BTW the most famous example of suspicion of a HOODIE type clothing is likely the UNABOMBER!!!!!

And YEAH, he was WHITE.

"He is known for his wide-ranging social critiques, which opposed industrialism and modern technology.[2][3] [4][5] Between 1978 and 1995, Kaczynski engaged in a nationwide bombing campaign against people involved with modern technology, planting or mailing numerous home-made bombs, ultimately killing a total of three people and injuring 23 others."

That was LONG before trayvon! Trayvon was born 1995, and this was over 16 years before HE died:

But we COULD talk about ski masks and the like and go back decades earlier. That distrust isn't racism. It is inate fear that they might be hiding something.

And Stephen A Smith is right. If more listened to his comments here, the world would be a better place. He not only talked about this perception of prejudices, but he gave some nice life advice.

Steven's comments are right on time.

And you were one of the people in here who felt they had to trash someone who was simply going to the store and then going back home - who ended up dead - after being followed by a policeman wannabe.

And you have echoed YOUR biases here.

I did NOT trash trayvon. YOU trashed ZIMMERMAN. I merely said that zimmermans claims COULD be true.

Zimmerman trashed himself. As far as I can discern, Steven A. Smith didn't mention that self-defeating fool by the name of George Zimmerman. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Steven A. Smith articulated his position very well and I agree with it 100% (assuming he didn't defend George Zimmerman, that is). I don't even see what is controversial about it. He talked about people need to represent themselves well (themselves as individuals, not their whatever skin-color), exhibit some self-control, and be responsible for their behavior in order to maximize the probability of success. George Zimmerman illustrates very well what probably lies in store for a person who doesn't have self-control and behave mindfully.

Right on ALL counts! HEY, I thought zimmerman and OJ simpson BOTH got railroaded. BOTH quickly trashed themselves later. Sometimes it seems a shame they have the double jeopardy deal.

I actually like the episodes, like on NCIS and Law and order, where the guy goes through a long trial, is found not guilty, gloats, smiles, and starts to skip out all happy, etc.... and they arrest him on a charge even WORSE than what he was just tried on, and send him straight to jail, AGAIN to wait for the trial he'll probably LOSE.

I don't believe smith talked about zimmerman, but merely how appearances can affect decisions and how Cuban gave examples for blacks AND whites, to make it clear nothing racial was intended. I brought up trayvon ONLY because I knew some figured hoodies=trayvon. But the unbomber was shown with a VERY similar garment and suspicious because of it. It is only unfortunate coincidence that they found him about the same time trayvon was born.

Yeah, suzanne, you have a point. And if she were someone like Beyonce, it would still be like the picture you posted. And if it were a couple SMALL boys, like maybe 8, people would care less about it. Heck, when they first talked about trayvon, they made him sound like a slight 12 year old, when he was a huskier by and 17.

I don't know what exactly happened that tragic night --> but IMHO GZ has been acting like an idiot since he was acquitted. I suppose anyone can feel threatened or intimidated by someone or something, and it's very tough to get in someone's mind to say for sure. Everyone feels different things for different reasons taken from different life experiences.

That said...I suppose some of you may feel threatened if one of the boys from my favorite band came strolling through your complex on a dark rainy night. I doubt many of you would involve yourself in a confrontation...but I bet some of you would think about calling the cops just like GZ did that night.

Those guys may look scary to some of you folks --> but to me they look like the great artists of Korn. That's Jonathon Davis in the middle and Brian "Head" Welch with the hoodie on.

Some of you politically savvy and/or current events aware peeps may get a kick out of the video for the "Spike in my Veins" cut off of their latest album, Paradigm Shift. Jonathon Davis is not a big Barack Obama fan...in-fact I don't think he's a big fan of the US government these days period.

They look like Korn to me and they look like most/many rock and roll/alternative groups. Clothing and styles don't frighten me. I'd much rather meet Korn on the street, than a quiet, geeky looking white guy named Adam Lanza or any of recent mass murderers who did not have a "look" that would tell you that they were mentally ill and about to commit a horrible crime.

That's great...it's just too bad a decent sized chunk of society may not have the same degree of open-mindedness as you do. I agree though --> it's the more "normal" looking psycotics that are often times the most dangerous serial killers and/or mass murders.

I would not have been frightened if I saw Lanza. He looked like a somewhat mentally ill kid to me. I see the homeless mentally ill in town all the time, talking to themselves, ranting at nobody. I stopped one day and bought two breakfast sandwiches for one of them and walked over and gave it to him. He chased me to my car asking me to marry him. lol. I won't be feeding him again.

I don't know if I would have bothered crossing the street. I wouldn't be afraid of HIM, per se. If he had a gun or some such, or the area had problem points, I would have avoided him.

Right? There's a lot of guys out there wearing designer suits that will beat the snot out of you without thinking twice. They usually aren't the type who attack you walking down the street, though - they use their look of decency and success to lure you in first instead.

How about police? Would you be afraid if you were stranded in the middle of nowhere some night and a cop came by? You should be. At the crisis center we taught women to never get into a police car (willingly) if they were broken down somewhere without having the cop call in and tell the station you were in the car.

I've seen them in concert. They rocked the house down. I have their CDs.

I feel like the guy (you?) in one of the previous posts. Clothes don't bother me so much - it's the face I look for.....the eyes and sometimes the set of the jaw. I do stay away from the low ride pants guys.......not sure if that's really fear or just revulsion, though.

Women - I watch for groups. Most women won't attack on their own unless they are just plain mental cases, but some in groups can get pretty violent now, too.

I'm not one of the many Mark Cuban haters although he can be very annoying. However, he comes across as an idiot in that interview with INC. First of all, I won't cross the street if a black kid in a hoodie walks towards me, or a bald white dude with facial tattoos and especially with a Korn band member walking towards me. lol Korn doesn't look threatening or tough at all. I am just not one of those frightened people I guess and I do walk around some so called dangerous areas such as Oakland. It makes me wonder about Cuban. It isn't about him living in a glass house, it's about him living an apparently very sheltered life.

Bring up the image of a black kid with a hoodie was dumb also. He apologized for that and rightfully so in my opinion. Stephen A agreed with Cuban and looks dumb for doing so imo. He deserves being called out on it, although I hate the "uncle Tom" remarks. That's just stupid.

By the way, does anyone know why my Case for Aparations thread was locked? Did I miss something? Perhaps a few posts that may have been posted and deleted before being locked? I can't figure out why that thread was locked otherwise. I was going to post that people should just read that article whether or not it would change their opinion on aparations. It's one of the best written articles I have seen this year and will likley be cited and quoted for years to come.

I avoid getting in close proximity to anyone of any color who walks around with a hoodie and pants half-way down their underwear. It is a posturing get-up and hints at an attitude problem. Mark Cuban was obviously tactless in his wording, but I think Stephen A. Smith made legitimate points and was fair to point out how the second part of Mark Cuban's statement was being edited out to make him come across as racist.

As a solutions orientated person, and a former rottweiler owner that lived in Baltimore with him, I suggest walking your rottweiler down the street and watch black people with hoodies and white people with tatoos on their face cross the street to avoid you and your rotty.

This is really true. Even when my rottie was a harmless 6 month old puppy, I'd see people cross the street still a block or two away to avoid us.

I own some hoodies, so a hoodie itself isn't enough to make me cross the street, but no matter what your color if you're wearing gold chains around your neck and your pants are sagging to your knees... I'm going to avoid you.
If you're walking down the street posturing in an aggressive manner I'm avoiding you.

If you're just going from point A to point B and obviously uninterested in those around you or just taking note of where people are so you can walk around them? No problems

Heck one of my hoodies gets me avoided. It's wearable art a friend gave me.. It kinda looks dirty because of the worn look the paint gives it, and on the back a big Misfits patch, big enough to cover the back.(For those who don't know The Misfits is an old school punk band.)
The picture on the patch is:
    http://www.oztix.com.au/Portals/10/The%20misfits.gif

I've hung out with a wide array of people in my life, and the only ones I avoid are those I think of as "thugs."

    Tattoos? No problem.
Dread locks and black leather? No problem.
    Dressed in drag? No problem
Cowboy hat and boots? No problem

Look like a thug? I'm going to judge you.
