try to shop well but usually fail miserably. In our house, my wife and son have very small food options as they are both very picky eaters, where my step daughter and I like many different foods. There are so few meal that all of us like...

Yeah, started the healthy thing about 4 years ago. My wife used to complain the cost of some of the foods I like are high, but then I reminded her that much of the crap food I used to eat I no longer do. It all comes out in the wash...

Yep. Write offs are our friends

I watch my money like a hawk. I don't have enough to not keep good track of it.

Since I've stopped eating anything that's not GMO my food spending is way up, but the portion spent on eating out has dropped drastically so it's almost evening out a little. I'm not as much of a consumer as some people are and don't give one rip about status quos, so a lot of that chintz and bling money that a lot of people spend isn't a problem, either.

I'm luck in a way, my wife works in the bankruptcy field and helps people get back on track with there finances so as a result she watches our accounts like a hawk daily, this led to her discovering that one of our credit cards had be hacked and someone was using it, she was able to catch it and contact the bank who put a freeze on the card right away.
