I aawkened this morning and ALL 3 of my mice wouldn't work, 2 corded, 1 wireless. This has been going on for 2 weeks. They are all frozen, yes, new batteries, they are going all over the screen with no direction, up is down, and left is right?? There is nothing blocking the optical mouse. Then all of a sudden, they start working fine. I am ready to lose my mind. ANY ideas?

uninstall and then reinstall your drivers.

IF that doesn't work ... udate your virus protector - unplug from internet
    and scan your system.

IF that comes up clean or doesn't fix the problem.

See if you installed anything - including auto updates - on or around
the time you started having problems. It might be a simple conflict.

If that still doesn't work ... make sure mouse is not plugged in
or have a wireless connection. Then uninstall the mouse.

plug it in allow windows to install- then change the irq setting.

As I said, this is been going on for 2 weeks. 2 corded, 2 wireless, changed batteries, different brands, ran AVG, AVAST & Malwarebytes. There were a few bad guys but nothing changed after I ran all 3. HOW can drivers for 4 mice go bad at the same time?
I am still running WINXP...I am beginning to believe it is NOT my mice but my computer. Am I getting ready to crash? We re-built my XP about 18 months ago.

Its more then likely a conflict. The reason I suggested to uninstall
and reinstall is often windows will figure out the conflict on its own
or find a unused port / irq and set it automatically.

Your correct, it is more then likely NOT your mice.

I doubt it is a sign it is about to crash. ( altho it can be )

it is probably something as simple as a double registry entry
caused by installing or uninstalling something.

Finding WHAT that is ... is often quite tricky.

      --edit --

Do you have the mouse issues when your not sufeing the web?

does it happen ... regardless of the software or only when you have a browser open?

I sort of remember something about browser plug ins causing the mouse to go wonky.

My computer is always on...Look at post #1. The first thing I did was try and close windows that where open during the night. 3 mice would not move, then they were totally eratic and about 20 minutes later all was fine with the logitech corded.

    Hey dumb question ...

Are all of those USB? ... if so. THAT might be your problem.
Disable them all and reinstall them - it might be just that easy of a fix.

Do you know how or do you need directions?

That was my first thought, USB driver. I had this happen on a smaller scale a few years back. If the USB driver flakes out, everything USB can go at the same time.

      Good luck.

    Serry.....

    REAL STUPID QUESTION!!!!!!

If up is down, and left is right, isit possible that some setting could have changed, tomake it appear as if, or could the mouse actually be, upside down?

    Otherwise, ken is right.

I forgot about your sex, and wouldn't have assumed anyway.

There IS some setting that reverses those things. I just don't remember what it is.

Going into the device manager will allow you to remove, update, change those drivers. It can be tricky, to do directly, and even microsoft won't help you.

People playing practical jokes on users using viruses and the like have been there LONG before the XP eol. One of the most famous, and destructive, worms happened as a practical joke, to prove he could do it.

Yeah, for some reason, the failure of audio is popular. I had that happen on at least 2 computers, though I finally got it back. ODD, since I did nothing to them.

The "on ac power" may simply be the way the new power management software works. For a bit over a decade, most computers have had a "power management" system that controlled processor speed, disk readiness, and screen brightness and, as part of that, it determines battery capacity, and whether or not it is charging. This laptop shows a graphic of a little plug next to the a graphic of a battery(which shows the battery usage).

OH YEAH. "ON AC POWER" is kind of a misnomer at this point for "USING EXTERNAL POWER". It hearkens back to computers being desktops, and most used AC power direct from the outlet. My computer, for example, like most laptops today, uses DC power, no matter what. HECK,even some desktops do.

HEY, if you UPDATED the drivers, it is the manufacturers fault, not YOURS! I was having some fun anyway. The power coming from the outlet IS AC! It is simply that a LOT of electronic stuff today has that bulky plug, or the "brick" type piece. That knocks the power down to the proper voltage and almost ALWAYS changes it to DC. So the power entering the case of most computers today is DC.

When I was a kid, many devices had cords that said AC/DC. Some people in my generation bothered to investigate and at least learn what THOSE things meant. Some DIDN'T. And some kids today might be as likely to know AC as they are AM(radio). So I simply explained it.

I understood every other work you said. I actually give up. Hopefully my tech can come over this week end and we will decide if fixing this mess makes sense or finally upgrading to Win7 makes more sense.

Joe, I thought I did do a restore but I may have done it wrong??

If you want ... I can give you directions right now on how to remove your USB drivers
                    and then reinstall them.

I did the same thing. It is funny how you sometimes view people a certain way, even though there is no reason to view them in any way. Of course I know that it is some creation and not because I saw the person at some point, or was told that.

You guys thought I was young male because we have had many a political conversation. I have posted several times that I petitioned on 4 of the MJ initiatives. I was the notary for amendment 64 and spent months at the SOS's office validating voter signatures.I am almost 65!!

Thanks Ken for the offer. It makes no sense to fix an operating system that is ancient. I will upgrade to WIN7. I can only hope that the Outlook Express conversion work around will work at get my 10K email into Outlook.

If you are still using XP then it is possible you have some kind of virus - and remember the newer ones don't give much or any indication they are resident on your machine - of course your mice spazzing is pretty obvious.

But seriously there are gangs (infestations) of hackers just scheming on what to do to people using XP after all the warnings. It's not a 'theory' it is actually happening yesterday.

If nobody mentioned running crap cleaner (ccleaner.com) download free from piriform - do not accept the download from hippo something as it has malware/adware attached. - Yeah clean up your hard drive and sweep the registry - it only takes a few minutes after you download it to run cleaner and sweep reg.

Also try your disk check and defrag in Windows - Check to automatically fix errors when you do the scan - you will have to restart your computer after you schedule the disk check.

With that said I have had issues like you describe and my first inclination when you said you would kill them was - ENJOY - I have had a real blast swinging and smashing mice - just be sure you leave one alive or you will feel really dumb - not only for being violent but for the fact you now have to go to the store in order to use your PC. (been there)

    ;o)

To quote the IT Crowd "Have you tried turning your computer off and on again?"

Seriously, though I'm on windows 7 and my mouse occasionally does this. I have my laptop on most of the time but turning off and on again usually stops the mouse from being silly. It could be something that simple, if you've already run virus scans etc.

I would not do that joe. She is using XP. It is notorious for bieng super
easy for "hidden features to get imbedded in that particular back up system"

I actually recommend turning that off completely and using some type
      of external back up.

Now that they MS said no more updates ... it is probably even more
      important to not use it.
