comes around every 24 hours check your mailbox." Joe Karbo, 1975 from the sands of Sunset Beach, CA.

Today my friend and mentor Joe might say it comes around every hour, check your email.

Today I got my "last chance" to buy a program at a huge discount. The email came from one of the big players in the Writing For Profit field.

Funny thing, I'm an email collector, which is why I sign up for so many opt-ins just to see how they market.

And in this case, I can pull up the identical email from a few months ago, a year ago, and even two and three years ago. Same LAST CHANCE to buy.

Yet it seldom is, is it?

When I started selling, I made the commitment NOT to use bogus Time Limited Offers. If I say it is over, it's over.

But, what about these once in a lifetime opportunities and last chance deals, do you think you'll lose out if you don't act NOW?

Well, that is exactly what the writer of the promotion wants you to think.

Quite frankly, I'm shocked how effective they are, how often they work. They are a standard tool, a much used weapon of influence (scarcity) and one of many tricks of the trade in marketing.

Are people really that gullible?

YES, yes they are. Are you? I don't know. Am I. Yes, YES I am.

I will still fall for it, on some occasions because I've had my fires stoked. My wants have been aroused, the shiny object is almost hypnotic.

Sometimes I buy just out of curiosity, other times because of WHO is making the offer, other times, out of stupidity, and I hate stoopid people, so I, at times, hate me.

But I'm a sucker, going back to buying Sea Monkeys out of Popular Science Magazine, or X-Ray Specs. Sure, a kid is pretty easy to get excited, but there are times as an adult, I fell like an 11 year old.

Are you a sucker too? I admit I am. As a young man I looked to those guys who had an easy time getting girls...and although I always had a friend, I thought I wanted to have more, and more and more. So, I studied the moves of a couple of guys, looking for their secrets.

Much like the young (and not so young) men of today buy all those cheesy courses on getting girls to beg you to take them to bed. A multi-million dollar niche. AND some are sold as a last chance, the magic secrets of seduction will be forever hidden if you don't buy right now.

After 53 years in business and having sold tons of stuff...you would think I don't fall for those sales techniques, even though I've written scores of promotions filled with "hidden persuaders".

So, how about YOU? I've confessed my gullibility, I STILL want that shrunken head my mom never allowed me to buy...but every now and then, I do wear my X-Ray specs to the mall....OH la LA.

PS. Even after a lifetime of study of motivation, human behavior and persuasion, I catch myself being caught in the throes of the a created desire which I simply must buy now. Go figure?

"Hope springs eternal in the human breast" (Alexander Pope in his "Essay on Man" I believe)

And nowhere have I seen greater evidence than in the "make money online" offers, products, forums, and ads.

When you really want to believe something . . . it makes buying into that belief pretty dangerous. You often throw caution, common sense, and sometimes even rational behavior right out the window.

It's no wonder that so many people buy into scarcity even when they know better! The fear of being left behind, of being left out, or of not being included is a powerful motivator.

Those who market scarcity, truthfully, have a powerful weapon. Those who use it in their marketing as often as they change their underwear, and who knowingly lie through their teeth about it, will sooner or later pay the consequences of being exposed as a fraud.

When you sell online, your reputation can make or break your business.

      Steve, you are right, however...

a company, like the Writer's Training have a steady flow of wannabe writers. It has kept Writer's Digest in biz for years.

Today, it is personalized, created for the new in the funnel noob, and operated by auto responder.

It took these guys two weeks and about 9 emails to get to the LAST CHANCE. Now, I don't see it on any of their many promotions online, so the last chance was for me, unless I use one of my many email addresses and sign up again, then it will come around every two weeks.

So, in this instance, I don't think they concern themselves with reputation, the One Time Offer is the thing done as a last effort to get you to buy...

Until they come back with, "Our server crashed"..."my email was down"..."we found some scratch and dents in the corner"...

      etc., etc.

I will admit... I bought the x-ray glasses from the back on my Batman comic book when I was 12 years old. I also bought the Charles Atlas "Muscles in 6 Weeks." ... and many IM products when I first started out.

If I buy now I buy only with some knowledge on the subject material, knowing that the plan someone is selling will likely need to be tweaked to work. But if I have knowledge in the arena and I feel like it might be scalable I'll go for it - if the price is right.

There is lot of science behind all of this. They will show your dreams that anyone wants to fulfill. This gives you the desire and then like "Angels", they offer to show the path to fulfill the dreams. Desires would make person leave logic behind and go after the desire.

You and I may have been spawned from the same pond. I love buying. I love sending away for the next shiny object. I buy books on marketing, when it will take me years to get to them. Selling is what I love, and listening to a great pitch is smoke to my nostrils.

I've bought products, not because I believed what was said, but because the copywriting was so expert, that I bought as a form of Tribute to the writer.

The "Buy today. Only the first 12 get that price" thing? I listen to it every time I hear a pitch from the front of the room. I hate it. I hate it enough, that I refused to do it myself (when speaking), because I thought it was insulting.

But I had to start imposing a limit, just like everyone else. It simply works too well.

I wish it didn't. The whole idea offends me.

True fact: Claude once was compelled to make a purchase by his own advertisement. He tittered with joy when Paypal sent him the notification of sale. The next few minutes were a very confusing time for Claude.

Truth is, I've only tittered with joy three times in my life. Once, on the first date with my wife, when I found out my wife wasn't a man.

The second time, when I was tested an found out I didn't have Herpes (Which, by extension, means Riffle doesn't have Herpes)...

And the third time, when I thought I made a sale online...and it lasted until I found out that I bought it.

      (This next part is true).
I threw away a silver painted tackle box, that my dad gave me, to use as a cash box.

A few hours later, a kid came in my store with that same tackle box, wanting to sell it to me for $10. He had a complete story of how much he paid for it, and how much he treasured it. It took him several minutes to complete his masterful sales pitch.

At the end, I said "OK, look. I threw this away a couple of hours ago. You dug it out of my trash. I'll give you $5 for it, because you worked so hard to sell it. But now, I'm going to take it back out into the dumpster, and throw it away..again. Please don't drag it back in here to sell it to me again"

I almost wanted to adopt the kid. What glorious nerve he had.

Does this have anything to do with fantasies about the 3-breasted Martian hooker in "Total Recall"?
