Freelancer Calls the Warrior Forum a "Cult" - Accurate?

One of the changes around here is the forum is now owned by a publicly listed company. That means more information is available since it will be of interest to shareholders and potential shareholders.

(As an aside, Freelancer's stock has been in a virtual free-fall since shortly before the public announcement of the forum acquisition.)

Today, Freelancer issued a company release about the new Warrior Payments service. A copy can be obtained from the Australian Securities Exchange:

Company information - ASX

Page 7, the Warrior Forum is referred to as:

Great brand and global cult following
Fair?

Language issue?

In the US I would consider the word "cult" to be a negative reference. Wikipedia defines the word 'cult' to involve 'deviant' beliefs and practices - and not in a good way.

Would you also consider the forum to be a cult?

I guess it depends on the person reading it. Some people may take it as it has a "cult" following, and others may literately take it as being a cult. They could have used a better choice of words IMO

"Cult" could mean "passionate followers" or something similar. I agree with you, however, that more often than not, the word tends to be negatively interpreted, i.e. used to describe those who tend to be wackos, extremists, and negatively deviant.

I personally doubt that the person that wrote the press release meant the term in a negative way. That would be a huge mistake since the whole purpose of a release is typically to shed positive light on the company.

  • I do believe that there are quite a large number of warriors who log in here daily, (religiously), and or newbie marketers who follow advice from other more experienced marketers, and who may at times make certain business decisions based on advice from warriors in this forum.

So even though there is not "one" general preacher that is worshipped here, marketing, making money, and at times, the love of money, sure seems to be a very strong theme here. Not sure if that qualifies as a cult, but I can see how this forum could be interpreted that way, and yes, it does have a cult following. But so does Facebook, Twitter, and other sites where millions gather.

There's a lot of gurus and marketing gods here in Warrior Forum. So I don't particularly see what's the fuzz of using this buzzword. Kindsvater's location is also in the Jedi Temple. Now, I have respect for "Jedi Religion" (I have many online friends from this affiliation) but if you would depict them in a negative way like a cult, that is not the way of the Force. The same goes for any group of people who share the same fervor in their interests. Respect begets respect.

The word has many possible meanings. But cult following isn't necessarily a bad thing. I think in that context it simply means zealous.

Yep, it is being taken out of context.

      Also from the Wiki:

"A cult following is a group of fans who are highly dedicated to a specific area of culture. A film, book, musical artist, television series, or video game, among other things, will be said to have a cult following when it has a small but very passionate fan base."

Hmmmm ... now, let me see, that's a real poser: Freelancer spent over $3 Million on buying the Warrior Forum and then somebody from their company referred to it as having a "global cult following".

Did they mean the word "cult" negatively, or positively????

Puzzling, baffling, perplexing ... no: I can't decide it at all.

"Cult" has negative connotations. But if you said we had a "cult-like" following in that people of similar minds shared experiences, that would be true.

If that little guy is some sort of subversive....there's an intimidation factor lacking. He looks too friendly to be a cult leader...

I think "cult following" is a poor choice of words (loyal or dedicated might have been better) but if you own it - you get to describe it.

Your title states that freelancer called the Warrior Forum a Cult, but, the actual statement was that it has a cult following.

Your attention grabbing headline is a lie and the statement is true, it does have a cult following. So what is the big deal

First. Funny, and thanks for the compliment...and the joke.

But a "cult like following" isn't the same as calling it a cult. Not the same at all. Not even close.

It would be like a title saying "Members of the forum are a passionate group"

And then saying "How dare they say that we are having group sex?"

        To me, it's a non-issue.

And...the Forum isn't a cult. It has none of the attributes of a cult. It does, however have the attributes of a forum. Controversial? Only to a three year old.

No joke, you think my coming here was an accident, no. My Ouija board told me to come. It spelt out "Look underneath the toilet seat and thou shalt find infinite wisdom" and was signed Arch Angel Michael.

I knew it was important but it took me a while to figure it out, I was lost. And then, quite by accident, I was surfing my favourite Cult fetish site when I clicked on a link and bam, here I was, slap bang in the middle of a ghost thread you started. Divine providence I call it!

I've never understood the phrase "cult following" to have a specifically negative connotation. It can if there's additional context to slant it that way, but by itself it just means an enthusiastic group of devotees. Like the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Greetings Paul, I played Eddie and Dr. Scott in the stage version of RHPS. Not many know that in the play, both roles are played by the same person, generally. One of the high points of my stage career. lol Those were the good old days.

Also, while I have not seen the film 100 times, I probably saw it at 50 or so midnight showings when I lived on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in the 80's. One of the greatest movies of all times.

While I didn't see it 100 times, nor did I do any stage versions, I DID see it probably 40 times at midnight showings and get up for the Time Warp in the aisles...

I was about 14 or 15 when I started going to the midnight showings. A LOT of weekends for quite some time

Cult following, possibly, but l just see them as being a comedy sketch with no foreseeable end!

But, is my Mars Curiosity Stealth Thread, a cult? Hard to tell?

It has 40k, of visitors, although most are constantly coming back. But l think that it boils down to intense curiosity, on what is really on Mars, and what lies around the corner?

I have an intense desire to see what lies around the corner, on Mars, and share that with others, who want to know.

And of course finding the occasional martian fluffy bunny helps!

The title of the thread is misleading.

At no point did FLN call the WF a cult.

FLN described the WF as having a "cult following". In the context of what was actually said, it meant "fiercely loyal", with no ideological subtext whatsoever.

If you feel threatened or offended by being described as part of a "cult following", in the context that FLN used the phrase, then perhaps you might like to examine why.

If however you deliberately misquoted what was said, purely to stir up a bit of controversy for the purpose of "clickbait", then bravo - mission accomplished.

      Frank,

The closest I got to that was dating a woman who I had the good fortune to be able to tell, "I knew you looked familiar. I've seen you running around in public in almost nothing."

She'd played Janet 7 or 8 years earlier at the Granada in Buffalo. In proper wardrobe.

That made for an ... interesting ... conversation.

Hmmm, Frank you did remove your prison number, and the scar a particular viscous fluffy bunny gave you on your forehead when you were a baby, then went on to kill your parents.

After that you started your viscous fluffy bunny cult, and have been feared by fluffy bunny breeders ever since.
It good to be feared. I take 'crazy' to a whole new level and always use it to my advantage.
Although magicians love you, no need for them to pull a rabbit out of the hat, just cattle prod him, and he will eat the hat!

Are you kidding? Put a Van Dyke on him, and he'll look just like you...minus the gayness.

Actually..in fairness...he looks more like me than you. That that's not as funny.

For the last time, I sport a goatee. Your [insert a female family member you'd consider an insult here] sports a Van Dyke.

I wish to report a theft, the theft of pretty much what I would have posted in response to Dan's post. Just because I was at work and did not have my login is no excuse. :-)

I was trying to be nice. I just don't subscribe to the universally accepted rumor that men with goatees are always gay. And the debate of "Are men with goatees born that way, or do they choose a goatee lifestyle?".....doesn't affect the respect I feel for your bravery...in admitting that you have a goatee.

I repeat...there is no basis in fact to the rumor that all men with a goatee are gay.

And I think the word "Van Dyke" makes you sound taller. Just trying to help.

lol. Thanks. Musical comedy was my forte, though I'm not much of a tap dancer.

I still remember my first published review in the Boca Raton News for my portrayal of Pseudolus in 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.' Skip Sheffield wrote, "When I interviewed Mr. Falcone he stated that he had never actually sang, before. I can tell you after seeing his opening night performance that he still hasn't." He went on to say, "Though not blessed with a beautiful voice, his was perfect for the role and in the truest sense of the term, he certainly sold every song that he sang. I see a bright future for Mr. Falcone and believe that he will be gracing the stages of many South Florida venues."

                              He was correct. lol

                              My Roles:

Wally Womper in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying."
Sancho Panza in "Man of La Mancha."
Amos Babcock Bellamy in "The Fantasticks."
                              Mr. Bumble in "Oliver."
                              Moonface Martin in "Anything Goes."
One of the Gangsters in "Kiss Me, Kate."
Fiorello H. La Guardia in "Fiorello."
Puntius Pilate in "Jesus Christ, Superstar."
Eddie and Dr. Scott in "The Rocky Horror Show."

Steve Hubbell in "A Streetcar Named Desire."
                              Joe in "The Shadowbox."
Cheswick in "One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest."
Sidney in "Catch Me If You Can." (Not the musical and not the new one.)

There were others, too. It's funny, I walked away from that part of my life after making enough money doing commercials in NYC to buy a hotel/bar/restaurant in the Poconos and never looked back. I always say that I have absolutely no regrets in life, but I have admitted to my VA shrink more than once, that one of the few things I look back on with profound sadness is not sticking with that career path. Of course I was smart enough to realize that had I become successful and made gobs of money, I probably would have died from a cocaine overdose. Walking away was an act of self-preservation for someone with an extremely addictive personality.

Besides - I truly loathed being in a profession where people much less talented than myself held sway over my success or lack thereof. That rubbed me the wrong way from day one. Casting directors are oftentimes actors that simply couldn't cut it. Get one drunk and they'll confess that they hate actors. lol

                              Cheers. - Frank

P.S. I also got sick of hearing that as long as John Belushi was alive, I was never going to work. That was NOT confidence building as it related to building a career.

Now that's a shame. Their must be an answer. A transplant from the very back of the goatee could work.

Claude grows a lot of hair on his skull, unfortunately it's not growing long enough to peek above the skin covering it.

Well, all I can tell you is that as an actor in the competitive NYC arena, your pictures get seen long before you do. You've got to get them instantly interested in meeting you or you can just pack your bags and head back to Podunk.

I taught classes in NYC on how to market and promote yourself to beat the competition. While I made a ton doing national ads, I made even more teaching those classes. lol

The only way you could teach those classes was if you were actually working - and I worked - a lot!

                    "Before and After"

My Answer Man of Life character from my old radio show.

Additionally, I was Meg Ryan's first publicity manager when she was on 'As the World Turns,' (she was a kid) I career-counseled Robert Clohessy (Boardwalk Empire), Lawrence Bender (Producer of 'Inconvenient Truth') Steve Vinovich (character actor on numerous TV shows) a few Rockettes and lots of others.

It's amazing what a joyous, interesting life I've had. I am a very lucky man and I always remind myself of that. The best thing I can say about my life is that even if I could remove the worst day of my life from my personal history, I would not do it if it would change where I am today. That's because the best is yet to come and I can almost taste it. Not that I have any goals, Some things are just organic.

Sometimes I regret the days when I let my bouts of PTSD color the way that others may judge me because of the really rough things that I can say and the behavior that I exhibit on occasion. Naaaaaah. That's load of crap. I revel in my douchenozzleliness!

        Paul,

I carried a torch for Susan Sarandon for years because of that movie.

I don't know if anyone here is into R/C but the guy who played Frankenfurter in our production was Christopher Chianelli. He was one of the best friends that I ever had and we were in my first true stage production - 'One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest,' together. He played Martini and I played Cheswick. This guy was brilliant at everything he touched. Acting singing, writing music. He did the R/C Show on the old DIY Channel and he did one of the first Robot War shows ever produced, also on DIY. In RHPS, Time Curry had nothing on this guy except fuller lips. lol

After I started producing theatrical productions in Boca Raton, I had him cast as Brer' Rabbit in Joel Chandler Harris' 'Livin' de Life,' which was Uncle Remus franchise (but I'm sure you already knew that). He was so damn good that when we lost our Brer' Coon due to a boating accident - I took over the role, just to have a chance to perform with him, again.

Unfortunately, Christopher died around 5 years ago and my life has had a giant void in it, ever since. Some people are born with more gifts than any one person should ever be blessed with, leaving nothing for guys like me. lol Well, other than my genius.

I'd imagine there are probably lots of shows with him on YouTube, but I could not bring myself to watch them if there were. I'm way to emotional for that. If you are into R/C modeling - check them out. His enthusiasm for the hobby was beyond infectious. The world is a much less interesting place, since his passing.

        Cheers. - Frank

Well, you are kind to say that, but in reality we can't really tell anything about anyone through a computer screen. It's all an illusion, partially shaped by our own perceptions, whether accurate or not, and by the way others choose to act in any given moment in time, whether or not their action and/or comment is truly representative of what they actually are like. I'm always amazed when I hear that 'so and so doesn't like me.' Hey - - so and so - you don't freakin' know me. I happen to have a large number of 'bad hair days.' So shoot me!
            Very sorry for your loss.
Thanks. With each passing year the losses grow more profound and much more frequent. With all of the physical ailments and psychic trauma that I must face on a daily basis, every morning when my eyes shoot open at 5 AM without an alarm going off and I realize that I'm still alive, I am immediately faced with the first perplexing question of the day. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Then I devote myself for the next 18 hours to making sure that it was a good thing. lol

            Cheers. - Frank

I can only agree so far. One post may fool us, but not hundreds. And the truth is, you say many things I don't agree with. And you can be rough in your response.

But you know what? we can tell things about a person. There are things that are difficult or impossible to fake.

Are you intelligent? Yes, and you cannot fake that.
Are you funny? Yes. And a sense of humor is impossible to fake.
Are you argumentative? Yes. I suppose you could create that persona. But why would you?

And I can't call you a friend. Not really. I have never met you. but I can say for certain that you are interesting. Would we be friends after a few beers? Maybe. Maybe not. But I don't think I would be bored. And I think I would learn something.

You may have a bad hair day now and then. But it could be worse. You could be Riffle. He has bad face days.

Claude ever since I've been here I have always been myself and it's gotten me into a lot of trouble. I've never even thought about trying to be something other than who I am. I know I should at least try not to be so stubborn and opinionated and I should certainly listen to people when they try to help me, but old habits are hard to break. Ultimately, my whole life, I have always done whatever the hell I wanted and I've paid for it dearly. I've lost a lot of "friends" here who at one time cared enough to help me out who now, won't even speak to me anymore because I'm such a pig headed person.

And after 17,000 plus posts plus countless others in this forum that don't even get counted, there's probably nobody here who doesn't know me pretty well. I am what I am. I make no apologies for it. And I realize now that I'm too old to change. All I can do is just try to reign it in a little bit and try to be a better person. But I'll always be who I am. It is the reason I was successful at one time and is also the reason, ironically, that I am not successful now. But that will change again in time. Why? Because of who I am. I have never quit a day in my life. The harder things get, the more stubborn I get. I'll be damned if I'm going to let a few setbacks get to me.

Why am I going on about all this? Damned if I know. Maybe I just needed a break from the non stop working I've been doing today. I'm starting to see light at the end of the tunnel, finally.

Anyway, for those of you reading this who I have pissed off over the years because of my bad attitude, I'm sorry. Like Giabiz said over at the Copywriters forum, I can't help being who I am. He finally figured it out and it made me finally realize it. All I can do is try to do better.

I think that's all any of us can do when all is said and done.

That's very important to me. I find general agreement incredibly boring.
And you can be rough in your response.
I agree. Entering my kingdom is definitely not for the faint of heart.
But you know what? we can tell things about a person. There are things that are difficult or impossible to fake.
That just depends on how good an actor one is. Perhaps you need to peruse a few more of my theatrical reviews. I believe you'd be quite impressed and it may cause you to not fully believe all that you have surmised up to this point. Plus, I have sold off and on for decades. I have usually been the top producer in any position I have ever held, achieving that status in a very short period of time. Also, isn't being an actor 'selling yourself?'
Are you intelligent? Yes, and you cannot fake that.
Oh, my. Let's see. Went to reform school at 15 for cutting school for 106 straight days and setting a record in the city of Philadelphia. OK - I will admit that for every one of the 106 days I took the El to center city and spend more hours than I would have spent in class in the most majestic and inspiring building I have ever entered, the main library of Philadelphia where I would get lost reading books on dinosaurs, reptiles, amphibians, microscopic pond life, every type of fish known to exist in the world, scientific discovery, the solar system, exotic plants and animals - nothing about people, though. By the age of 9 I had already come to the firm conclusion that Earth would be a much better place if it was devoid of humanoids. I never read a word about anything that involved a creature that stood erect. I knew the planet was heading for disaster long before most and I was probably the only person in my peer group that knew the teachings of Rachel Carson.

Quit high school at 16 when I volunteered for combat duty in Vietnam. *******s made me wait until I was 17 before I could be sworn in. Intelligent? Started with grass, hash, PCP, LSD, peyote, methedrine and ended with cocaine. Then moved on to the psychotropics - Thorazine, Stelazine, Mellaril, Prozac, Tegretol, Klonopin and a few that I can't even remember, most of which list 'profound memory loss' as a major side effect. They're correct. I have very little memory remaining.

Add to that being pistol-whipped when I was robbed outside my restaurant and had my skull caved in and I just don't know if I possess anything that could even remotely be considered 'intelligence,' so I can't give you that one.
Are you funny? Yes. And a sense of humor is impossible to fake.
I'm an acquired taste, or so I have been told. That said, I managed to do an Internet radio show for almost 7 years and had most of the people that were listening on day one, still with me at the end. I'm very proud of that. They thought I was funny. Or at least interesting. My rants were infamous.
Are you argumentative? Yes. I suppose you could create that persona. But why would you?
Because I crave the stimulation. It gives me a heightened sense of engagement which I need to keep the few synapses that remain, firing. There is nothing worse on the planet than boredom. To me, being argumentative is a form of jousting. Even when I appear to be crushing someone, it's not serious on my end. Kinda like professional wrestling. It looks and sounds so much worse than it actually is. While I can be brutal, generally it's an act. C'mon. I'm 5' 2". You don't think I might have a complex that I never outgrew??? Actually, I did out grow it - in Vietnam. It was there that I learned the physicality of a person meant nothing and that you should only measure a person by what's in their heart. I have a good heart. The problem is it's on its third pacemaker/defibrillator. So no - don't take my arguing that seriously. I do love to pound right wing morons into submission, but I believe that should be our great national pastime. I'm still doing my bit for my country. Hee-hee!!!
                And I can't call you a friend.
I don't believe anyone I know on the Internet is my friend. Even people that I have had on-line relationships with for decades. To me that word is used too casually. That does not mean that we can't be friendly to one another, but I can count the people that I consider friends on two hands and have my thumbs left over. And most of those have known me since I was 8 years old.
Not really. I have never met you. but I can say for certain that you are interesting.
A nice word but it generally means one should be locked up in a rubber room. No argument, here.
Would we be friends after a few beers? Maybe. Maybe not.
Puhleeze. You'd be begging me for man-sex!
But I don't think I would be bored.
Drilled, maybe - but definitely not bored.
And I think I would learn something.
Yes - never wear pink taffeta when having brewskis with Big Frank.
You may have a bad hair day now and then. But it could be worse. You could be Riffle. He has bad face days.
Well, I have heard it said that Riffle has the kind of face that people like. Like to throw rocks at.

I find terming us as "cult" is extremely insulting and derogatory - especially in that business context.

Cult would have been used in that context for one purpose - to make us look like brain-dead zombies who will eat any shyte we are thrown.

We are owed a huge apology for their idiocy in choosing terminology. Maybe one of those 5 buck writers they hire on freelancer should have been hired for their compnay prospectus and marketing literature. Surely there's someone smart enough in that company to know this would get back to us? I predict a well deserved fall in internal sales.

Cult-like - - saying the same thing. I'm sorry - I'm offended. Extremely. We were called droolers for the purpose of convincing investors that we'll buy anything we're told to. It was NOT complimentary or respectful in any way shape or form. I studied language and mind for many years. I don't have to be told what the semantic nuances of this statement were or were not. We've been insulted. At least the main forum crowd was.

Cult really isn't a negative term. When you have people fawning overa particular person that most outside of the group wouldn't, it is effectively a CULT. So yeah it is fair, and it isn't necessarily bad.

I'm sure the word means the same in australia.

When people think of cults, they usually think of RELIGIOUS cults or WEIRDO CULTS, like the guy claiming spaceships were coming to take them away, or the old advertised whatevers(like movies, books, music) that have a "cult following". The *****ONE***** thing they ALL have in common is some person or group of people that those inside the group would fawn over that few others may ever even KNOW about, much less care about.

The definition is CLEARLY wrong, and heavily biased, but you can KIND of see what I am talking about in the #3 definition here:

    https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=cult

A cult CLEARLY is NOT religious, because then the term "cult classic" or things like that spaceship guy, or the manson cult, would seem off the wall. ALSO, there are plenty of weird religious teachings that are not considered cults because they don't have the fawning. It is simply that a religious leader is likely to have some of the cult type attributes and when it breaks off from other things, it may become a cult.
