Thailand Won't Make You Happy

Thailand won’t make you happy.

I mean it’s a cool place.

It’s awesome actually.

You can fly half way around the world and sit in a little hotel room by the beach — but you will still be you.

It’s taken me years to realize this.

Happiness and contentment don’t come from external things like parties and beaches. They come from the inside.

They come from friends, and family. And working on stuff you love.

---
This is a recent concept that I have been thinking about a great deal lately. Feel free to add your thoughts as well, would love to hear them.

Of course, happiness comes from within - but it doesn't hurt to be where you love to be at all. If you are where you find the most peace and beauty and you're still not happy, something is wrong and you need to fix it.

So true. I lived in Thailand and Laos many years ago and I absolutely LOVE the Far East. Would move there in a second if I had a chance!

The West is descending. The East is rising.

And working on stuff you love.

I know a couple ExPats on an mc forum that live in Thailand. From what they have said and the pics/videos they've shared, here's what I think of the place.
Thailand may not make you happy, but it sure won't get in your way to being happy

You're right Dave, true happiness comes from within. Places like Thailand will make you FEEL happy for a little while, but you are still left with your own thoughts, values, and belief systems, and it's those things that affect your view of reality.

One reason I've never left this country is because I haven't seen it all yet.
What adds to the beauty of the different regions to me is the history of those regions. For example standing on Mt. Defiance overlooking Ft. Ticonderoga you have an incredible view.
      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_...%28New_York%29
Or riding up to Lake Placid and viewing the Ausable Chasm and surrounding areas.Ausable Chasm - Photo Gallery
There's so much beauty in just the Northeast that I don't ever see myself going to another country.
But I don't begrudge anyone who does want to leave and live somewhere else.

I have not seen all of the US either (especially the east coast) but I have been lucky enough to travel to 12 or 13 countries. I must admit while I have seen some beautiful areas (and people) of the world I have also seen plenty of beauty and awesome terrain here in the States.

As far as beautiful beaches go --> as incredible as the Maldives were, (except for the remoteness) the beauty and the beaches reminded of a bit of the beauty and the beaches I have seen in Hawaii. Albeit the islands of the Maldives were quite small, and I mean smaller than Gilligan's Island!

I have traveled to many states across the country, and I have lived in Florida, California, Arizona, Illinois and Iowa so I have seen plenty of forests, mountains and beaches etc...but quite possibly the coolest place I have seen anywhere in the world was Yellowstone Park with its abundant animal life, amazing geysers, steam pots and mud pots etc. Simply an amazing place...

That said...I have visited Kenya, and I must say it is quite hard to find wild elephants, giraffes and many of those other beautiful creatures here in the states.

Anyway, I agree with the general theme of the thread...happiness has much more to do with how you feel on the inside and your relationship with your family and friends etc...but it sure doesn't hurt my mind any to have beautiful surroundings.

As far as Thailand goes I knew many guys that visited Thailand when I was in Singapore, in-fact a few people I knew way back in the day liked it so much they moved there to try to make a go of it.

Finally, the picture that was posted by the OP reminded me a bit of a photo I took over a decade ago while I was sightseeing in and around the Wisconsin Dells.

        Cheers

I totally agree with the theme and premise of the original post. When it comes to friends and relationships, it is best for peace of mind if people like you for the way you are rather than an image you're trying to project over yourself as some individuals do when they try to escape themselves by going to other countries.

The most profound thing I learned about happiness -

The people who chase it, who believe they're naturally entitled to it, who believe they should be happy all the time... those are the same exact people who are usually the most depressed, unstable, and likely to lose their minds.

I don't care what society says, what big pharma says, what the media says, what friends or family say... humans are NOT suppose to be happy all the time. And we live in a very messed up society that teaches people the exact opposite. "Take this pill so you can be happy", "get this car", "buy this home", "join this club", "take this trip", "buy these clothes" etc etc.

And unfortunately, a lot of people fall for those "happy traps".

Then they wake up 1 day and realize they're depressed as hell. Because lets face it, most of life is boring and repetitive. If you think you're suppose to wake up everyday and just be happy for no reason, you're going to be in for a rude awakening. Even if you hit the lotto or become famous... as time passes by it will become your new baseline. You're new boredom. And I think it's very important to welcome these negative emotions as much as people welcome the positives. Because there is a universal balance to nature, our lives, our emotions, and the people who try to disrupt that balance... they'd have better luck trying to stop the world from spinning.

Au contraire, Monsieur Rouge; people have an innate ability to be happy, but...

...we live in a very messed up society that teaches people the exact opposite. "Take this pill so you can be happy", "get this car", "buy this home", "join this club", "take this trip", "buy these clothes" etc etc.
Exactly so. Unhappiness has to be learned. And our society does a great job teaching it.

Anyone who believes happiness depends on something they get, is destined for a life of disappointment. Here's a short TED presentation by Srikumar Rao, who explains how we're "hard-wired" for happiness. It's a few years old, but the message is timeless:

Yep, went on a short break to a 5 star hotel, after breaking up with someone.

I was just depressed in nicer surrounding, although l did have more to do during the day, so there was that!

Also explains why celebrates, especially the 20 year old ones, go nutso, later on in life; a fancy room, at a luxury resort, can end up being a 5 star prison!

Also explains why some millionaires go for a normal suburban house, with a fancy car. They don't want a mansion, with dodgy friends!

Now see - there's something quotable. Where'd the thread go?

I've always known it. I could have been a high earner. Easily. I had contacts and position. Didn't want it. Not the corporate route with the sensible reserved "anything for the bucks" crowd. I've always been more true to myself than to any company. It's cost me materially, but I really am kewl with where I am inside my head and space. Give me a shack with a bathtub and a dog and stick me out of town and that's all I need........oh yeah - the Jeep. Need that to get the rocks and take the dog great places.

People chase happiness with drugs and sex and "experiences". Crazy thing is the reason 'happy' feels so good is because it's often rare and fleeting. You can increase your chance of being happy by surrounding yourself with people you love in a place you like to be - but happy isn't guaranteed.

On the other hand, if youare going to be 'not happy' - might as well have a great view!

Here's a few places and things to do in the US that are on my bucket list.

I want to go on a camping trip on horseback to red rock canyon (maybe some white water rafting also).

...and then follow it up with some gambling in Vegas

... and a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon

... then a trip to Big Sur

... then off to the Outer Banks to charter a boat for fishing

... just some highlights. I can think of a lot more with more time.

I went to Camber Sands (AKA 'Ganja Sands') this weekend and stayed in a friends chalet. Being next to Essex and the East End of London, it does tend to attract the sort that sport spider web facial tattoo's, fight for fun and it's generally known as the council estate by the beach.

Excellent fun though, lovely fish and chips, good beer and a better beach than we get normally on this little island.

Having said that, 6 months in Thailand many years ago didn't go amiss.

Suzanne - if Red Rock Canyon is your idea of terrific scenery.........you need to take a summer to just cruise around the Western states. You would not believe the beauty out here. The East is pretty - at times beautiful --- but the West is just plain breathtaking.

As far as Grand Canyon -- I would kill to get a permit to hike around the Isis Pyramid area and somehow get permission to go into a few of the caves they have sealed off......as long as the artifacts are still there. Won't ever happen, but I can still dream about it.

Not sure if you saw the pics on the blog entry I posted about my website meet-up, but that canyon draws wows out of everyone on their first trip through. If canyons are your thing - there's a whole list of "should see's" out here.

That's where I would go. Having lived most of my life on the East Coast, I'd be heading west for my adventure. The red rock photos are some of the most beautiful scenery I've seen. I'm also very drawn to the ocean. I'm happiest near the ocean, with ocean views, boating and fishing.

I've noticed that I really like being next to water too. I wonder why? Is it in our DNA?
Is there an evolutionary advantage to be near water (I'm guessing there is, because we drink water).

And most people live near the coasts (in the USA anyway).

Even listening to waves lap at the edge of a lake is incredibly soothing. No idea why. After all, it's just noise...and scents.

I agree. I love just listening to the sound of the ocean. My mother was the same way and she was raised by Navy people who also loved the ocean, so maybe there's something to the gene thing. Don't know, but I feel a sense of wellness, body and mind, near the ocean.

Sea salt air is loaded with minerals and is extremely restorative for our bodies, so there's actually a physiological reason people feel so good at the oceans.

I prefer mountains - lakes, streams to oceans. It's kewl that we're in a country that has terrain to satisfy every preference. As far as scenic diversity, we really got packed with plenty of it.

    Yup, no doubt about that!

If awesome canyons are your cup of tea here are 27 of the best...Horeshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon are included, of course.

My problem is that every time I'm really happy...or really sad?

      I realize it's because I don't completely understand what's really going on.

Actually, if you did completely understand everything that was going on in the universe, it probably would make you sad.

Maybe, but I wasn't talking about everything in the universe. just the bigger picture of what was making me happy or sad.

Not so. I understand everything that's going on in the universe, and I'm as happy as a pig in slop.

I've given this a little thought.

Let's say that you literally meant "Universe".
Why would you be sad? Planets forming, suns igniting, galaxies colliding....you know..Big Stuff. Oh, and most of these things aren't alive...so why would we be happy or sad about anything that happens in the universe?

Four billion years ago, a planet collided with ours...to form Earth. So...bad for whoever lived on the planet...good for us. A meteor collided with Earth, and killed all the dinosaurs. A huge tragedy...but if it didn't happen, we wouldn't be here. Every element heavier than Helium.....was formed in an exploding star. The gold in your ring was only formed in Super Novas....Exploding Suns... Death creates as well as destroys.

A loved one dies, someone else is born. You lose a dollar, someone finds a dollar. You get a new job, someone else gets fired. You lose your job today, you get a better one tomorrow.

Maybe you are sad...today, because something happened to you...today. But even in an individual life, sometimes things go our way, sometimes not.

The more I learn and experience, the greyer I see the world. When something great happens, I know the effect wears off quickly. When tragedy happens, I know that tomorrow it will be better. And when something bad happens to me, I know that at the same time...something good is happening to someone else.

Every feeling is fleeting. Every sadness passes. And these things pass quickly. We have to sleep, and then we wake up, it's a new day..with a new set of challenges, and new things to learn.

Want to get rid of sadness? Be of service to someone else. It's impossible to be sad when you see someone happy because of your efforts.

Every person who said they were sad, was wrapped up in their own little problems, their own little world. You need to see beyond today..and beyond yourself.

          I really talk like that.

Strictly speaking, everything on this planet is made of nuclear waste from those processes.

Plus, you've got entropy to deal with. Everything decays over time, meaning that it's all doomed sooner or later.

Of course we can all be happy in the here and now - I usually am, in fact - but the farther you try to see beyond yourself and beyond today, the worse things get. Just sayin'

You are describing half the process. The other half is reproduction or rebirth.

We all die, but most of us have children. Stars explode, but give birth to new stars. Entropy is real. Everything eventually decays and dies...but in the process, becomes something else. How many living things do you think originally had the atoms that make up our bodies?

Every exploding sun gives birth to another sun...and planets...and elements.

Every death becomes food for the next generation.

Entropy will eventually decide the fate of the universe. But it will be in trillions of years from now. And there will be nothing but diffused neutrons.

And the odds are, you'll be dead before then. So why be sad about anything?

Sand is just digested rock....pooped out by fish..long ago, and still today. Oxygen is plant waste. Everything recycles.

Sure, entropy will eventually win...when even the parts of atoms break down...but that's sooo far in the future...that we can't even imagine the time it will take.

But way before that happens, all intelligent life will be gone...and then, who will be sad?

I believe that the basic premise is faulty. While there may be several factors contributing to one's happiness, environment can, and usually does play a large part in those feelings.

Did the original poster say that environment didn't play a role? If it a matter of switching from one comfortable-enough environment to another one and someone still is uncomfortable in their own skin, wouldn't the problem likely be from within rather than external? As in all things, the solution to each individual's problems aren't one-size-fits all?

I would have thought that Thailand won't necessarily make you happy would be a better description.

There are many things you don't know until you have lived there for a long time.

My mother is a Canadian citizen and she absolutely loves it over there. But she came back because I and my family are here. So I feel a bit bad about that.

Exactly. Places are places. They do not change anything internally. Family, friendsand being fulfilled is what matters.

Places can never make you happy, but some of them can definitely make you feel less stress for a while.

For me, there are some externally limiting factors:

    Strongly disagree with the government.
Crime in the area. Too many people.
    Weather constantly over 80 degrees.
    High humidity.

Some friends of mine just returned from a month in the Grand Canyon.
They went with their friends who had obtained a private permit.
They went at a very leisurely pace and explored a lot of side canyons everyday.
That would be a nice way to do it.
