Last Day at Work.....

Today is my last day of work. Been with this job for 20 years - full time for 14 years and then part time. I've been reluctant to pull the plug as I've been able to work very limited hours (2-3 days a week) and it's been a nice balance to the solitude of working at home.

I've come close to quitting several times but every time I'd mention it, my work hours would be readjusted to suit me and I've end up staying on. It can be hard to walk away from basically easy money.

Yesterday I dealt Pai Gow with $1k / hand players....hoping to have an easy game today with a low limit so I can have some fun with the players.

I thought I would be a bit sad today - but I just want to get it over with and move on. After months of dithering back and forth - it was suddenly time to quit.

Yeay, me!

Coming from a once baker and cake decorator, there's something about that cake that's wrong.
What's wrong with it is I don't have my face buried in it trying to win a one person cake eating contest.

I've never baked a cake in my life, but I can sure appreciate the notion of burying my face in a cake.

Look at it this way, Thom: 'No harm in looking'

No calories, no cholesterol, no saturated fat, no sugar, YOU WIN!

We can all just imagine eating the entire cake (or just all the frosting)

p.s. it would be pure heaven on wheels to be a cake decorator - except they would need to roll me in and out...

    Congrats!

My wife stopped working about a year and a half ago. It took her a good year to relax and enjoy the opportunity to do her own thing.

Now,if I could just get her to stop with all the shopping...

That'd be messy in court if your current boss sacked you and you sued him for unfair dismissal.

      Sal - Already, I don't miss it.

I thought I'd be a bit sentimental - but wasn't at all. I just wanted the day over and wanted out. Because I usually have 3-4 days off at a time it will take a week or two to get used to it but I'll work on it.

      So, what'ya gon'na do Kay?
Going to get back into doing some writing for others on a limited basis and a lot of writing for myself. That's later, though. I think June and July are going to be chill out and planning months.

Good for you. It's amazing how busy you can be at home just doing things for yourself and your family. It won't leave you time to miss it. There are some friends I've missed, but never one pang of misery not going back to a place I wasn't happy.

It was a great job for many years. I wanted to live closer to my son who flew with the Hurricane Hunters for 16+ years and this was the only job that paid what I was accustomed to earning before I moved to Mississippi.

It used to be a great place to work - then when Harrah's bought it out it became an OK place to work - and the last year or two it's been "a job".

Feels strange this morning - but I'll get used to it.

      Hi Ken -

I think I have to get it straight in my mind. I notice today I frequently think "need to do that before I have to work again" and then realize I don't have to go to work again.

For a couple years my schedule was ideal - I worked 2 weekend days and that was it. Weeks were free for IM, writing and (my favorite) goofing off.

This last 12-18 months we've had renovations at the casino, hiring freeze, and everything has conspired to change my schedule to 3-4 days a week, constantly changing days, etc. I got bored with that quickly. I've also been dealing high limit games frequently which are more stressful and less fun than the $10-$25 limit tables where you can tease around with the guests.

For a while I'll be working a lot this fall to get systems set up - but plan is to work it so it can be maintained in 20-30 hrs a week after initial work is done.
      I know - best laid plans....but worth a shot!

I always watch the Suze Orman show. And Suze always ask her viewers in your case the following questions:
Do you have 8-month emergency fund?
Do you have credit card debt?
Do you own your home outright?
      Are you funding your retirement?
      Do you have investments?

How long does it take to get your mind around the concept of "no work"?

Every day I find myself thinking "need to check the schedule" or "what day do I work next"....and then must readjust my thinking!

It took me about a full month, but as the time passed, those thoughts gradually came less and less. By about the fourth week, my mind had it down pat that there was no more work and I just had to ask myself what I would "like" to do today or for the week. = )

This may or may not apply to you.

I do know several self-employed people who have the option of working from home, but
choose to have an office because home has too many distractions - or they "play" instead.

I've heard it helps to have a definite space at home designated for work.
