True, if someone made a million from this, then why would they bother creating a WSO?

$100,000 profit tops, instead of ten times that????

But they always cover themselves by saying, they want to give back to humanity, or the l have seen people suffering through this recession, blah, blah!

The "I was dead broke, and now I'm rich, because I found out The Secret" approach is used so often, because it works.

Most people reading the sales letter aren't wealthy, or even making ends meet...so they identify with the "I was broke" part. And there has to be a Secret...or a System. If there is no secret system, then that means that the reader is poor, because it's their fault. And they can't believe that. They just didn't know about "The System" before, and so now they are off the hook.

You can't sell anything by saying "You're broke because you're a lazy bum. If you follow my system, and work your tail off, you'll make money".

Every speaker tells that story too. They have to. If you say "I make a lot of money, because I applied myself for ten years"...you won't sell any courses.

And readers want a story. They want to read drama. "Boring" doesn't sell.

In one of my earliest seminars, an attendee was interrupting my speech, several times.
In the middle of a story, he shouted "What make you so different from me?"

And (Claude the Merciless ) said "Because I'm smarter than you, I know how to sell better than you, and I have more ambition than you. Got that?"

The group all applauded....but I left with zero sales. Why? Because I destroyed my story. And now, I wasn't one of them.

Stories sell.

The thing that strikes me is that although a lot of these systems are fake or way over hyped, there are a few out there by legit people who have actually spent ten years making all the mistakes so they can present some step by step method that works for them so you avoid all the pitfalls and take shortcuts, but still not a magic bullet or button. some work involved.

The trick is to seperate the real ones from the fake ones.

Being in an average job and just about making ends meet and getting by is to some the same as being broke.

That's difficult. When I find the name of the author/guru/WSO producer.....I may do a Google search for their name. I want to know what else they have done.

Are there membership sites where the guru's customers talk about their results? Have they written other books? What do the reviews say? Are they still making money in their original business? (Not always necessary).

Here's what I've seen. The "Fakes" don't last long. They do one WSO...maybe two....and that's it. Not because what they do doesn't work (although maybe that's the case)...but because they are a Wannabe.

You see, selling books, courses, seminars, anything...is real work. It's as hard as making money in any marketing endeavor. And the people that are real? They figure this out.
The Wannabes, think that, if they slap up a WSO, then they will get rich. Nope. It takes marketing, upsells, contact with buyers, and service.

The Real Deals have a reputation. In fact, if you are in the information marketing business for over a year? You already have a reputation. And that's another reason that the Fakes don't last.

Hype gets you in the door, but your reputation is what keeps you growing in business.

It seems that the post count is all that matters. I have Googled some of the most active members.

What I find interesting is, even if you find something (on Ripoff report, scam, or other sites), you are not allowed to warn other members. Isn't that interesting?

You can warn others, but it depends on how you go about it. There have been plenty of WSO's shut down. It's a weekly occurrence. You can post a review in the sales thread if you're a paying customer. If you don't make it a personal attack, chances are it sticks. If you post something in the main forum, it won't.

The fact that you cited the Ripoff Report as a credible source of information demonstrates the problem with allowing people to post anything they want. Nothing is vetted at the Ripoff Report. That makes it a certainty that a portion of what you read there is simply competitor sabotage. The standards are a little higher here.

If this site allowed anyone to post anything, then decent sellers would be vulnerable to slander by their competitors - and there would be plenty of occurrences of it. It happens regularly even with the rules in place, imagine what it would be like without them. But you can submit your evidence to the help desk, and if it's strong enough they'll act on it. The means is there, you just don't get to be judge and jury without any checks and balances.

This exactly. Anyone can post anything on ROR. No confirmation or proof needed whatsoever, so anyone with an axe to grind for any reason or a competitor just posts any kind of sh*t they want to. Sad thing, like yourself HN, some believe every word of it.

I'm personally glad that the WF does not allow that type of sabotage to go on. If you submit proof to a mod that a WSO seller is scamming people, that's all it takes to get it closed and the person banned. Can't back up what you say, you'd better not say it here.

Sometimes the stories are true.

I cleared 250K in 2004-2005 because I broke the Google Code and could build hundreds of sites monetized by Amazon, Clickbank, eBay , Adsense, etc.

Glorious days, those.

Then Google ate my sites.... and income tanked. I did other things/niches (weight loss, teaching kids how to read, etc.) and then returned back to Internet marketing.

It had certainly changed much by then, but one thing has always remained the same.

Build a fanbase. Present products that are one problem/one solution that will satisfy 80% of your customers and leave the rest wanting the enhanced version.

Take your leadgen product, enhance that and create a $97 - $297 3 week Mastermind with the materials that offer additional handholding. Offer that to prior customers.

Build in followup customer care autoresponders that not only give additional ideas but cross-weave your other products into them as well.

Rinse and repeat.

That's all there is to it.

So yep. Lots of people do work until they hit on what works for *them* And then they make it happen. And then turn that into a product for others.

Then comes the story where the underdog bunion sufferer ultimately overcomes the problem with some miraculous bunion cure. Of course, this little formula works for just about any product or service. It makes for a perfect blend of compelling storytelling and sales.

Of course, you don't have to literally use the words feel, felt, found. The point is to identify with your audience with empathy and even sympathy, then show them you were once one of them. And then deliver the cure, which, by the way, is only s few simple clicks away.
