My son, 4, has recently totally gotten into Minecraft. Yesterday he built a bunch of Minecraft Papercraft stuff that was supposed to be for ages 6+. I found it kind of hard, but he showed me how to properly put things together. It was easier for him with his small fingers than it was for me.

Today I finally succumbed to his repeated requests to play the game, so I downloaded it and he's now doing a great job with that too. I still don't even quite get what Minecraft is, though I read about it and learned that it was found to be OK for small kids to play with it and even provides some mental exercise.

I don't play Minecraft (which is a great game) but I do play CastleMiner, Castleminer Z, Total Miner and a few other similar block miners when I get the time. I have built some pretty cool subterranean cities and I wish I could spend more time expanding those cities.

Did someone say these games were for kids? Woops....

    Cheers

One of my grandsons started playing Minecraft when he was three......he loves it!

Like you...I have no idea what he is doing....but I'm impressed.

He's the same grandson that shows me features on my phone I never knew existed.

Little brains are amazing....so quick to absorb everything they see.

It sounds like a similar situation with your grandson. My son picks up on stuff that was in front of my face as well, but that my mind simply didn't register. I do restrict my his use of my cell phone since I prefer that he work with actual objects at this stage of his development. I can't say my son is consistently good at things. He's definitely advanced in some ways and possibly behind in other ways. He misses out on rudimentary instruction in his classes that other kids pick up on, but recently woke me up in the wee hours of the morning to inquire about how plants convert sunlight into energy and what's the difference between sunlight and electricity. After I gave explanations in a bumbling way, he actually rephrased it in a more succinct and coherent way. This is the same kid who has problems grasping the rules for playing tag.

My 10 year old plays this constantly. We have to limit his time or he'd go all day.

But it's been interesting to watch. I made him his own server-based game on his own domain so he can host his own tournaments. He makes videos of his games, edits them and uploads to his own youtube account. He has followers too. And he has a Skype group of about 30 other players.

You still have to watch though. His mother and I approve ALL his Skype additions, we have all his logins to any of his sites/accounts and we monitor his surfing, just to be sure.
