Hey, the US never had hordes of homeless before. For us, this is a new story and idea. Unfortunately - I believe it will become as prevalent was in the 3rd world very soon.

I'm sure the local governments will figure out a way to impose some kind of taxes on the homeless that have these structures. If they can't tax them, they will just come by and haul everything away like has been happening.

Perhaps there is some hope to embarrassing the state and local governments....nah, hasn't happened yet. If the fed gov can shut down the mental hospitals and dump the people on the streets, the locals don't think it's their problem.

When I worked brick and mortar, one of the many homeless on the streets used to sleep on a steam grate by the building in the winter. He used to threaten anyone coming near him with physical harm. I can't imagine that locale ever permitting the homeless to have these portable homes without picking them up as trash.

Years back I had an eccentric and charismatic friend who wasn't homeless himself but made friends with a lot of homeless people. On days he wasn't working (as an engineer), he liked to lie under a tree in a park and chat with homeless people. He was quite a character. One guy told me that he got him off the streets "through the power of friendship." It took a certain amount of courage for my friend to associate with homeless people the way he did. I never fully understood why he did that. It is not something I could do. Homeless people aren't penniless saints. Well, perhaps some of them almost are, but a significant percentage of them have mental problems and there are criminals among their numbers..

For starters, what does the benefactor's melanin level have to do with the intent or effect of the act?

I don't think the folks in this group would have been any less appreciative of the guy's work if we heard about it being done by an other-toned person in one of those 3rd-world countries. An example of that would be the story about the guy who figured out how to use water-filled soda bottles to light up buildings in poor areas in said "3rd-world" countries. Or the fellow who invented the $1 paper microscope. Or the clean water book.

Or any number of other threads where the theme is the same and the location is different.

Isn't that chip on your shoulder getting heavy by now?

It just shows that even first world countries have traces of poverty in them. Yes it's an ordinary situation for those living in third world country, but for a "white guy" to be seriously doing this act of kindness to the unfortunate, now that's news.

It's not the issue of rich country-poor country comparison but the idea that even rich countries have poverty-stricken communities too.
