How to Know You Have No Life

I have never done the macarena, taken a selfie, sent a text message or watched American Idol (or any show in the genre). There are other 'nons' for me - but those top my list.

So with that said I must formally confess that I am currently in the middle of watching 'Sharknado' and as soon as it ends I will be plunging headlong into 'Sharknado 2."

"Bless me father for I have sinned. Last Sunday I completely disregarded the intelligence that you bestowed upon me."

One good thing about American Idol is that they can't fake it with auto-tune which is brazenly used by popular but alarmingly off-pitch pop-stars who can't sing in tune. I've started auto-tuning some things. It is pretty hilarious.

We don't even have a TV. I had to search for Sharknado. Sounds kind of fun.

(Don't get me wrong. I'm not pretending to have a life.)

I still have a life also, but feel it slipping away when l try to watch sitcoms and other meaningless, repetitive dribble on TV!

Television. Oh, how I have mixed feelings on that one. At a very personal level I believe that TV and smoking marijuana are the prime two examples of things I can legitimately deem the best and worst things that have affected my life.

(Hmmm. Should that have been written as, 'two prime examples?')

When I watch 'Sponge Bob Square Pants' I feel one way about it, but then I'll watch 6 hours of 'Cosmos,' back-to-back and feel stimulated to the point of intense curiosity about the world around me and my place in the universe.

Smoking marijuana was a way of dousing the intense rage that I deal with on a daily basis, but smoking it from the time I awakened and as my last act before going to bed, only made me stupid and lazy. Now that I am 'pot-free' for10 months and have worked harder during that time than anytime in the past 20 years, I am left wondering if smoking is a good thing or an impediment to reaching one's goals?

(Please DO NOT use the word 'moderation' in any response).

I have spent my life in a 'black and white, 'all or nothing' state. I have this conversation with my VA shrink on a continual basis. She panics when I tell her I have quit smoking pot as she is fully cognizant of it's calming effect on me. She is incredulous that I am handling my life so well without it. I have tried to explain to her that I am simply approaching this situation as the most intense challenge of my life and my success at overcoming all of the challenges I have already undertaken in an effort to improve the physical and psychological aspects of my existence have prepared me for the ultimate challenge - and I am winning. There is no doubt that if I choose I am capable of going the rest of my life without smoking pot. I just don't know if I have reached a final decision about that, yet.

The only thing that I can relate it to is when I quit eating potato chips. Laugh if you like but they were the strongest and most damaging addiction in my life. I ate a bag every single day. Not what used to be a 10¢ bag that morphed over the years into a 99¢ bag. No - I'm talking a giant $2.99 to $3.49 bag of chips, every single day of my life.

I made a New Year's resolution in 2012 that I would go a full year without eating a single chip. As the end of the year approached I was filled with anticipation of going out on January 1st of 2013 and celebrating with a giant bag of Wise chips slathered in French's yellow mustard and washed down with a few bottles of Peroni (a great Italian beer). The day came and went and I didn't do a damn thing. It's now just past 2.5 years later and I still have not had a single chip. Am I still addicted? Well, I engineer and co-host a radio show for a friend in Philly on Saturday mornings. He came down with his wife for the show and I promised them cheesesteaks afterwards. I bought some kettle-cooked chips for them at the Amish market. They go great together and I don't allow others to go without because I'm weak. After they had lunch I placed the remaining bag of chips in front of them and told them that it was imperative that they take the bag with them upon leaving. They laughed but agreed. After they left, what did I discover? They left the bag of chips. Was I worried? Let's see. I immediately crushed the bag underfoot and placed a few scoops of used cat litter in the bag, lest I inhale the crumbs. Yes - I have a problem. Let's be honest. I could have eaten those chips and no one would have known but me and my evil twin 'Hank' who shares my psyche. I was tempted for around 10 seconds, but ultimately did the right thing. I have finally learned that doing the right thing strengthens my resolve for future challenges while doing the wrong thing leads to wallowing in disappointment and an abject sense of failure. Those days are over - temptation has been vanquished, forever.

Hmm. I have no idea what THIS was all about on a Monday morning. Perhaps I need a blog??? lol

So - TV and the 'evil weed.' Still trying to figure it out. Pot, I have proven I can live without and I'm sure I could live without TV and just might give that a try for a week or so and see if I can survive that. We'll see. I'm really going to think about that.

      Cheers. - Frank

So - after writing the post I went back to watching the movie. Made the mistake of putting the lounger just a bit too far back and was asleep within 10 minutes. Missed the last hour of Sharknado and all of Sharknado 2. That's what happens when I have two beers with dinner - my legal limit.

It's now 1 AM and I doubt that I'll get another minute of sleep tonight as I got in my requisite 5 hours.

I'm going to view this occurrence as a good thing. It's possible that watching both movies, back-to-back, just might have been more than anyone's brain could survive.

lol ... now that's funny. I watched the Breaking Bad episodes on a marathon TV event and they were on like 5-6 hrs per day. I fell asleep on the last show and never saw the ending.

Had to buy all the DVDs and watch it all again, taking it at a more leisurely pace.

I watched 2 a night a few nights a week after everyone was in bed (on Netflix) until I finished. Freaky show.

That's not really my modus operandi. I'd actually feel guilty about doing something like that. It's like those graphics or video clip sites that invite you to join for free for 7 days to get unlimited downloads (which they actually limit to 20 a day). I just can't do it. If I cancelled after downloading 100+ clips or images, I would not sleep well for a long time. I would obsess over it.

Besides, if I signed-up, I would just wind up watching more TV. I really want to see 'House of Cards.'

I normally don't operate that way either (well, anymore). I joined Netflix because my wife and I tend to watch older series over what's on today. We also use Amazon Prime for the same reason.

I can say this - House of Cards is awesome. Only 2 seasons (13 episodes each) so far. Now I find myself checking for when season 3 will air

I agree with your assessment of the Honeymooners. Funniest show I have ever watched.

I will never be finished with them. lol. The most addicting series on TV I have ever seen. Watched all of the Sopranos also and Breaking Bad was more addicting, but those two are the only series I have really gotten into in years.

I'm one of those people that believe that life is way too short to watch anything more than once. The only thing I watch repeatedly is, 'The Honeymooners.' In my mind the funniest TV show ever produced. The dash of pathos made it perfect.

Probably making an effort not to be like the masses. I haven't tweeted in a couple of years now (never really got into it) and I do use Facebook - but I look at it more as a guilty pleasure than any kind of necessity. Sort of like the WF. Sometimes I am here every day, then I won't visit for a week, maybe two.

You're probably better off not messing with all these distractions these days.

I will confess to joining Facebook under a fake name simply to join the groups of many of the software applications I have purchased.

While I can see the benefits of using FB for business, at a personal level it has absolutely no allure for me.

Yes, tv is the yardstick and time the punisher!

Or to put it another way, no life would consist of drinking beer all day and watch sport on tv all day, then bitch about not getting anywhere!

Then do this for, let's say, 5 years then get depressed and bitch about it!

In the meantime somewhere who knows that inaction is death or a waste of your resources, namely time, will get into action.

He, might fail for 4 years straight, and even have the beer drinking, sports fan, tell him he is nuts?

But after 5 years person A, apart from being a gifted beer drinker, and a whiz with sports results, (can't do to much with that) hasn't progressed much financially.

Person B, who has failed but learned and also developed his talents, increases his competency levels so much he starts to become successful.

To me, no life is getting nowhere and staying inactive. Or having that regret of not going for it on your deathbed!

Yes, free tv, has to be the biggest waste of human potential this planet has ever seen.

I would not watch tv at all, but for one or maybe two shows. Sitcoms. murder mysterys and endless law and order shows, make me want to end it all. They might be excellent, but p*** your life away on excellent shows, isn't good!

      Morning Laurence.
Who has the right to decide if others do or don't have a life.
      Only you, sir.
My life today is vastly different to what it was 10 or 20 years ago but is it better, worse or about the same? Who is to judge?
Again - no one but yourself.
I am the sum of my experiences and desires, dreams and goals.
I'm sure you'd agree that the statement applies to each of us.

      Now - if I may:

      1. It's always best to double check to see the OP of any thread. When you see that it's me you can rest assured that there will be little if any content that is worthy of your intelligent input and observation. That's shorthand for saying, "Move along - there's nothing to see here."

      2. Those that have posted are generally well aware of the fact that I have the IQ of a mollusk and rarely, if ever, post anything that should be deemed worthy of any intelligent or heartfelt response. Their posting in my thread should be viewed as nothing more than throwing peanuts to a caged chimp and/or a gesture meant to placate me in case I am in the midst of a PTSD induced rage-fest. Nothing more.

Of course you are always welcome to post in my threads, but that will only leave me more confounded as I struggle to understand the complexity of the human race and the inexplicable actions of intelligent individuals.

Have a great day. - Frank

I have a wonderful life. My days are so full that they fly by. I don't know where the time goes. I'd list all my activities but then I'd be here all day doing it and I do have a life so, sorry. I'll pass.

    Carry on.
