Both are great and I have many songs from both of them.

What about Tower Of Power? and IMHO the Horney Horns of Parliament-Funkadelic can match up against any group of horns.

Woh! Your're right Tower of Power and Parliament is big league too! But we put number of hits and longevity as one of our measuring sticks.

Very few bands (with horn sections) can measure up to Chicago and Earth, Wind and Fire when it comes to hits and longevity.

First time I saw the Tower of Power horn section was in 77 with Little Feat. Been a fan of both ever since.

Well, it's all subjective. Personally, Chicago turned into too much of a pop band for my taste. Don't get me wrong. I liked a lot of their music but they seemed to be more about making money than making cutting edge music as the years went by.

Earth, Wind and Fire, on the other hand, who, ironically, I don't like as much musically, I feel was more true to themselves throughout their history. Maybe it had something to do with the genre of music itself.

But as far as skill goes, in regard to the horn sections, it's a pick 'em. They're both great. I also like Tower of Power better than both bands but as you said, they simply don't compete on the hit barometer, which is sad.

Anyway, if I have to vote (if you put me up against a wall and made me choose just one) I guess I would have to choose Chicago only because I like their music better, even if some of it sounds a little cheesy to me.

The Tonight Shwo Band was a "big band", but I watched them play with everyone from Pavoratti <sp?> to ZZ Top.

Doc Severinsen looked like he was in high school in that first vid. He really aged well though. Just a little weight, a few wrinkles and some gray. I think his good humor and hanging out with Johnny C. helped.

Chicago died after their third album. Loved the first three though. EWF, hard to beat. But you gotta love this....

Chicago features their horns a whole lot more than EWF but the Crusaders have also been invited to the party.
