Hi

I'm new to Windows 8 (just have it installed onto my computer)

Does it come with MS Word?

Could you recommend any office client / alternative besides OpenOffice.org?

Thank you.

CodrutTurcanu, WPS Office (formerly Kingsoft Office) is an excellent Microsoft Office replacement that works on desktop computers and on phones.

    Libre office
    Google docs

You can also get Microsoft Office 365 for around $75 a year.

I use LIBRE OFFICE. It is great. I'm migrating to Google docs though. I wouldn't want my docs /data to be hardware dependent. Cloud computing is the future.

How exactly are docs hardware dependent? I can open a word doc on all types of hardware.

My documents (aka docs) are currently only stored in my local hard drive. I am now moving all my data to GOOGLE DOCS so I don't have to be dependent on my hardware and can access my data globally.

Ah, gotcha. You want access to your files from everywhere. Do you work from multiple machines from multiple locations a lot?

I'd like a central storage location for my data because I do swap computers every 3 years. Also, when I am traveling I'd rather not bring my laptop with me. The fact that I have a cloud copy I can access in case my hardware gets stolen or damaged gives me peace of mind.

If you want to be hardware independent and also keep your favorite programs, you should check out Amazon's virtual workspace. It's pretty cheap, allows you to run your fav software and you can access it from anywhere from any device (Apple, Android or Windows). You can set up storage on their cloud.

                Thomas,

This looks very interesting. I spent a few minutes checking it out. If you don't mind, start a new thread (I don't want to hijack this thread), tell us more and let others jump in.

Just make sure that you never register the current free trial version of Word, you will never be able to get rid of it!

I would also Google for Word 2003 or 5, should be cheap or even free?

                  Hey Joe,

Sorry, I didn't see your post until today.

I haven't used it yet since I work at home and don't need to access my stuff on multiple devices. Heck, I need to start taking more breaks from work. haha

It's just virtualization but at a very reduced rate. Companies have been offering services like that for a long time but at corporate rates. Install the Android or IOS software and it runs the windows desktop (on Amazon's cloud services) as if it was native.

Another cool thing Amazon and Otoy is doing is streaming games and desktop programs through a browser. I really hope they can make it work so I can stream my windows desktop software to mac and android devices.

Web app are ok but give me a desktop app anytime.

go for libreoffice. Issue with LO is that it is not fully compatible with MS word. you can open with MS word a file edited in LO, but the layout will show differently

I've used OpenOffice for close to 10 years. It's a quality product, and it's free. https://www.openoffice.org/

I've been using OpenOffice Writer on my newer desktop - didn't feel like paying for MS office again. I tried the free 3 month MS deal with the monthly fee - not impressed so dropped it.

Libre Office is, I believe, a bit more advanced than OpenOffice (could be wrong about that) - but either would do. Free is good!

I have been switching to Google Docs as well, for reasons said above. It's nice to not have to worry my computer suddenly blacks out again and lose all the things I just wrote. For an old guy like me, this cloud technology is awesome.

MS Word is a high priced word processor which is NOT included in Windows 8, but there are several free alternatives available.

Libreoffice / Openoffice are draining resources, they have a clunky ui, they destroy formatting of Microsoft Office files, and I don’t even bother.

I recommend SoftMaker FreeOffice instead, which is a full-fledged office suite from Germany. It works well in opening and showing MS Office files exactly like MS Word, MS Excel or MS PowerPoint itself. It can import all the latest file formats and supports direct PDF exporting. But not only its compatibility with Microsoft Office is much better, but also its coding. It runs fast and reliable and has a small file size and low memory consumption.

Try it out, you can download it free from this website for Windows or Linux: freeoffice (dot) com

OpenOffice is a good choice, but if you are looking for alternative to Word, you can go with AbiWord.
