It'll be an interesting experiment on the effects of time and issues. Over time, with new generations of leaders replacing the previous ones, will they, the media, and the public simply lose interest in Julian Assange and Edward Snowden? Will they some day be able to sneak away to Uruguay or wherever without anyone hardly even noticing? Or will they be like Cuba, with policies towards them basically solidified like cement?

Those are good questions, unfortunately only time will answer them.

I believe that the "cat is out of the bag" now. Even if Assange and Snowden are found with both hands tied behind their back with a gunshot wound to the head, and declared to have committed suicide, someone else will step up to take their place.

These two, along with Chelsea Manning, have changed the world. They've made everyone question authority to at least some extent, and have revealed things which (most) traditional outlets have chosen to keep buried, when it should be their job to actually reveal them.

Without them, NSA shenanigans would have had zero exposure and scrutiny. Will it significantly change the way NSA collects data and what it does with it remains to be seen. It appears by this document that the world has learned nothing from the global economic meltdown and I suspect some serious backlash from this when the media wakes up and analyses this draft document in full.

        Here's an analysis
        http://wikileaks.org/tisa-financial/...cial-annex.pdf

Here's the draft Trade in Services Agreement (TISA)
        Financial Services Annex doc here
        http://wikileaks.org/tisa-financial/...cial-annex.pdf

        Here's the highlights:

This memorandum provides a preliminary analysis of the leaked
financial services chapter of the Trade in Services Agreement dated
14 April 2014. It makes the following points:

        • The secrecy of negotiating documents exceeds even the
Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) and runs counter to
moves in the WTO towards greater openness.

        • The TISA is being promoted by the same governments that
installed the failed model of financial (de)regulation in the WTO
and which has been blamed for helping to fuel the Global
        Financial Crisis (GFC).

        • The same states shut down moves by other WTO Members to
critically debate these rules following the GFC with a view to
        reform.

        • They want to expand and deepen the existing regime through
TISA, bypassing the stalled Doha round at the WTO and creating
a new template for future free trade agreements and ultimately
        for the WTO.

        • TISA is designed for and in close consultation with the global
finance industry, whose greed and recklessness has been blamed
for successive crises and who continue to capture rulemaking in
        global institutions.

        • A sample of provisions from this leaked text show that
governments signing on to TISA will: be expected to lock in and
extend their current levels of financial deregulation and
        liberalisation; lose the right to require data to be held onshore;
        face pressure to authorise potentially toxic insurance products;
and risk a legal challenge if they adopt measures to prevent or
        respond to another crisis.

Without the full TISA text, any analysis is necessarily tentative. The
draft TISA text and the background documents need to be released
to enable informed analysis and decision-making

Not sure the US could be further embarrassed - though many of people don't seem to realize how far down we've fallen.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

One of the things that kept Australia out of the meltdown was a well regulated banking system. Put simply, Australian banks weren't allowed to participate in the shennanigans that brought other countries to their knees. Now it seems that the regulations that kept everything in place here are going to be removed for no benefit at all to the Australian people, or even our financial system.

A new article in the link above is one of the better ones I've seen about Wikileaks and the effect it has had on people.
