Question about "WSO Breaking News" emails

Is the WSO Breaking News an official WF newsletter, or is it spam from someone else using the name? I don't recall agreeing to receieve it, but it's possible. If it's legit, I'll keep getting it. If not, it's history.

    Joel,

Mail from the forum so far shows Received lines that include mail2.warriorforum.com [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] and mail3.warriorforum.com (*.amazonaws.com [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx])

Post the headers (with your email address redacted) and I can probably tell you if it's legit or not.

Glad to see you around Paul! Are you still a moderator after the takeover?

      Joel,

That's not from the forum. It's registered to someone in Greece, and hosted on a German IP. Most likely spam, as are the majority of the emails from domains with WSO in them.

      Jimmy,
Are you still a moderator after the takeover?
Not doing much of it. I delete spam I happen to see while browsing, and check the JV section most days, but that's it any more. Probably won't even be doing that for much longer.

Done my bit. I'm spending my time on my own projects now.

Good for you. Out of interest seeing as the advert for moderator jobs had to live in a certain area and do shifts (so I assume they'll cover all the time zones) is this going to be a member moderated forum still? Because if it is and all the mods are new, I'm not sure they'll get some of what we report.

What I mean is, if you're not moderating and none of the people that do now are, I'm not sure I'll bother reporting any more. One only needs to have a brief look in here to see where the spam is.

I'm not talking about the rest of the forum of course.

          Richard -

I've wondered the same and have asked about continuing member moderation in a couple thread but had no response.

I've noticed much of spam remains quite a while even after it's reported so not sure 'member mod' is part of the plan now. With paid mods on board I doubt many members will spend time reporting spam here. Won't be necessary. I've seen a difference in threads (and not in a good way) that told me mods are changing over.

I've always felt member moderating was helping out Paul and Rod and others who worked hard to keep the WF free of crap and did it on their own time. To me, member moderation was a great idea/implementation on Allen's part.

With paid mods, won't need it.

            Paul -

I'd say you've done you bit - and the bit of a few dozen other people, too!!!

I've enjoyed the way you can cut through to the point and explain a convolution so even the village idiot gets it

Thanks Kay, I think that's answered it although I'd like Paul's take.

Paul, as you are off, have a good one and many thanks for the way you dealt with people and kept this place the way it was, and Rod and any others that did it.

I'll pop by your site and buy you a beer soon.

          Richard,

None of the existing mods have been "removed." As far as I know, I'm the only one who's dropped it, and I told Allen that would happen when he first told me he was thinking of selling the place. I didn't drop surprises on anyone.

The new mods they're hiring will go through the same learning curve the existing mods did, but without the benefit of having been active members here for years first. That will have good and bad points, but I expect they'll balance out.

Freelancer wants mods to actively patrol for spam, so reporting the obvious stuff that's posted as thread starters will not be as important. The posts in the middle of threads will be, just like now. Even with 15 people doing it, there won't be enough time for them to read every post in every thread.

The only really tricky stuff is in the sales sections. Some of those require more personal balance than a new moderator is likely to have, and a knowledge of how the games are played by sellers, customers, and trolls. Alaister has all the skills and experience needed for it, but I doubt your average newbie will.

That's going to be their biggest challenge. Even when you know the system and the players, there are always new wrinkles.

I think it is. The delays are down to other issues.

That part is easy. I have to do that so I can understand it myself.

Seriously... most of this stuff isn't all that complicated. You just think through the process and see what's next. Pretty much a common sense thing.

Paul, being selfish for a moment, I think that's about the worst piece of news I've heard concerning this forum since the takeover. Not that I blame you one iota.

Good luck with your projects and thanks for all your sterling work on the boards.

I agree. Again, no blame, but moderation will not be the same. Hope that he'll continue to add his bits to some of the conversations.
