"We had a really, really good open public debate about this issue in Tallahassee," he said. "Nobody got their pants in a wad about it."
That's the big problem with freedom of speech - when people start deciding who can be "free" and who can't.

What a ridiculous controversy...on both sides.

WOW TL! You should complain to "raw story". I checked out their MORONIC summary of the "white privilege" piece. Should a minority read that, I could understand their blood boiling. Since I saw the actual video before, I wanted to see how they had changed it! They DIDN'T!!!!!!!!

OK, here is a QUOTE from what is WRITTEN in the ACTUAL video, which is what is said in that video....

"The plain fact is that what they understand to be'privilege' is
really just what regular people understand is a 'consequence'. It is a
consequence of hard work of delaying gratification and of sacrifice.
    It is not a function of skin tone or the number of vowels in your name;
it is a function of character."
That is the tone of the whole video.

Seriously, you have to start quoting better sources.

But yeah, if 2016 doesn't come fast enough, and things pick up anymore, there may be the start of another civil war. I guess, considering that so much of the youth of today doesn't have any idea of current events, or even of tape recorders, they may simply follow, but if they find out the truth..... I spoke earlier of gaslighting. Ever see that 1944 flick? one guy ends up getting involved, and everything falls apart. The guy that wanted to be rich found the jewels, and he ended up in jail while the woman that he tried to mislead ended up getting his spoils!

There is a movement to DRAFT Ben Carson for president. He seems like a nice person and all. I LIKE him! His story IS the American dream. But I don't know if YKW and what many that voted for him have said have hurt BCs chances. I bet HE could have been a good president. SMART, DECENT, a RESPECTED DOCTOR, etc.... And it is ironic, given what many claimed and hoped would happen, if YKW got elected. It is ANYTHING BUT!

I like him. He's honest, has common sense, and logic.
I don't agree with him on everything naturally.
For example he's against gay marriage and I don't care who anyone marries as long as they're happy together. But other then that I think he could make a good president who would work with congress.
As he said, the only reason the bald eagle can soar is because it has a left wing and a right wing.

Yeah, he's been pretty visible the past couple of years...and I can tell you my inbox has been getting hit with draft BC for president emails for several months now. His message and background hit the mark for many folks --> but only time will tell what his fate will be.

I like him, too. I don't think there's anyone I agree with 100% - but at least this guy is honest and has integrity. I'd vote for him in a heartbeat - especially against some of those damned elitist yahoos they keep installing on top of us.

Well, when Obama was elected the second time, there were a lot of petitions to allow some states like Texas, Ms, Al, etc to secede. They got a fair amount of signers, but not as many signers as the petitions from others to allow them to secede. There were so many for those petitions, that they required a response from the President. I guess he said no. lol.

Those of us who live in upstate New York have been trying to get New York City to secede (or at least give it to New Jersey) for years.

There comes a time when it is NOT so simple. Don't say it can't happen. Successions from states have happened a few times, and successions from the country have also. Of course THEN it was merely to enslave others. The next time it will likely be for freedom.

I like Ben Carson. He's accomplished and intelligent and practical and knows it takes both sides to get where we want to go. He's a good man.

Just in the past week Carson has indicated he is considering a run for President. I would back him 100%.

He's been hinting at it for the past year or more. I've seen several of his interviews over the past year where he has indicated he may be open to the possibility. He was on the tube quite a bit even before he signed his deal with FNC back in October.

They all like that Federal money, though. I don't see any of those goobers giving that back. If I'm not mistaken all of the states that would like to secede are "takers." If you look at their statistics they are all at the bottom of the heap in things that you want to be high on the list in. The only thing they rank number one in is obesity. lol

What a load of GARBAGE! It talks about DC having such a high GDP, but almost all of that is POLITICS and TAXES! In real terms, that is like ZERO!!!!!!! HECK, they list it as a state. IT IS NOT A STATE!!!!!! It says California doesn't need help from the federal government, though they are in SEVERE trouble! It says Texas needs a lot of help, though they are doing fine.

HECK, I still remember all the whiplash from enron in California. You have to wonder why they did what they did. And they were talking about the raising of taxes, etc... People have been LEAVING. So if the bad stuff I have heard is not true, the country is all the worse. Meanwhile, some places are cutting back on taxes, etc.... and are doing fine.

Am I to believe consistent stuff I have heard for years from several places, or one thing from a company in DC that thinks DC is a state and claims DC is the leader and started in 2012?

Why not....let's lay a few more statistics out on the table. Obviously many giant blue stronghold states have a lot more trouble than say a state like Texas does. Heck, I'm almost a Rick Perry fan. And check it out...even the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics classifies the District of Columbia as a state for inclusion in the statistical ranks.

    @ Steve

I am sure you know the basics.

Believe what you think to be true after evaluating as many facts and other relevant input that you can. Try to disregard all or as much pure opinion as possible.

I'm a stats guy...if you ask me California faces some serious difficulties and I am California born. I've lived in Roseville, Sacramento, Vallejo (Napa Valley area -- Vallejo is a complete financial wreck these days), Los Angeles, San Diego & Chula Vista which just a mile or two from the Tijuana border.

The problem with stats is that people spin them just like they spin everything else. I suggest look at all of the raw and trending data that you can and then come to your own conclusions.

    Cheers

But this isn't about the states that have the most dependency on federal funds or the highest poverty rate. It's about the states that petitioned to secede after the last presidential election, and I say, don't let the door hit ya.

OK. I'm done. lol I was in a very rambunctious and confrontational mood, yesterday. It happens. A lack of medication, but it beats the alternative.

I do realize that my hyperbolic statements, seasoned with a dash of what I regard as sardonic wit, generally go over like a lead balloon, but I think most here know that I don't have a mean spirited bone in my body. Actually, if I had to be defined in a single word, it could only be, 'cherubic.'

That said, please keep up the good work in my stead.

OK, S&P is one of the leading credit worthiness firms. They rank STATES, for bonds! If theyare caught lying, they WILL be sued!!!! They are in court saying these values are too favorable, and they are being extorted by the federal government, but..... Here is the RAW data, and a number of the best and worst!

Illinois is the WORST and is in danger of getting a lower letter grade!!!!!!!!!

California is the SECOND worst. It is now considered stable but if it goes down, it will be where illinois is.

The fourth worst, new jersey, is run by a guy that is rumored to switch parties, and is a turncoat.
    The fifth worst is kentucky

Indiana is COMFORTABLY in the BEST column!
Texas is ALSO on the best list. I took AA+ to be the start of the best. California is only an A.

The R or D refers to the color of that state.

Nice post, Steve. Not only have I lived in a bunch of California cities I just spent almost 20 years in the electronics/appliance business in Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington/Normal & Rockford, Illinois. I opened the first Dishnetwork sales and service center in the Rockford area back in 1996.

I can tell you Rockford had some of the worst violent crime and unemployment rates in the nation year after year after year. I have also lived in North Chicago and Waukeegan back in the early/mid 80's and those cities were not much to brag about either! Springfield and Bloomington/Normal were pretty nice cities but the rest of those locales had seen better days.

I am in Iowa now that's were my wife and I went to high school way back in the day. This state is in good shape financially but it has been shifting from red to blue for a number of years. After 30 years away from here it's sure seems a lot different!

      Cheers

Wait... Other advertisers threatened to take their business elsewhere if the sign weren't removed. It wasn't threats from some governmental agency or civic group. And there was neither violence nor the threat of it involved.

How is that like Stalinist Russia, exactly?
