Have You Ever Tried To Determine Your Own Net Worth?

Really get into the nitty-gritty of expenses vs. what you have financially and own outright to determine what you need to do, especially with retirement looming in the next so many years or even now for boomers.

Over the last two or three years, our expenses have risen by hundreds of dollars a month for all utilities, property taxes, insurance, gasoline, health insurance and food.

When you take into consideration all the other expenses for things like maintenance and large repairs or appliance replacement, clothing, gifts, and etc., this takes a big bite out of net worth and keeping it in the positive range a bit tricky.

For instance, I purchased a couple window fans and we have 3 ceiling fans so we don't always need to turn on the main air conditioning unit. I've been shopping for blackout and insulating curtains and drapes to control summer and winter temperatures. Our windows already have room darkening blinds, especially useful for summer heat reduction.

I also shop all the different stores' specials and bogo offerings for food and other necessaries we need and look for coupons to match. I have charges at stores like Kohl's and wait for the biggest discounts on wanted items before we shop. When we eat out, I've got coupons. My mindset is that we really don't need anything in such a hurry as to pay full price for something that will eventually be on sale.

Short of selling everything and moving into a travel trailer to haul around for a permanent vacation how are you planning your retirement in addition to social security and pension fund? Personally, I plan to keep on working on my own and probably won't ever quit that.

Figuring out your net worth can be a bit difficult with the way all the prices of absolutely everything keep going higher and higher.

    .
I have 5 books selling well on Amazon, with two more coming out in a month or so.
The books are providing a solid monthly income, that I'm adding to.
After 10-12 books...and maybe one more a year after that, We'll be quite comfortable.

My wife knows our net worth. I never think about it.

I think I'm going to follow your lead. For my first book, because everyone loves forums, I think I'll call it The Forum Troll. You guys don't mind if I start practicing on you, do you? Gotta get some fodder, you know.

Nah, go ahead. But what genre is going to be? Sci-fi? Fantasy? LOL

Well, I guess when you consider all the stories, the fake-it-til-you-make-it crowd, the scammers, the hype in the WSO section and all the rest, it should probably be a work of fiction. I think the genre will be . . . fictional reality!

Seriously, you should write and publish your own books. I've read some of your stuff, and it shows a real talent.

Yes - the glass is still worth something. (If they're made of non-biodegradable plastic, then they're a liability, not an asset.)

Way to go Claude, passive income is a great thing to have. I'm working on writing a bunch in different genres myself and hope to do the same. At least one will be a continuing series if it works out well (i.e., put the marketing pedal to the metal.)

I can easily see myself working on writing until I can't do it any longer in later years. Not having some kind of work would be confusing to me even though I'm hoping for good passive earnings.

We are forced to recycle all our plastics, glass, metal and paper here. Same day pick up for garbage and recycle once a week runs about $300 a year. Supposedly, we get a "cheaper rate" because of all the recyclables. For things that aren't weekly recyclable, some places are free to drop off and other items have to go to an intermittent drop off where you have to pay a good bit to get rid of them.

Regarding the OP: I have a financial planner and a CPA who both get together quarterly to keep track of all my finances, taxes, property, etc. Though it does fluctuate daily due to my aggressive investing in the stock market (which I have a very optimistic long-term view on).

People ask me why I have a financial planner since I used to be one and my answer to that is simple: I prefer having a professional handling many aspects of my finances so I can worry and focus on other things. My planner not only makes me money, but he also saves me money even after I pay him (he is fee-based only and does not work on any commissions) because he keeps up with the latest investment and insurance products and I don't.

After learning a lot from my wealthy clients I've learned that the smart rich do 3 things well that most others don't:

    1. Have at least one residual income stream that compliments their main income stream.
    2. They invest their money.
    3. They protect their wealth using LLCs, Corporations, insurance, and trusts.

Knowing your net worth is important, but it's more important to know exactly what you'll need to save and invest in to reach your financial goals with the lifestyle that you want.

Nah, not into that kinda stuff, Rick, we aren't that well off. I would feel pretty sure a lot of people do, but until the IRS starts taxing the reductions in price from coupons, I think I'm in pretty good shape with that. In fact, I'll be heading out sometime this coming week with a pile of them.
